What we liked: lots of songbirds, easy access to paths, and the quiet! You don't have a ton of privacy, but since there are a LOT of empty spots it's manageable. Everyone we saw had tents or simple popups. Since there is no electricity there wasn't music blaring. People were friendly and chill. Dogs were well behaved and leashed. The vibe was great! Three stars mostly because the vault toilets are some of the worst I've seen. Survivable, but there aren't any working lights. The light from the outside that lets in fresh air through an open screen over the pit. Don't look. But it's hard not to when you need light. We glamped a bit with a Trelino portable composting toilet (highly recommend, no need for chemicals or fuss) as well as a bag shower we got from Walmart. The water near campsite 3 has poor water pressure. Use the one further down by the toilets. read more

New Glarus Woods State Park - Campsite 2. - Parks Near Me - New Glarus, Wisconsin

We have passed by this park a number of times but had never stopped. It doesn't have the Wow factor of many of the other great state parks in Wisconsin. But we finally went here to meet friends on a warm late May Sunday for a hike. We did the big loop around the perimeter of the park about 5 miles - boy there are a lot of hills. Very deceptive. The trails are well marked and in good shape. We did see the walk-in camping spots which looked interesting and somewhat private but pretty close to highway 69. There was a small picnic area where we ate our lunch afterward - it was nice enough. Overall not a bad park but it just doesn't have the big draw of nearby parks like Blue Mounds, Gov Dodge, Mirror Lake, etc. read more

This is definitely a five star state park one of the best and it is nice and quiet perfect camping and three minutes from A Culvers some of the best scenic camping and backpacking I've seen in a long time right off the roads that sounds nice and loud like a waterfall it's tops read more

This campground isn't awesome if you're trying to be one with nature. However, it is awesome if you want to be within walking distance of New Glarus Brewing Company. We spent a few hours at the brewery and walked back to our site no problem. The campground also connects with a really nice paved bike path that will take you all the way into town. The walk-to sites are pretty private and have carts to haul your gear from your car. Unfortunately, they're directly next to the highway so you'll hear traffic all day & night. We stayed here the summer of 2017 and had no issues with the rangers either. read more

New Glarus Woods State Park - Private walk-to site - Parks Near Me - New Glarus, Wisconsin

A beautiful State park just a little ways past New Glarus Brewing Co. If you are bringing your furkids with you, be careful when you exit your vehicle because the main road the parking stalls are off of is a through road leading to the other side of the highway. I have seen (literally) campers here but it's not my kind of style since the only thing separating you between your neighbors are scraggly trees and there are a ton of road noise as some of the campsites are right off of the main road entering the park area. We like to hike the Havenridge Trail as it's the longest trail at this park, approx 4 miles long total, but there are 8 other shorter trails under 2 miles long available if you're just looking to get away. Also keep in mind if you bring four-legged friends, half of the park is hunting/trapping land so just be aware. read more

This was a great spot for an overnight with children. Went to the brewery with my friends and their kids and then set up camp. We were here May 31st/June 1st, so early in the season. Look at the map and avoid sites by road (ex #17, it would be loud). We were in site #9 and it was close to the outhouses, relatively secluded, and relatively quiet. Other families around so the biggest late-night disturbance was raccoons. Hiking isn't extensive but great for a toddler and an eight-year-old. There's a great playground for kids so there's stuff to tire them out. Easy check-in and there's firewood available on-site. Nothing fancy, but it was fun. No showering facilities, FYI. read more

New Glarus Woods State Park - Morning at camp. - Parks Near Me - New Glarus, Wisconsin

The fact that people complain that the Rangers actually enforce quiet rules and require dogs to be on leash makes me love this park. If you want to blast music, have a party that annoys others and let your dog roam around... then camping isn't for you. read more

We had high hopes for this lovely little park as we drove through the charming town of New Glarus. Upon arriving at the park, we followed signs leading us to the office where a young man stood behind a desk, presumably waiting to help us reserve a campsite for the evening. He gave us a list of available sites, and sent us away to drive through the sites and choose one we liked. He told us, "After you decide, you can come back here to pay." The sign posted on the office read, "out of state fee: $11/night." We drove around, decided on a cozy spot (they're all cozy! Wooded, gorgeous, private sites!), and made our way back to the office where the same young man presented us with a number to call to complete our registration- no, we did not pay the young man, as was previously stated. A bit confused, we got back into our van and dialed the number to make our reservation. A woman answered the phone, and told us she could make the reservation for us with a $10 fee, but we should call them back on the "yellow phone" that was just installed at the park to avoid the fee (after being put on hold for about five minutes so she could check and see if indeed, the phone had been installed at this park) "What does a yellow phone do that's different than what we are doing talking to you on the phone now?" We asked. The woman paused and responded, "okay. I supposed we can waive the fee for you this time. What site did you say you'd like to reserve?" After we gave her all the necessary information for completing the reservation, she told us the price- which was $23 for one night- very different than the $11/night posted at the office. It's our guess she charged us the $10 fee without telling us that's what it was. Honestly, the price isn't an issue at all; we love supporting state parks, but the amount of hoop-jumping required to make a simple reservation for a site at which we'd be parked for less than 12 hours is ridiculous. And we never did find the infamous "yellow phone." read more

This is small park in comparison to others and how much you like it depends on your expectation and activities. Example, it's a beautiful place for a short hike so a nice escape. I couldn't imagine 'camping' here like others have mentioned too many bugs and way to close to town roads. Yet there are gently rolling hills, open prairie views, and a whole bunch of hickory stands so nice variety. Stop by if you are in the area, but don't travel too far just to see this park. read more

Nice park but there is no management here tonight. They have large parties exceeding the site guidelines. The people have set up a bar with hard liquor and they have loud music at 11 PM. Who does that by the way - blast music in a campground? read more

I gave New Glarus woods State Park only three stars, not because it was absolutely terrible, but only because I am comparing it to what a true five star State Park would be, which would be devils lake State Park. So because I am strictly comparing it to a true five star review, I thought it was only fair to give it three stars. The reason for the 3 stars is that our campsite was camp number 19, and it was pretty close to the highway, and I didn't feel so secluded in nature because I kept hearing cars driving by constantly and it just did not feel like I was in a getaway in the woods in silence. other than that, the campsite that we were at was very nice and perfect for me and my husband were camping there in my dog. I felt that we had a big space and we were very covered by trees and we could not see our neighbors which I really enjoyed that privacy. The only thing that I didn't like as well, is that it was a walk-in campsite, so you do have to park your car at at nearby parking lot and then walk all of your stuff to your campsite, so just be prepared to travel light. It was helpful that they did have two dollies that you can use to transport your equipment, but that's still not as convenient as having a drive-in campsite. There were also some trails and we ended up going on the smallest trail cuz we just wanted to relax and stay in our campsite, but the trails were nicely past and even had some information along the way on little billboard signs read more

Would not recommend anyone go to camp at this State park. Found the park rangers here to be more than difficult and rather unreasonable. With so many places to camp in Wisconsin I wouldn't waste my time on this location. Park rangers or not as campers we are the parks customers. Won't be going back that is for sure. read more

Worst campground ever! The rangers are extremely strict. Quiet hours and dogs I leash enforced at all times. Would never go back!!

Stopped to let the kids (7, 20 month old) play/hike. They have a great play set that has climbing walls, slides, and is safe for both young and old! Very clean and well kept with bathroom nearby. We went on a quick hike that was easy to navigate with the little ones. read more

Just stayed at this state park last weekend with a group of 5 of us all together. I know it's a tiny state park but it's such a great location! We went kayaking on the sugar river and the launch sites were within a reasonable range and also it's so close to the brewery that you could basically walk or bike there! Plus it's so close to the adorable town of new Glarus (which if you go into town you have to eat at kristi's, it's a must). The one thing that did stink (figuratively and literally) was that they didn't have showers. We ended up going to the public pool and showering there which costs 3 dollars and it's a group shower. Overall though, we loved our stay at new Glarus and we felt that the Rangers were fine and weren't as strict as other reviewers have said on here but to each their own. I would camp there again anytime! read more

It was around 11:30 PM and we were hanging out with our friends around the fire. They were registered campers from another site. Next thing we know the Park Ranger is kicking them out of our site. He was extremely rude and completely unreasonable. They have a crazy rule that no matter how quiet you are after a 11PM you can't have campers from other sites in your site. The whole point of us camping was to hang out together not be separated and treated like prisoners. It was a very unpleasant experience. read more
