When we went to go check out the…read moreschool I was a little weirded out by the well behaved quiet little kids, but right when I got there my son ran over to the class to join in without prompting. Everything they do is in 30 minute increments in order to encourage better focus. They also have a pretty cool playground that the kids play on twice a day. The have two 2.5 hour blocks of class time, which is when they do the whole weird well behaved time as they go to different stations and work on the activities of their choosing. During that time the teachers walk around ready to help guide/help any of the kids and also pull groups of about four kids to the side to work on things like numbers and letters. They also provide a monthly calendar with a theme of the month and daily things that they talk about during their group time (e.g. one month they talked about space and each day they would talk about certain planet, or about stars vs planets, etc.). It's nice because it helps you feel involved as you can talk about the topic of the day with them before or after school. One thing that I am not crazy about is you gotta drop them off at the door. When he first started I was little bummed that I couldn't see him settle in before I left, but I get it- they do it that way as to not have drop offs be too distracting for the other kids as they try to stay pretty on schedule.

He's included with the rest of the children but they respect his limits and encourage him to develop in his own time. They expect very little from the parents and give so much of themselves in return. I know that when I drop my son off he is well cared for, learns, has fun, and loves being at school. They started in the infant class after our leaves were up. The infant class is a little tough only because it's 0-12 month kiddos all together (and mostly tough for naps if you have a light sleeper) BUT Ms. Christina and her crew are so patient and experts at managing the chaos. Once our kiddo transferred into the next class (12-18 mos), there was a huge improvement in their sleep. Overall: The staff seem like they all truly care about all of the kids. There are fun spirit days quite frequently. Splash days during the summer. School events pretty regularly. Their hours are extremely helpful with our work schedules. There is a sibling discount. All the teachers are wonderful at giving recaps on how the day went, their nap, what they're struggling with, if they got owies, etc. They both LOVE going to school, and I love dropping them off and picking them up. It was very hard for me to choose someone else to care for my babies when they were little, and I am blessed to have found this school! The teachers work with each individual child to give them what they need most to grow. Other perks - They are year-round, have dance or soccer available, will cloth diapers, really help with potty training (they even let ME know when I could start making changes at home!), involve the whole child, and are unbelievably affordable in comparison to other schools. We love the date night opportunities, BBQ events, Halloween Trunk or Treat, etc. that is incorporated throughout the year. The school is AMAZING at getting families involved together (something I truly am terrible at!) Which goes above and beyond my expectations for a preschool. During the tour, I asked a few questions to confirm what they advertised on their website -- that they were a traditional Montessori school. I asked Patricia, the founder and director, if there were any ways in which they deviated from traditional Montessori practices and principles and she said, "no, we don't deviate at all from traditional Montessori practices." So, I was shocked when picking up my 2 year old a little early from "Montessori time" (830am-130pm) to find the entire school huddled around a TV watching Troll cartoons. This is a double whammy of violating the Montessori principles of not using technology/screen time and avoiding fantasy. After asking Patricia about it, she confirmed that they put the kids in front of the television when it was hot outside. (With the location in East County, it is hot a lot in the afternoons.) Given that they lied about staying true to traditional Montessori practices and principles, I didn't feel safe continuing to leave my toddler in their care, because I don't trust that they aren't misleading about other areas of their care. I understand if a preschool decides to use TV sometimes, but I don't feel that it's okay to mislead parents about it. Their communication has been terrible from day one, from not telling me everything I needed to bring with her on the first day of school even when I specifically asked, to not informing me of major milestones like the first time she went on the potty. Since I've pulled my daughter out, I have not been able to get a response from the school about getting my full refund (they only sent a check with a portion of the security deposit and no explanation on why they are not refunding me for the entire security deposit plus the days she will not be attending in July) nor a reply to any of my emails.
