Claire is colorful and fun and she will break the ice quickly enough to feel comfortable engaging with her and with your group, even if you are all strangers to each other (we were all working colleagues, but it was my first time meeting most of them). Beware rated R topics and stories but that's what we were all down for! Lots of good stories with historical context, opportunity and encouragement to take photos, and consideration of people and atmosphere around us. I appreciate that she took us off to the side of busier spots so we could actually hear what she was saying. Wouldn't change a thing about the experience except for what I was wearing. So she made a reservation on her phone and we headed out to this shop located on Magazine Street in the French Quarter. This part of the French Quarter was much different than the part I'd been exposed to all trip near Bourbon Street. This part of the French Quarter was more quiet, more abandoned, more local. I was told that this was the part of the French Quarter that is more residential. Anyways back to the tour, it cost about $35 per person and we had a group of 15 people. Our tour was a pub crawl as well as a ghost tour. We met in front of the shop at 730p and our wonderful tour guide took us all through the French Quarter on streets that I had definitely never been to. But what was wonderful was we got to visit locations that were definitely not on the tourist guides or on social media. The tour consisted of the group walking to a bar or interesting landmark and our tour guide would tell us an old ghost story that allegedly occurred at some point in New Orleans history at that location. It was pretty cool. At each stop the group would go into the pub and grab a drink if they wanted to. The tour lasted 90 minutes and ended at one of the most famous bars in New Orleans. I won't spoil it but it was a very cool place. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about New Orleans and it was very interesting seeing New Orleans come alive at night in a way that was much different than Bourbon Street. I attended Unique NOLA's French Quarter walking tour on Thursday morning, and unfortunately, my…read moreexperience was so uncomfortable that I ended up leaving the tour early. For context, I was the only Black person in our group. Our first stop was an area where the guide, Dane, discussed the history of slavery in New Orleans, including where enslaved people were held and the streets they were marched down to be sold and traded. During his explanation, Dane began discussing Louisiana's racial hierarchy and how people who were partially Black could sometimes own property and attain certain positions in society. Rather than simply explaining this historical context, he decided to single me out in front of the entire group. He pointed directly at me and said, "I'm going to use you as an example." I responded, "Are you really?" He replied, "Yes, really." Despite my very obvious discomfort, he proceeded to explain that if he and I were cousins, he would be able to rise through the ranks of society because he was white-passing, while I would never be able to reach the top of society because of my dark skin. Again, I was the ONLY Black person in the group. There were countless ways to explain the historical realities of colorism and racial discrimination without pointing out the only Black person present and making her skin color the subject of a public demonstration. What made the situation even more frustrating was that I had already questioned his decision to use me as an example. My response should have been a clear indication that I was uncomfortable, yet he continued anyway. I came to learn about the history and culture of New Orleans, not to be singled out and used as a living example of racial discrimination in front of a group. Discussing slavery and racial inequality is an important part of understanding the city's history, but doing so requires sensitivity, awareness, and respect for the people participating in the tour. I ultimately decided to leave rather than continue participating in an experience that had made me feel so uncomfortable. I hope Unique NOLA takes this feedback seriously and provides its guides with additional training on how to discuss sensitive historical subjects without unnecessarily singling out guests. No one should have to experience this while simply trying to enjoy a walking tour.

While we waited for all eight passengers to fill our carriage, he kept us entertained, introduced himself, and made sure we met the real star of the show, his mule, Frida. The tour was packed with ghost stories, vampire lore, local history, and plenty of humor. Our guide had a way of telling stories, complete with a wonderfully spooky tone of voice, that made everything a little more atmospheric. It was never actually scary, but that was part of the fun. He knew how to draw you into a story, slip in some fascinating historical details, and then catch you off guard with a joke. We also passed several filming locations from movies and television shows, including two of our favorites, Interview with the Vampire and The Originals. Seeing those familiar spots while hearing the stories behind them was a bonus. Another perk? Getting to sit back and enjoy the city after spending most of the day exploring on foot. The mule-drawn carriage was a welcome break for our tired feet, and seeing New Orleans from a different perspective was a treat. My only complaint is that I wished the tour had lasted longer! We were having such a good time that it seemed to end far too soon. Wish he would have projected more. Thought about just doing the walk through the cemetery on our own- but I'm glad we took a tour because we learned about the burial rituals, architecture of the city, history, and facts about Marie Laveau. After the cemetery portion, we took a break at the visitor's center where we were able to grab a drink and have a bathroom break which was nice. George then pointed out on a map the geography of New Orleans and talked a little about Katrina, which was a nice addition to the tour. I was a little disappointed with the voodoo portion.
