Prohibition Liquor Co - Shiraz barrels because tasty

The Coffee section isn't quite ready yet but the rest is in full swing with the rear section due for some more work including a new copper pot still arriving in January. The design business Toolbox is under the same roof, tucked in behind their coffee bar. There is obvious street appeal from its corner location with dark walls, a full glass front with a vertical lift front glass door, minimalist but not cold and kind of starting to get a look of its own. The bath tub above the bar is a great touch. Our visit was part of a North Adelaide Primary School fundraiser, where Adam, co-owner with Wes in this bar enterprise, is a parent. Our group took part in gin flights, with some mixing and experimenting of our own, along with some knowledgable commentary from Adam. Some ordered dinner with options of sliders (x3) and fancy toasties while others enjoyed an antipasto assortment. I will admit I failed to properly peruse their menu options on this occasion and whilst this is a gin focussed bar they have enough to please whomever walks in. The staff were lovely and approachable and I mention this because this can sometimes be a deal breaker for customers. They source their (wine) spirit base from the Barossa and even the tonic water and vermouth they use as mixers are Australian. Our gin offering on the night was their staple small batch 42% craft gin, the shiraz barrel 60% craft gin, and their monster 69% bathtub cut gin which should carry a warning label (great with a splash of tonic). We also got lucky and tasted a 'Christmas release' gin special with a cake like nose and obvious holiday flavours, a perfect gift or something to sip on the actual day (see photos re tasting notes). I didn't eat or drink anything on the night I didn't enjoy and I think PLC will continue to grow and attract new customers and become a regular on the Adelaide scene. I'm hoping their coffee is phenomenal. If you like a gin you need to go and if you don't just come for a look - maybe all the medals and accolades displayed around the bar will be enough for you to get curious :)

We stood up at the bar and enjoyed the buzz of the place (not with doof doof music or loud obnoxious patrons) but with chatter and people weaving together a night of fun for themselves. You can also sit at a booth upstairs and watch over the crowd, perch in one of the windows at the front or sit on stools at small benches. If you are someone who hates making decisions, this tiny hole in the wall, 65 person bar has already made half of them for you. Their simple menu includes 3 beers on tap and a selection of craft brews by the bottle, 3 whites and 3 reds by the glass, a selection of wines by the bottle and then any cocktail you request can be made. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about all of the drinks on offer and make a point of telling you about what you are drinking, what it tastes like, or giving you recommendations. There are also only 4 food items on the menu - Coriole Olives, Pickels and 2 charcuterie boards made from The Charcuterie (a spin off from Lucia's Deli in the Central Market). We had the duck pate which doesn't sound or look that appetising but is actually not a paste but more of a shredded duck in pork belly fat goodness. The proscuitto platter again only came with bread and pickles but it didn't need anything else because of the quality of meat - it was a young cut of meat so not too typically proscuitto salty, very thinly sliced but still not bland. Now I have to warn all those typical Adelaidians our there who "refuse to line up." At 7pm on a Friday the line up was about 8 persons deep but we were inside within 20 minutes. Because this isn't a bar for spending hours and hours at people move in and out pretty quickly. So suck it up princess because CLT is worth the wait.

It was always my go to bar. Amazing cocktails and food in a great spot in the east end of Adelaide…read more The bartenders are super knowledgeable and they have a great spirits collection. Drinks and food I recommend: Spicy fried chicken Brisket po boy Beignets Lady NOLA cocktail

I went…read morewith a larger group and found it's energy exciting, but as a native of New Orleans (born and raised) not true to its name or particularly authentic. First of all, whiskey is native to the bluegrass state (KENTUCKY) and though whiskey is 'the drink' of the moment it's time too shall pass... Since the 1700s New Orleans is and has always been a rum city, but hey, why be bothered with the details or with authenticity, right? I mean who cares that the iconic poboy sandwich is supposed to be served on a French baguette (which could likely be sourced from another local biz just around the corner -Le Carpe Diem, Grenfell Street) when you could use a (possibly cheaper?) inferior Vietnamese roll? Back to the food: we sampled the fried chicken which was a very small serve for the price and it was accompanied by a mayonnaise 'sauce' - why is it needed? Is there bread to make a sandwich?!? Um, no. So, I gave it a go and found the sauce bland, tasteless, and utterly unnecessary. It's mayonnaise! With nothing else. Fried chicken in the States doesn't ever come with a sauce! Ever. Back to the chicken, it had a delightful crunch and was reasonably well seasoned but far too greasy. If served with grease glistening then it should sit on a piece of bread to soak up the oil OR should be blotted with paper. Not good. Next we had the Marlin tartar which was one of the few unique and creative takes on NOLA cuisine; it was presented on a crisp much like a Zapps' Potato Chip (for Western Hemi folks). This is something I can recommend without reservation. Then we sampled the rabbit stew - very, very tasty with just enough seasoning, however too much rice and not enough rabbit. One last thing, it is a total and complete sacrilege to have a Mardi Gras party on the first Friday of Lent. Pure and simple commercialization. If you can't do it on Shrove Tuesday, just give it up!

Oh yes, this was to be a patatas bravas off. I knew Udaberri's offering well. Crispy little steam pillows of potato, salted well and served with a moorish dipping sauce. Let's see what these Torinoites can do. They can present potatoes pretty well, that's for starters. The dish arrived on a lovely patterned plate in a sea of red sauce with some waves - a la Modern Australian circa 2006 - of mayo over the top. And a number of those cute little wooden chip fork things you see at music festivals. The sauce was vibrant and had just the right amount of heat. The potatoes were mostly soggy, with a few redeeming crispy specimens. The mayo was disappointing. Bland, stiff, and calling out for touch of Japan in Kewpie. Udaberri wins on the bravas. Though I wished they served it more traditionally. Torino gets many points for location and ambiance. * Guys, get your menu online.

Well located on Hutt Street so parking is not as much of an issue. Their drinks list is extensive with a good variety of cocktails too. For someone like me who doesn't drink, the bartender will more than happily make mocktails for you based on your preferred flavours and they are gooooood. Food here leans towards the tapas style but there are big plates you can order to yourself if you're not in a sharing mood. Always check the board for specials because that's how we got some pork belly! The cigars to me are a must, filled veal and tuna mayo it just has such great flavour and texture. We also tried the "toastie" filled with korean beef cheek and cheese which was delicious. We figured empanadas were a must so we ordered that too before our main of the Pork Belly Special with Cabbage. I have to say I find the pricing a little erratic with for eg. $5 for 1 small veal and tuna cigar and $6.50 for a whole toastie. It can however get quite noisy in there especially near the bar area at busy times so nab a table outside if you want to chat. Having said that, overall the experience is pretty good and the food is tasty! The place always seems packed when we drive past. We did go on a weekend and turned up early (5.45pm) to get a table though I think within 20 minutes the whole place was full already so take that into account with your plans.

From the likes of Brooklyn Beer to MOA and BrewFist and the largest range of SA brews like Brew Boys, Birbecks, Steam Exchange and Goodieson (seriously no one stocks Goodieson except Goodieson) these guys must be on some kind of black market, underground trading scheme to have such variety. They run tasting events from Thursday to Sunday (which I'm going to have to schedule in). They also have a fortnightly rotating tap for filling your growler. Yep, that's right you can get your growler sterilised and filled to the brim of a beer you won't normally be able to get by the bottle. You heard me! A range of boutique, small batch SA wine makers and some interesting bottles from overseas are also available. They also have my favourite KIS Gin in stock. All in all this is the melting pot for high end, premium and rare alcoholic finds.

Boasting an excellent array of wines, beers, ciders and a decent spirit selection, Goodwood cellars has the who's-who of wine in South Australia with the heavy hitters and small wineries and brewers on feature. I'm more of a wine drinker myself so my knowledge of the beer selection and ability to comment on it is somewhat redundant (but other reviewers rave, so go read there opinions!). Small wineries that had previously given me the impression of only having a cellar door for sales are prone to appearing for a limited run in store, but I enjoy this as it lets me vary up my local wine knowledge. Prices are very reasonable with monthly specials in all the major categories letting you explore the finer side of the palate without breaking the budget and favourites staying at a consistent price. The best part of this bottle shop has to be the service. The team here definitely know what they're talking about and are always willing to help. Looking for something for yourself? Tell them your preferences and they'll hunt it down (white, crisp, riesling, not sweet, about $20). Looking for a present? They'll find something to suit and impress and will keep your budget in mind (without making you feel like a cheapskate!). And if you have something specific in mind, they'll take you straight to it, saving you from wandering direction-less in those overly large bottle stores popular of late. Only down side is that the spirit section isn't overly large, so don't do what I've done before and drop into pick up Dad's favourite only to find it out of stock on Fathers' Day. That would be an ill-considered move. Oh and its an independent! So feel good about not fueling the coorporate greed whilst downing a hearty red. Nice.
