Math and ElA curriculum hasn't changed over decades which they consider a strength ( may be it is in ELA but not in math) but kids excelling in math at nvce struggle anywhere and everywhere.Text books are so old that even school has had time stocking them.One of the reasons curriculum doesn't change is because teachers esp in advanced grades know how to teach that book but not necessarily that topic so they simply stick with those old books for comfort level of teachers. Teacher's qualification is not disclosed on website .Many of them probably don't hold any degree in what they are reaching.Bejng a private school, teachers don't have to comply with ongoing education/training .School doesn't participate in AZ standardized tests Infact has its own metrics/standardized tests so you are unable to really see where it stands compared to rest of the school. School really focuses on grouping based on kids levels which creates an unhealthy competition among class and parents.A lot of teacher tutor right after school dismisses and students taught by the teachers during those sessions, are then able to advance into higher groups so basically you spend more money after paying the monthly tuition.This is a very very common trend. School participates in national history day which is good but problem is the teacher who runs that is very biased.Years ago when her own child was participated in these competitions ( from middle school to high school), he would win awards in almost all categories.People felt nepotism at its very best. The head of school, Stephanie Terrell, is one of the worst, most contradictory administrators I have ever had the chore of emailing weekly for an entire school year. She protects her teachers with a fierce bias and will not hold anyone accountable for the simple reason that its not worth her time because a teacher is retiring. Stephanie would rather put a parent on a "communication plan" to restrict their ability to ask questions and have transparent dialogue. BASIS teachers have repeatedly told parents that the children are irresponsible - such as at back to school night before they even know a child's name - and then spend the whole year discriminating against that child because they are young and can't possibly know how to advocate for themselves. God forbid the teachers actually take the time to teach logical, straight forward executive functioning skills without confusing both parents and students by over complicating everything and poorly communicating. My 1st grader had a stack of papers 9.5 inches high by the end of the school year. It had been so frustrating to try talking to anyone at the school about how much value paper pushing provides, that I actually did the math myself: my student had to have his butt in a seat quietly doing a worksheet every 14 minutes of the school day. How is this a demonstration of rigorous, advanced academics taught with hands-on learning techniques that promote problem solving? The only problem my kid had to solve was how to not let one toe fall out of line. His teachers spoke to him like he was dumb and took off academic points if he forgot to put his name or class on any of the several hundred papers he had to churn out. Then, they couldn't even keep track of what they had to grade, so they marked it missing and penalized my students grade, blaming it on him for not turning in his work. Again, it's his problem because he's an irresponsible child. They don't care about your student as a human. They care about their statistics. Better off going to CUSD where they max the classes at 24 kids (not 32 as at BASIS), they connect with you and your family on a personal level, and they don't try to shove valueless busywork in their face throughout the day to prove the kids are learning for their own inflated statistics.

I had to withdrawal my 8 year old daughter because I did not feel safe for her to finish the semester and I'm still very upset that this school not only took opportunities away from my daughter, but also caused her a great deal of problems with her self esteem.
