I never thought that I'd ever rate a No Frills this high, but this store deserves it. It's special…read more On Christmas Eve Eve (not a typo), I was at work for a year-end gathering. A snowstorm was forecast for the following day going into Christmas. I typically make Christmas dinner for my parents and me, so I moved it up a day and decided to get groceries on my way home. I had dinner in Etobicoke first. I then did a search to find the closest grocery store that would have stuffing and turkeys (not people, but the bird). I found this No Frills at The Albion Centre. I have been to this mall many times over the years, but never this store for groceries. It was a busy evening. There was construction down to a single lane along Albion Road. There were some impatient folks, but I managed to make a left turn and park near the No Frills. At first, my heart sank because to get a shopping cart, you needed a loonie to unlock it. Perhaps the stars were aligned that evening. I had a loonie with me and managed to get a cart. This No Frills is huge. It is my very first visit to one with a pharmacy. Sure enough, the pharmacy was open. It was cool checking it out as if it were an mirage. It's on the right side of the store when you enter the doors. The produce is fresh and lovely. It makes my local No Frills look shabby. I got all my veggies for my meal, including naturally imperfect carrots. A bag of them was $3. I'd sooner go with them than the organic ones that were going for double that price. I liked seeing individual-sized St. Hubert pies. I'm used to seeing a huge pie that feeds two people. It's nice knowing that individual portions exist. During the first year of the pandemic, you could only get huge turkeys. I had leftovers for weeks. It was refreshing to see four different weight categories for frozen turkeys. I went with a turkey that was roughly 4 kg. It was the smallest turkey that I have bought in years. I got stuck in the cereal aisle. The variety is impressive. I got a box of apple cinnamon Chex that I've never tried before. I also saw strawberry banana Cheerios for the first time. Despite being with shoppers who were also getting groceries before the snowstorm of doom was upon us, it was pleasant lining up to pay. Every single checkout lane was staffed and waiting didn't take long. Nice! I had the nicest woman help me cash out. I scanned my PC Optimum barcode from my phone and then paid with a debit card. I wished her a great evening and left. Once I placed my items in my car's trunk, I returned my cart to get my loonie. It felt old-school to me, except that the quarter that carts used to except has been upgraded to a loonie. Christmas Eve lunch turned out nicely, thanks to getting everything I needed for my meal here. I had a great experience at this store. I wish that my local No Frills was this great and inviting. It could learn a lot from this store, from providing fresh produce, to having friendly staff. (3)
