One of my favorite dance studios. Corey really strikes a great balance of aerobic workout with enough challenging choreography. The crowd is mostly female in their 30s and 40s and very friendly. read more

I've been to Corey's class several times and I'm addicted to it. I LOVE HIM! He's fun, energetic, and he's a damn good dancer. He doesn't hover over you and intimidate. I'm not great but he's able to break down the moves so I can pick it up quickly and get my sweat on. He has a solid group of followers and they are all encouraging, motivating and nice. I love coming here because there's no judgement-just good vibes, good music and I feel I get a killer workout. It's the best way to start my Saturdays. Thanks, guys! Love you! read more

New Style Motherlode kids performed at the SF 9th Annual Hip Hop Dancefest last Saturday, and they BLEW ME AWAY. The choreography redefined the word "original." There were even little 5 year olds who could crump like nobody's business. I couldn't stop screaming, "OMGOMG! They are SOOO cute! They are sooo good!" [As you can tell, I am extremely eloquent in the throes of adoration.] Best of all, the dancers had huge smiles on their faces and you could tell that they genuinely loved it. I read on the New Style Motherlode site that all kids who participate in their classes have to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Awesome. I would totally take hip hop classes at New Style Motherlode if I lived in the East Bay! For now, I can only give them props for one of the most badass hip hop performances I've ever seen... (PS I asked about prices and you can pay $100 a month and drop in on as many as you like (5 classes per day, every day of the month), or pay $15 per class if you're an adult - not sure what the kids rate is) read more

Cardio hip hop is pure, undeniable fun; whether you've never taken a dance class before or confess to hours of imitating music videos back in the day, you'll love the classes at New Style Motherlode. You will SWEAT. You will ENJOY yourself. You will both dread and thrill as Corey or Jennifer speeds up the music to get your heart rate up (except for JJ Fad's "Supersonic"...that's already fast...). Bring water, a towel, and an extra shirt. Don't be afraid--the teachers are great and put you at ease. DO be prepared to shake what your mama gave ya. Also of note: you have to have love for a dance studio that offers "funky ballet." How fabulous is that? Haven't tried it YET, but I'm totally planning on it! read more

On Super Bowl Sunday, decided to try something different from my normal activities (yoga, pilates). I recalled my one "beginner" (adv dancers showed up) hip hop class years ago at Alice Arts Center and thought NSM would be less intense - meaning at Alice Arts- the teacher (though good) made us demo the routine one by one. The first thing I noticed at NSM was a container of ear plugs (awesome!) at the check in window. [Very thoughtful as I have friends my age who have 50% hearing loss due to clubbing, music festivals and annual BM.] The owner, Teela, was friendly and i purchased a 5 class pass with a 3 month expiration date. I took Demone's 2p beginning hip hop then his 3p cardio hip hop. I can honestly say that IF his ENTIRE class would be like the 15 min easy to follow "warm up", I would take his class again & again. The only difference I could discern between the 2p & 3p classes was faster pacing and more people and in 3p class he had ppl move to different rows occasionally. He told us he was making up choreo on the spot and it showed as he occasionally forgot some steps. I spoke to a regular student afterwards and found out that Demone's routine changes every single class but other teachers like Corey & Teela will keep same routine for a month. Demone -- the first thing he did when we all assembled was to introduce himself and shake my hand. Additional things I liked: 1. Amiable, easy going. 2. Able to connect quickly with the group; 3. infectious, positive energy, highly enthusiastic; 4. warm up is easy to follow; 5. music volume not overly loud. My wish list is as follows: 1. break down moves body part by body part. It was up to me to analyze his moves & figure out things like - keep left leg straight while weight in right foot, etc. (This was more thinking that I wanted to do.) 2. Keep students' heart rate up and 100% attention focused on students. In both classes, there were many breaks where Demone told us to drink water, or he was fiddling with music, or chatting with Teela. I took the 2nd class thinking that I would sweat but I did not. 3. For beginner class, try simpler choreo or better yet, teach a continuous 60 min class with no official breaks and make moves easy to follow-like in warm up. 4. Emphasize abs and core strength in commands throughout class and warm up/cool down-- my lower back spasmed in both classes. In talking to a dancer afterwards, I should have kept my abs in throughout- especially in the side to side jerky motions. 5. Balance choreo so that both sides of body get equal attention. I realize hip hop isnt yoga, but I felt more worked on my right side than my left. read more

New Style Motherlode Studio - Complimentary ear plugs - Performing Arts Near Me - Oakland, California

New Style Motherlode is one of my favorite places in the world--honestly. I started going to the cardio hip hop classes at NSM at its College Ave. location and have continued at their new location at 4225 Broadway, with it's beautiful bamboo wood floor, big bright windows and incredible dance teachers. I try to go at least 3X a week to cardio classes--the rest of my day is always better when I've attended an NSM cardio class in the morning. (The kids and teen classes are really popular, too. I've had my 7 year old take classes at NSM, also.) The choreography is fantastic--simple enough to follow (they break it down) and hard enough for it never to feel like the same old eight counts. I feel like a hip hop dancer when I am in the class (even though I am in my 40s) . There are people of all ages dancing in this studio. On occasion some of the "real hip hop dancers" who've been dancing with Corey forever join in and amp up the energy in the studio--and we all get twice the workout (which means napping later). It's great. I love Corey Action's choreography, Momo LeBeau's energy, and Jennifer Field's style and spunk. Teela, the co-owner of the studio is also great--I got to know her this year as she provided leadership/coaching for Platinum, the women's 30 year old+ performance dance group that I participated in. The studio has recently been adding new instructors, classes and dance styles, such as house, contemporary, salsa and Zumba, to their mix. I know Jazz and some other fitness style classes are coming soon, too. I love seeing them grow and am so glad to have this one of a kind place to go and dance my heart out. If you're looking for a studio--I highly recommend New Style Motherlode. read more

2nd time taking Cardio Hip Hop w/Jennifer. This is an addictive workout that leaves you sweating buckets, and oh so accomplished! It's a great way to start the day when you leave feelin a little bit more talented :)! Focusing on the choreographed, sexy moves sure is a fun way to focus on your body and self and forces you to stop thinkin about all other serious things in life for an hour! (Because if my mind starts drifting...I forget all the moves and look real silly!). Love it! Also..it miraciously cured my hangover :) read more

I'm a Momo disciple and followed him recently to New Style Motherlode after taking his nighttime hip-hop cardio classes over the past year at the UC Berkeley Recreational Student Facility. Wish I knew about this place a long time ago! It's a beautiful and airy dance space in a really convenient location, the students are super-friendly, and Momo -- obviously -- is the messiah of hip-hop instruction. Not even kidding. I'm addicted. It's kind of a problem. New Style Motherlode enables my addiction, too, by linking to a make-your-life-so-much-easier app that lets you purchase different class series, gives you the upcoming schedule for the week and lets you sign up for a class right up until it's about to start. In conclusion: NSM is just another reason to hella heart Oakland. read more

Fierce! I am a regular to the Thursday Jazz classes with the new instructor Sarita. In a word she is FANTABULOUS. Now for you technical dancers, Sarita knows her shit. She can work you like mia michaels, but will have you cracking up at the same time. This class is the full package and I have yet to find a drop-in adult jazz class with this amount of flavor. read more

I had a great first time experience taking Corey's class, thanks to a friend who invited me... he was very personable and when he started the warm up, you can feel the excitement in the room! The room had at least 30 women from age 25 all the way to 70 and he broke down the moves so we can understand it... the music was from the 90s mixed with today's dance beats. The women were nice and friendly and does not give off the competitive dancer vibe. Everyone was there having a great time... and you sweat! He has a great personality and he incorporates the "heart" sign or something about empowerment in his routine. Lastly, he personally thanked me for attending his class and commented on seeing me groove and follow along. I am hooked! read more

Decided to drop in their Jazz I/II class this past thursday. Robin, our instructor, will work you. This class is an hour and a half long with the first hour feeling like it's a boot camp. Don't get me wrong, homegurl will make you feel great. I was SO sore the next day but it was a good pain. This class is obsessed with ab work outs and toning your arms and thighs. If you're going in with NO experience with jazz, then the last 30 minutes will mean nothing to you. You have to have some jazz and ballet techniques down before jumping into their routine. Attitude: Not much attitude at all. A lot of the regulars were nice and encouraging for my friend and I who made a fool of ourselves rolling and stumbling across the dance floor. Class size: perfect. About 8-10 people. Enough for Robin to give you attention if you need it, which was a lot for my friend and me. I'd just go for homegurls work out. read more

Great choreography, awesome musica, inspiring, kind instructors, beautiful space. I went to Corey's beginning hip hop class. I'm a decent dancer that struggles with following choreography. Corey had a great warm up and he eased us into choreography through simple, natural movement. It was a great way to start learning how to command my limbs and there was a lot of room to make movements more exaggerated (Corey really made it look beautiful and complex because of how he did everything in the simple sequence). Will definitely be back again. read more

I took my daughter here for her first time last weekend and I will just say that my expectations were exceeded by 1000%! This is based on my experience with other kids dance classes. The studio had a welcoming feel from the moment we walked up the steps. Mr. J was AMAZING and I was so impressed by the way he kept the kids engaged the entire time!! My 3 year old was hesitant but after about 2 minutes she got into it and told me she wanted to do this again next week. I also got a great work out :) read more

I've known Corey and Teela since way back when they taught at the then Alice Arts Center and they've really created an amazing dance studio and following! Pretty much every single class is taught by a kick ass instructor that really has the chops to teach. There is nothing worse then going to a dance class feeling like you know more then the teacher. On the flip side, most classes unless otherwise noted are mixed level and very welcoming to beginners. The reviews of Sarita's jazz are spot on - she is the only decent adult commercial jazz in SF and the East Bay. The space is small, so a word to the wise: watch your spacing. And if you don't, just stay out of my way. read more

I was tipped off to this place by my yoga teacher, who kept asking us at the end of our anusara session, "Who wants to join me for some hip-hop dance?" My heart wanted to say yes, but back-to-back with yoga? Who's got the energy? Well now I'm on a different yoga schedule, and I was looking for something to shake up my running/yoga routine. Enter New Style Motherlode! I love this joint! The cardio hip-hop classes are perfect: challenging enough that you're actually working on putting the combination together and getting the moves just right, but not some hoity-toity dance class that takes itself really seriously. It doesn't matter if you are an expert dancer or just someone who wants to have fun- all are welcome. People with little or no sense of rhythm will definitely be challenged- keeping up with Corey's, Jennifer's or Demone's moves is no small feat. But you will sweat like a dog and you will love every minute. read more

New Style Motherlode Studio - Performing Arts Near Me - Oakland, California

i ventured here one day to try out their beginning hip hop class. was it fun? oh, yes. was it hard? OH, YES. at least for me who has never taken a dance class before. regardless, if you can deal with ego droppage, this is a really fun place to take classes. the teachers are cool, the classes are diverse, and thankfullly, there isn't too much attitude. check out http://www.newstylemotherlode.com for more information! read more

I battled between 3 and 4 stars for a minute, but I have a soft spot for small dance studios struggling to make it, so 4 stars it is! I've been here a handful of times and have always enjoyed the welcoming vibe. While the dance studio is small, the classes are a blast and a great workout, especially their cardio classes. But I don't know why they called last night's class "Cuban Cardio" unless shaking your hips to a J. Lo song is somehow Cuban. Still fun though-- you don't have to tell me twice to work them hips. Unfortunately their prices just went up to $15 per drop-in for adults, but you can get a discount by buying a 10 or 20 class card. read more

Hands down the greatest studio ever. I mostly take the cardio hip hop class which always gives me a fun yet challenging workout but I also love the sexy ladies class with jennifer. Jennifer and Corey are wonderful teachers that will amaze you with their talent and charm. This studio is definitely the only one of its kind and I wish I could go more but have not been going since I moved. read more

I can't believe I have never written a review of this place. LOVE it...as in, I moved away for a year, and this was the thing I missed most about Oakland. This morning, I packed up baby, loaded her into the car at 9am, told the early-morning surfer hubby to meet me at New Style Motherlode (to pick up said baby so mama could get groove on)...arrived at NSM to find it looking very closed, and somewhat officially closed...as in never gonna open again. Thankfully, the signs redirected me to their NEW studio at 4225 Broadway. The new place is hard to find - look for the grafitti-laden building - as there is no sign OR numbers. But the parking is easy, the studio is spacious, and the lady I love (that would be Miss Jennifer) is there on Mon/Wed/Sat mornings (and then some). Shake it, don't break it people. You gotta check out this uniquely Oakland scene. read more

Hate that I live so far or I would come at lest 2x a week. Corey will have you working your butt off, have you feeling like an MC hammer dancer. read more

This outstanding studio, with it's very talented staff, is the best hip hop studio in all of Northern CA. From my first class over 4 years ago to this very day, I have enjoyed the artistry and choreography of Corey Action, Jennifer and Demone, and I always, always come out of their amazing classes full of joy, knowing I had danced a full hour with the best teachers around. I am a retired ballet coach and I travel 45 minutes to get there, and it is more than worth it. This studio has restored my love of dance over and over, and I look forward to more. Thank you NewStyle MotherLode, Stephanie in Dublin read more

The energy is awesome and the talent is inspiring. Check out Sarita's Jazz class on Thursday nights at 6. She is sexy and technically savvy! It is a great adult jazz class in the East Bay! read more

My friend and I took MoMo's hip hop class last night and it was so FUN! He had so much energy and joy that it was contagious. We have each other high fives as we switched places. The choreography had me sweating and smiling all along the way. We both decided to come back next week! Mondays 6-7 pm. So glad New Style Motherlode holds it down in Oakland! Hey! read more

Loving Corey's classes. I have been dropping in a few times a year for the past couple of years and doing the bulk of my dance classes elsewhere, however, I was itching for a new space to express myself and decided to take the plunge and bought a class pass so that it would force me to go. I really love the music first and foremost, it always puts me in a great mood. I am digging the choreo so far and find it fun, challenging and inspiring. I also like the vibe of Corey's classes, in particular, it seems he has a loyal following and his students are friendly and personable which is sometimes hard to find in a dance studio. 5 stars! read more

This is a great hip hop dance studio if you are experience and eve if you are not. I find the students and teachers to be very friendly which usually is the opposite at some of these dance schools. The music is great, some old school hip-hop mixed in with the newer. It is an amazing workout!! read more

New Style Motherlode is outstanding. The teachers are genuine and kind and completely helpful. Unlike many dance studios, where only the truly talented get corrections, every member of the class gets thoughtful help whenever she needs it. The other students are also friendly and fun. All together, the atmosphere is one of a happy community--almost a family--very welcoming to anyone, of any level of skill or experience. Also, I took classes there several years ago but then moved away for a couple years. When I went back, the instructors remembered me, even my name. Amazing and wonderful. I love it! You need to take class here. read more

FUN! A friend got us to try a saturday morning class with Teela after months of coaxing. As a professional hula dancer I can be really hesitant to try new styles (aka anything I might suck at) but Teela's class was fast paced, challenging, and most of all a BLAST. My hula sister and I left on a cloud and were so hooked we bought a series. The only other class we've done so far is Momo's monday night cardio hip hop which was equally as fun, but did move at a slightly slower pace which is not bad at all. We still sweat our arses off. Monday nights are much more manageable for us as my body is no longer willing to function after one of these classes, so saturday mornings leave saturdays utterly useless for my out of shape self. I love that the classes have different choreo for each class which makes it east to drop in when you want/can, vs feeling like your missing a piece of a routine if you miss a class. Be ready to SWEAT like crazy in the best way possible with a group of encouraging, enthusiastic folks and great instructors. read more

The toddler class is so great, my daughter loves it, and I love getting to dance with her. Ms Teala is a fantastic teacher, really engaging, fun, and friendly. Also so nice that it's drop in - really convenient and easy to stop by on Saturdays when we're in town. And such a good deal for $12! read more

Corey Action at this hip hop dance studio is off tha chain as a dancer and is also an incredible teacher. He really breaks it down and is very creative in his class choreography. Corey has great taste in music and is always slappin good tracks. Try the Intro to hip hop on Sundays at 2pm! read more

NSM is the best (and most fun) workout I've ever found! The studio head, Corey Action, is extremely talented as a performer, choreographer and teacher. He knows how to hire teachers for the studio that embrace his fun approach to teaching and he has inspired lots of kids over the years to use dance as a positive outlet. The cardio hip hop class attracts all ages and I'm guessing there's no other studio in the Bay Area that can have teens side by side with a 60 year old (the majority of folks are in their 20's, 30's and 40's). Of course, that's not just any 60-year old who can keep up with the pace of these classes! The group is super friendly and all newcomers are made to feel comfortable. The hip hop dance classes are great for those who watch the videos and wonder how to do the steps. The beginning class pace is good for newbies and the advanced classes will challenge the experienced dancer. Check it out - you won't be sorry! read more

Kind of disorganized...instructor late 15 minutes, kids stretch for 15 minutes, more time spent trying to find appropriate clean music...instructors fiddling around while kids are standing around looking bored. So for a 60 minute class, kids got to dance for maybe 20 minutes. Oh well. read more

Cardio hip hop is an excellent class and the kids' dance program is awesome. This is my daughter's second home. Corey and his staff are the best! read more

This is the BEST dance studio. I started going over the weekends when I had to give up my regular hip hop class at my gym because of a longer commute. I've only gone to the Sunday 3PM class so far and the instructor is absolutely fantastic. A great hip hop dancer and instructor, the choreography is always different and interesting and most importantly, I have yet to meet a snooty person in the studio. Everyone is nice and welcoming, people are at varying abilities but everyone has a great time. They could seriously give lessons to other studios on how it's done right. Get ready to get a 20 class pass - you'll need it. read more

I found this dance studio far too late. I am moving to Denver at the end of June and I count this as one of my biggest losses leaving this area. The dancers/teachers are totally committed to giving you the best hour ever! I love hip-hop and I never feel intimidated or embarassed at my abilities here. The routines are always dynamic and fun! I absolutely love all the teachers, especially Jennifer and Demon's cardio hip hop. You will always feel good energy at this studio. All ages and abilities are here. I love you guys! read more

This place is the bomb! I've been looking for a dance studio to go to on a regular basis and found it at New Style Motherlode. The prices are cheaper in comparison to other studios I've been to (especially in San Francisco and Oakland). The staff is also very friendly! Other reviews say that there is never anybody at the front desk, but that's how they keep the prices low. I don't want to pay extra to have a receptionist at the front desk when I can check in with their ipad and save me the cost of their overhead with staff. The way they teach is easy to follow and for all levels of dancers. My boyfriend who is a beginner dance even decided to join me last minute tonight because he didn't feel pressured or judged and more invited and curious because of the feel good vibe here. The people that go to New Style Motherlode are from all walks of life. There are young college students, mothers who bring their kids in to hang out while they get their cardio on, older white men who are just there to sweat it out and the people who join the class are there to work it out and not what you find at many dance studios --- a bunch of people in bandanas and dance clothes doing super sophisticated stretches and twirls and plie's. You feel the good vibe the moment you come in and I love watching the classes before and after that include both kids hip hop and capoeira. THIS PLACE IS A GEM! SO GLAD I FOUND IT! read more

This is a fantastic dance studio. Try it. It's not fancy, actually the digs could really use some work, but the instructors are great, it is reasonably priced and they have a good variety of classes. I danced with Corey long ago at the Oakland Y and I'm so happy he has his own place. read more
