This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). Lola is the other dog but she doesn't like me talking about her behind her back so to save time let's just say Monkey is the cuddly one. *looks round nervously to check I'm not being watched* East Keswick is just up Wetherby Road- and the great news is you can get the 98 and 99 buses from town to RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DAMN PUB DOOR! Can't argue with that logic. The pub has a Snug at the front where dogs of all shapes, sizes and aromas are made to feel truly welcome. There's a tv for catching up with sports, an open fire, a doggly bowl and some cracking local beers and ales on offer. I had a pint of Mary Jane from the Ilkley Brewery and it was luscious. We'd first bunged the dogs in the car and had lunch in the restaurant part of the pub- which in contrast to the homely snug is really pretty classy for a pub meal. I think an evening meal here would impress. The staff were warm and welcoming and we had 3 courses for £15.95 each, with a decent bottle of red wine this brought the bill to just over £50, which is pretty reasonable for doing it 'all' and less pricey options were available e.g 2 courses for £12.95. This is for Sunday Lunch and there are weekday menus too. To start I had chicken liver pate which was smooth with a decent portion of chutney. Ade had ham terrine which was again sizeable and competently done. Both dishes were well presented and came with Melba toast. All very very good fare. For mains I went for the lamb cutlets and Ade the beef roast. The portions were again pretty sizeable, the roasts generous, crisp yet fluffy, mixed veg was properly al dente and had nice variety.....but it was the lamb that really stood out above everything else. Four almost fist sized hunks of perfectly cooked quality meat, pink on the inside, melt in the mouth and with a subtle and creamy peppercorn sauce to lubricate the GIANT mouthfuls I was pushing into my greedy face. It was sublime and my pleasure sensors were bordering on ridiculous. All this scumptiousness was topped off by Ade's dense and super sweet Sticky Toffee Pudding and the heavenly dark matter that made up my Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake. Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. We staggered back to the car to 'release the hounds' and then enjoyed the friendly snug for a slow drinking pint as we digested our heavy yet heavenly loads. Monkey in particular made SUCH a friend of the barman that every time he passed by and patted her head she jumped up, wrapped her front paws around his thigh and tried to walk off with him. I went on my birthday with my family last year and despite there being 18 of us, we were served quite quickly and the food was delicious. You can always count on seeing someone you know, despite it being a tiny place in the middle of nowhere. There is one bus an hour heading up to Holme, but really you need a car - or good walking shoes! Definitely worth a visit for any locals who haven't been and any visitors to the area who are always made welcome.

Sure enough, there he was, Franklin Fisher. Sue even offered to send me a copy of the document. She also confirmed the location of our 4th G Grandparent's pub, The Tunnel End Tavern- which was in the current location of another hotel in Diggle- that is near the 'tunnel's end'. I wont name it- but the owner was condescending and downright abusive. Sue was lovely- as were almost all the people we met on our journey through Oldham. I can't wait to go back!

Our recent visit to this establishment was marred by poor conduct, a lack of professionalism, and…read morean inappropriate level of personal judgment from staff -- resulting in what should have been a simple family meal turning into an unnecessarily uncomfortable experience. Upon arrival, we ordered a round of drinks, including one, legally permitted alcoholic drink for my 16-year-old daughter, in accordance with Section 149(5) of the Licensing Act 2003, which allows for 16- and 17-year-olds to consume beer, wine, or cider with a table meal when accompanied by an adult. We were told that food would need to be ordered for her drink to be served (after we had been sat with our drinks for at least 10 minutes)-- a reasonable condition, and we immediately complied by placing a food order for the party, a £20 sharing platter with extra fries (fries were £6!) Our meal was served, and we proceeded to enjoy our meal without issue. After finishing our food, I attempted to order a second round of alcoholic drinks for 2 adults in our group, along with an ice lolly for a younger child. At that point, we were abruptly informed that no further alcohol would be served to anyone in our group, despite the fact that no additional drink had been requested for my daughter. We were informed the manager was not there but they rang the member of staff and told them not to serve us anything else further. I would like to note at this stage, we were sat chatting about our week and our youngest daughter/granddaughters sports day (hardly criminal behaviour). What followed was not only inappropriate but highly unprofessional. A member of staff made a personal and unsolicited comment, accusing me of "encouraging a 16-year-old to drink" -- a deeply offensive and legally inaccurate accusation. We were not in breach of any law, we were not intoxicated, and we were not acting irresponsibly. We had followed every instruction given to us in good faith. It's important to be clear: * We were served an initial round of drinks, with the understanding that food must be ordered for the 16-year-old -- and we complied. * We did not attempt to purchase any further alcohol for her. * The only request made after the meal was for adult (only 2 alcoholic drinks between 3 adults) drinks and a child's dessert item. * The staff chose to refuse further alcohol service based on a personal and moral judgment, not law or customer behaviour. If an establishment enforces internal policies stricter than legal requirements, it is within their right to do so -- but such policies must be communicated clearly (and prior to any purchase of alcohol for anyone within the party) and applied consistently, without condescension or personal insult. The staff's behaviour in this case reflected neither good judgment nor good training. And while I would normally refrain from such personal observations, I must note: I will not be taking parenting advice from someone whose own personal hygiene -- particularly in regard to his dental hygiene -- raises serious questions about self-care, let alone professional standards. (If this establishment can pass personal judgment then I am entitled to reciprocate their tone). We left feeling insulted, patronised, and unwelcome -- all despite having followed the rules and behaved respectfully throughout. I would not return, and I would urge others to think twice before spending money in a venue where lawful, respectful customers are treated with such disdain.
