First, this review is very LONG overdue since my daughter graduated 5th grade in Aug 2025. However,…read moreit's given me time to gather my thoughts about what to say about this gem and put into the right words what an amazing school Century is. We enrolled my daughter in Preschool at three years old and likely would have stayed beyond our time there, if they had let us. So, here are just a few things I loved about our experience at Century School: The Staff: The Century staff are the finest humans to ever human. They are highly experienced, care deeply about their kids, and go above and beyond and meet the kids where they are in their learning and help guide them, so they feel successful and confident when picking up new skills. The Hours: If you are a working parent, you get it. School pick up is hard. They have your back w/7:30am drop off and 5:30 pick up. They teach critical thinking and self-reliance: The kids have chores; they have responsibility, they have a plan each day and the result is that they own equity in their learning experiences. Another plus is that the older kids also learn to tutor and guide the younger kids because the classes are mixed ages. You are a part of a Family/community: When you are a parent or student of Century you are a part of a family. Truly, I know it sounds cheesy but it's true. Some of my most lifelong solid parent friends are a result of our kids attending century together. There is a bond and a community that is fostering there which isn't comparable to any other schools. I would choose Century over and over again, to help shape my kiddo's foundational learning. My Kiddo is in 6th grade now and is still ahead in many core subjects because of the work they do with their students and I never ever felt like I didn't know exactly what was going on with her education.

Century School is the BEST THING WE EVER DID FOR OUR KIDS. I feel bad for the person who gave…read moreCentury a 1 star review - I REALLY do- but her experience is not one that I, nor any parents or kids I know have experienced. Frankly, I find the claims of "academic malpractice" not only insulting to those of us that LOVE this school but bordering on libelous. The reviewer speaks to a number of issues I can readily contradict. I feel strange about posting a school review on Yelp of all places, but feel compelled to do so. First, there is mention of testing and progress. Each child at Century takes a standardized assessment every 6 months and parents are provided with written results showing academic progress in relation to previous years. Additionally, parents can opt into the Lawrence Virtual School K12 curriculum that includes additional state tests to measure your child's performance. On top of that, every child's academic progress is MEASURED DAILY. All you have to do is ask and any teacher will walk you through exactly what they've learned THAT DAY. Our children regularly bring home completed workbooks. We receive emails and texts, not just about performance but what each teacher appreciates about our children (and what they don't) as well as who their friends are, pictures, etc. On many occasions, we have had lengthy "parent-teacher conferences" when dropping off/picking up our children. The teachers have always been gracious with their time. Second, the reviewer mentions transitioning to public school. We have friends whose children attend other private schools and ALL of our children have had to figure out how to transition to public school. There are a number of differences between Century and public school that our son encountered in his transition - moving to larger class sizes, less peer tutoring, and group instruction. There are more kids, more distractions, changing classes, and more peer pressure. Fortunately, Century prepares parents and kids for this transition. The principal partnered with and introduced the kids to their public-school counselors, taking them on a group tour of their new school, sharing tips for success, and addressing any challenges he anticipated prior to the transition. For example, they knew our son would need to show more of his math work in middle school. Our son struggled for 3-4 weeks with the transition. And, so did we with everything that was new. But now he's settled in and at our most recent teacher conference we were told how he stands out as a leader and is making A's in most of his classes. Century prepared him extremely well and deserves credit for it. Third, on the subject of follow ups to find out if Century's "methods are successful." My first thought is - This isn't a research experiment. It's a school. My elementary school teachers never followed up with my progress. Did yours? However, Century school teachers HAVE FOLLOWED UP. The principal asked all 5th grade graduates to come back 2 weeks into their 6th grade year so he could give them a graduation gift and to find out how things were going. The teachers let kids know they always have a place at Century. Many former Century students volunteer during afternoons, days off, or summer vacations to mentor and work with current students. And some Century students come back as teachers while in college. Fourth, the reviewer states that Century just wants to cash you checks without interest in your children. The reviewer makes it seem like they are all about money. This is offensive. Century is NOT-FOR-PROFIT. The teachers and principal love what they do, work long hours, and run on a lean budget. Frankly, it's sad what we pay teachers at ANY school, public or private, who spend 8+ hours a day with our kids teaching them things we don't have time to teach them. Century is very inexpensive considering it's year round, runs from 7:30-5:30 daily, and provides breakfast, lunch, snacks, downtown treat trips, and field trips. More than that, I've never experienced a more caring environment for our children. I know how much the teachers care because of the texts they send when my child isn't feeling well, the fun pictures they send when they are on a field trip we can't attend, and the fact that our children ask us to invite their teachers to every single birthday party or social event we host. Our children LOVE their teachers and principal as much as they love their friends. And the teachers love them too. Century has taught our kids to be good human beings - emphasizing kindness, responsibility, compassion, hard work, courtesy, and honesty. They have learned to be intellectually curious and love learning for the sake of learning. The previous reviewer's experience is so different from my own and from everyone I know at Century that I felt it was important to counter it with our experience over the past 7 years. With certainty, I can say - Century is the best decision we've made for our kids.

This certainly is no longer the case. Last year there were teachers who were definitely not nice to the kids, but the administration kept them somewhat in line. We moved to Little Rock, Arkansas for two years when the oldest was in lower elementary. No Montessori school in that city came close in comparison to Raintree Montessori. We are more than satisfied with the education our children received in this caring, inclusive, nurturing, and positive learning environment. Both have graduated from college with honors. Our investment in their early education paid off with both students receiving academic scholarships. There can always be issues no matter the school. We simply work together to solve them, keeping the child's best interest in mind. We liked Raintree so much that I chose to work here. Now I help other families discover this amazing place to educate children.

We had our two children at Raintree 6 and 8 years, respectively, and while we very excited in the…read morebeginning, I strongly recommend against families using this school now. Raintree seemed wonderful in the beginning, clean facilities, great staff, wonderful food that you could even order to bring home. Our children appeared to be receiving an excellent education, and despite no standardized testing, we were told they were doing wonderfully and we believed it -- eagerly paying tuition to give our girls the best we could, like many other patents. Then, in 2022, the teacher's aid for our youngest daughter's class was accused, and now convicted, of molesting several children in her preschool class. This is a horrible event that can occur anywhere, but it was the school's response that was the damning part. Raintree did not respond as they should have. Imagine if the principal at your child's school found out that an employee was molesting a 3 year old, and when the employee began confessing... the principal advised the molester to stop talking to the police -- because, the owner of Raintree did exactly that. Further, the owners essentially ignored the parents of the victims, and they didn't want to talk with any parents about these events. They did eventually implement changes to policies that should have never existed -- no longer were very young children left alone in dark, curtained rooms for nap time, with a single teacher/aid, and fortunately no longer were aids/assistants allowed to work under the direct supervision of a family member. We asked for further changes, such as cameras and for our children to not be undressed publicly for swimming, and as parents we started a PTO to suggest further improvements for our children's safety, but the administration resisted all of our efforts at changes. The original core group of parents who founded the PTO left active involvement out of frustration, or left Raintree entirely, and the organization quickly became little more than a coordinating unit for volunteer opportunities. (citations to articles confirming details above: https://www2.ljworld.com/.../special-prosecutor.../, https://www2.ljworld.com/.../mothers-testify-about.../, https://www2.ljworld.com/.../recent-filings-shed-more.../) The second reason I would not recommend Raintree to anyone is the academic quality. Several years ago, two of our close friends removed their children (one in 1st, the other in 3rd grade) from Raintree, moving them to the public schools. The public entry testing indicated both children (from different families in different classrooms) were very behind for their grade levels, scoring in the 20 to 30 percentiles in reading and math. At first we still thought our own children were fine, but then we noticed our kids didn't know the math we would have known at that age, they couldn't read a clock, and they were very poor readers when we checked out library books appropriate for their ages. When we had our girls tested, one tested under the 40 percentile in reading, 30s in math, and the other was in the 30 and 20 percentiles, respectively. This was finally what pushed us over the edge, and we left two years ago. Leaving Raintree has been one of the best decisions we have made for our children. We feel our children are far safer in the public schools, the administration at the public schools are far more communicative with us as parents, and the education is much better. After nearly 2 years of hard work by their teachers, and countless hours of at-home tutoring, they are both in 80+ percentiles in every subject. Finally, we don't feel cheated anymore by Raintree. I resent Raintree for making me think we were doing the best thing for our children, and I regret ignoring the many warning signs and "drinking the Koolaide" that this was a good environment for our children. Our children are certainly far happier than they ever were at Raintree -- even they understand that the education in the USD479 schools are superior, and they greatly enjoy the far broader range of afterschool and inschool activities. I am far more impressed with the steps the public schools take to keep our children safe. The staff and administration are fantastic. The one time one of my children was bullied on a Friday, the principal called us Saturday morning, talked over an hour, talked with the families of the "bullying" kids over the weekend, and by Monday everything had been resolved. I advise any family to carefully consider their decision to send a child to Raintree. I strongly suggest you take advantage of the wonderful schools we have available for free (or really supported by our rather high property taxes) and say that $12-15k/year tuition for their future college or trade school education.
