I work at KU but on the West Campus so I rarely venture to the Union. Recently, I was required to…read morego there for a graduation ceremony. I was dreading this like a toothache. I pictured terrible parking, difficult to find room and too many people crammed in a poorly ventilated mini-auditorium. To my surprise, the Union was quite a pleasure. Parking was not the nightmare I envisioned and I was able to get a space within walking distance of the Union. I was able to easily locate the Woodruff Auditorium. Staff did a great job of posting directions at easy-to-find locations. I was able to find the auditorium and easily get a seat. The Woodruff Auditorium was big and spacious. I had no problem finding a seat and getting situated for graduation. This is a large auditorium but they did not squish people into spaces. There was plenty of room and it was the perfect climate. The acoustics were great, too, and I could hear perfectly from the back of the room. I was very impressed with this venue. I did not really have a chance to shop or venture into any of the other parts of the Union. From my quick glance, though, I could see this place was stocked with all the amenities people would need. There was a small convenience store, a large bookstore, a bank and other stores tucked away inside this building. Very nice place and the perfect venue for graduation.

Obviously, I had no idea what I was in for. My dad knew his way around and mysteriously managed to walk us past his "Outstanding Graduate of 1976" plaque. "No pressure" he told me. Yeah right. - Bookstore: "Wait, I need books?" Yes, books are good. The Bookstore has great deals on student essentials ranging from books and papers to Apple products (score!). Remember to load Beak'em Bucks on your student ID during enrollment -- especially if it's on your parents' dime ;) -- and you can use your KU card here instead of cash for some items (not sure if that really works for books, but I doubt it). - Walking to Memorial Stadium for football games: To get to the football stadium, there is a great shortcut through the Union. You enter on the 4th floor and go down to the bottom and presto -- the field is right in front of you! Go 'hawks! - JayBowl: I reviewed JayBowl separately, so I'll be brief. Bowling. *Extremely* student-friendly pricing. Bowling. That simple. - Classes: Yep, I even had a few classes in the Union. The lecture hall on the 4th floor is very nice! - Student Involvement and Leadership Center: If you're interested in getting involved on campus, you should DEFINITELY swing by the SILC office. Tons of awesome organizations to get involved in. Student Senate, Natural Ties, Alternative Breaks, KU LEAD, Greek Life and dozens of other organizations. Definitely something for everyone and lots of interesting people to meet. - Inter-Fraternity Council: Interfratters unite at the IFC office. Not sure how much work gets done, but I'm pretty sure those guys have a good time! - Blueprints Leadership Conference: For aspiring leaders and folks that are just interested in leadership (shout-out to the Leadership Minor), the Blueprints leadership conference is awesome. Check it out. - Rock Chalk Revue practice: I even had a few RCR practices in the Union. For the un-initiated, RCR is an annual variety show and philanthropy founded in the '50s. My wife and I met when we were partners in Rock Chalk so those days hold a special place in my heart, plus we won Rock Chalk pretty handily that year!. I'm sure I'm missing plenty of other great gems about our beloved Union. I hope you have as good of a time as I did! Rock Chalk!

Our son first went to the Lawrence Montessori School (LMS) as an eleven month old. Although our…read morefamily is no longer residing in Lawrence, LMS is one of many things that we miss the most. All of the teachers and staff members of LMS had been always so pleasant and upbeat. They created a really positive, enriched learning environment for the kids. They took such wonderful care of our son and truly had a passion for what they do. The curriculum was very carefully considered and varied week-to-week. I also have to give a shout-out to Ms. Amanda and Ms. Sophie in the Hummingbird room. They helped me through some of his more difficult times with toilet training and drop-off anxiety, as well as the 'terrible two' stages. Our son had been learning by leaps and bounds thanks to his awesome teachers! Furthermore, the managerial staff of LMS, Ms. Purviz and Ms. Sonja, helped ease my mind and were always there to give advice when I needed it. I always felt very comfortable talking to them about anything that comes to mind, and they are attentive to our feedback as well. I highly recommend LMS!

This small museum is housed in a log plank building on the north edge of the Haskell campus. ( easy…read moreto find). Though some may see it as unimpressive at first glance the displays provide a wealth of information and insight into the history of the school which began as a forced assimilation school for native children. For those who know little about the history of native people, this museum is a great starting point. Museum hours vary, as it is often student run, so be sure to call ahead. Admission is free. Non-native visitors are, of course, welcome. A trip to the Lawrence area is not complete without a visit to this museum and the Haskell campus.

Can I give a zero? After an abnormal screening breast ultrasound, I immediately called KU for a…read morediagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. I wanted to go 'the best in town'. I gave them the name of the facility that did the original ultrasound as requested. The soonest they could get me in was 3.5 weeks later. They like to see you 7-10 days after so I was very anxious to get it checked out. After waiting 3.5 weeks, I get checked in and wait 30 minutes and get all the way back to get undressed and was told they could not do the scans bc they didn't have all of my years of mammograms from diagnostic imaging. They literally turned me away. They have to do these scans anyway but refused until they got my history which was a ball drop on their part. The human thing to do would have been to scan me and then wait for the images they didn't request. Now I have to wait until they get my prior images and call me to reschedule. Unbelievable. Completely unacceptable.

The different departments put on a science carnival every year and this year I made sure to attend. WOW!!! What an amazing building! This is a fabulous building with all the latest and greatest. The lecture halls are comfy and spacious. There are huge screens for students to view materials. The lecture rooms are big but they didn't feel vacuous. Every discipline was outfitted in the latest and greatest. The physics lab, for instance, had all the right equipment and materials to provide an amazing show for the visitors. There were so many rooms and tons of space. Even the student areas were very accommodating. Places that in other buildings would have been off limits were used for lounging and study areas. There is no way to leave this building without being incredibly impressed. What a fabulous addition to KU!!

Not only was the…read moreatmosphere and overall look of the gallery beautiful but also, the venue manager was a hard-working, level-headed individual. The surrounding art work adds to the beauty of this venue near one of the most popular streets in Lawrence, Mass St. Despite some post wedding drama, the manger was quick to act and competent in working to make the reception as memorable as possible. I would highly recommend this venue for business meetings, receptions, or just a casual day viewing some impressive art.

Have never been to a pottery studio before so have nothing to compare it to but the classes have…read morebeen easygoing. The instructors are kind and the big doggo is always a joy to see. Probably expect having to do more than one class to completely finish a piece yourself, I usually do a class to start something new and then go to an open studio another day to trim it and get it ready to be fired the first time, and then I'll do another class once it's fired and glaze it, then start something new while I'm there. It's a process but I find it very enjoyable :)
