It's a medieval thatched building, located next to a country stream, with a (mainly) steam operated preserved railway (a former branch of the GWR - Great Western Railway or God's Wonderful Railway, according to locals) running on the adjacent embankment. So a quiet pint in its garden in summer certainly ticks the location boxes. And on the victualling side of the equation, the service is friendly, the (largely local) beers well kept, and the food very well prepared and well presented. Our friends showed up and we went in for our reservation for 7 and our table was ready. Good kids food menu and great adult menu too! We had bangers n mash, Brie n cranberry Wellington, prawn wrap, Lasagna and the kids had nuggets n chips w the peas which were better than the pub yesterday. Highly recommended. I remember looking longingly at the outdoor patio and what could only be barbeque equipment cloaked under plastic cover before entering the pub. If only the weather was nicer, I am sure the place would be buzzing with people drooling over the grill. Although we didn't arrive until 2:15pm after a wet and windy walk at the nearby Seatown, the staff cheerfully accepted our order (their last food order for lunch is 2:30pm). My boyfriend had the venison burger, I had the Chideock Scotch egg, and my friend had the goat cheese salad. Everything was prepared with great care and perfectly seasoned. It was fantastic value for money too, with the bill coming in just under £30 for three people with some food and a drink each. I highly recommend a quick (or slow!) bite here for those in the area.

The portion of goats cheese I had was very generous (some places only give you a small amount because of cost I guess) although I felt it was a bit heavy to be a mousse. It was really nice all the same. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pommes anna was a perfect accompaniment. The pub's decor probably didn't quite match the quality of the food and I think some people will be surprised how good the food it. The was a really good range on the menu from unusual items (I'd never had samphire before) to regular items such as burgers and fish and chips. I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe.
