I'm not the type of person to like going to the doctors very much. I guess it's being from America,…read moreit's entrenched within me to avoid the doctor whenever possible. However, when a mysterious swelling and itchiness started showing up on my legs and feet (no bug bites, didn't resemble an allergic reaction either) I decided to forgo my stubbornness and head over to a walk-in session: (Walk-Ins are available from 9 to 11 every morning, but I recommend getting in before 8:30 opening time to register your name early to avoid longer queues) I met with Dr Simon Braybrook so this review is primarily for him. 1 star off because I haven't had much experience with any other doctor to know if the experience I have is consistent throughout the practice (but will be happy to update my review if I find this to be the case). Dr Braybrook was VERY good + He walked me through all of his thought process so I understood what was going on instead of just blindly following instruction (that I just can't do! My nerves won't be able to handle it). ( ie: He thought the simplest solution would be that it's a possible bacterial infection such as cellulitis so prescribed me antibiotics but said that if it hasn't gotten any better or returns then he wants a blood test to test for auto-immune. It wasn't just a "ok here's some antibiotics off you go", I felt involved in my own diagnosis and treatment! ) + He answers all questions, no matter how silly they might sound. And he answers them fully - this is probably why during my first appointment with him, he was training medical students! He's really great at explaining the entire process. + He took me seriously. I have a family history of lupus so even though I don't experience any of the major symptoms, the fear or auto-immune is always at the back of my mind. I've heard about a lot of doctors who brush off these worries because of the slim likelihood but he definitely seemed to understand where I was coming from with my fears. --- They also have a conjoining pharmacy that handles all your prescriptions. Overall, I leave Butetown Medical Practice feeling very informed about my health and the thought of "going to the doctor" isn't such a bad thing after all. If you've just moved into the area and you're in need of a clinic, I highly recommend requesting Dr Braybrook - a great practitioner!

Every occasion I have had cause to visit I have always been pleasantly impressed with how friendly the staff are, receptionists, nurse and doctors (Dr Short is fantastically personable). Monday to Friday inclusive 9.00am - 12 noon 3.00pm - 6pm Phone lines operate from 8.30am. The surgery is closed for staff training every Monday from 1 - 2.15 pm. A number of clinics are run from the practice. Antenatal Care offers routine antenatal check-ups by a qualified midwife on Wednesday afternoons. Mother and Baby offers vaccinations for all children up to age 5 and a well-baby clinic. The baby-weighing drop-in session is 10.15-11am on Thursday mornings. The NHS does not pay for some of the services they provide. These include private sick notes, insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, passport signing and some vaccination services. Ask at reception for advice on the practice fees for these services, which are in line with British Medical Association approved national guidelines.

Going into the waiting room it is a little unnerving, feeling like you're going to be diagnosed by a slightly addled auntie with seven cats. But, having said that, the receptionist I spoke to today was lovely. You know you sometimes get those receptionists who look at you like you're wasting everybody's time, you aren't really ill? Well, she was the complete opposite - in fact, I'm fairly sure she called me lovely. What a nice way to start the day! I actually saw the nurse who led me down a little twisty path to her office (in what must have been an extension). She was efficient without being brisk. Her manner was very friendly and I felt at ease. Also, she gave me a prescription! That might make me sound a little bit like a junkie but I do find that some doctors will tend to dole them out willy-nilly while others keep their forms rather close to their chest. It's almost pot-luck as to whether you actually get one. However, I really felt as though I needed an inhaler, and now I've got one. She also booked an appointment for me to come in again in two weeks so that was all sorted. I must remember to ask her how her holiday went the next time I see her. She's going to New Jersey.

When I needed it, I had an appointment and I saw a kind and interested doctor who was "bang on the money" with the diagnosis. I've got to remind myself this is a NHS-driven surgery, not the fourth ring of hell…read more As a Bay resident, this is my local doctor's centre, and I always dread a forthcoming visit. Oh Lord, the waiting you'll do here. I know it's par for the course normally, but even with an appointment, you can anticipate a 30-45 minute wait time. Bring a good book is all I can say. Situated in the heart of Bute Street, the Butetown Health Centre is a bit on the grim side, and really in need of a refurbishment, if not for the patients, then for the high-quality doctors and nurses who grace its doors. The centre houses a few GPs, but I can only comment on the treatment I've been given by the Dr. Sauders' surgery. The receptionists are always very pleasant and helpful, but the poor doctors and nurses are normally rushed off her feet (I guess like any other doctor practice - seems a universal thing!). But the most important thing is that they always listen to what I have to say, and never dismiss me with a wave of the hand and a "Oh, just take some paracetamol." So hence the three star rating - the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, but the place is in dire need of a makeover.

All staff, and I include ALL, work their socks off, it's a very demanding and diverse area and, without fail, I have always witnessed kindness, consideration, professionalism and courtesy at all junctures. In my humble opinion, it's (like everywhere on NHS) short staffed, underfunded and over subscribed. Having moved around South Wales, I can safely say this is the best practice I've had - by a country mile.

I say this because I have found it hard myself when I've been trying look up certain companies information and details about the place and to have a good photograph on hand to know what the company looks like. So it is great to have people like us going out and about experiencing places like this surgery. Or by simply taking a trip down memory lane; by writing about where we have been in the past. This surgery is a small place where it has a reception desk and a waiting room for you to wait and here your name be called for a doctor's appointment. Swine Flu Vaccinations are taken place here at this surgery now. This is particularly for those people who are 65 years of age or older and women who are pregnant. You need to go to the surgery to make an urgent appointment. The building has access for disabled patients, but be aware that this is located through their car park at the rear. All records for every individual are kept confidential and this company is a part of the NHS. I recommend this place to all locals to use as the staff are very caring and kind.
