The technique is high-level but the instruction is clear and suitable for all levels. The mat space is huge and very clean. The facilities and changing rooms are also well maintained. Overall, it's a really nice gym! Since I was in town for work, I just wanted to get a few good rolls in but not go super hard. Without having to say anything, everyone that I rolled with matched my energy and I was really able to get the training that I was looking for. I visited Red Schafer MMA about a half dozen times for grappling classes (both gi and no-gi) and…read morealways learned a lot; Red Schafer is an amazing technician and also really great at explaining techniques and giving feedback when they're not working. The gym is pretty chill without a lot of the ego and drama and bullshit that follows some BJJ gyms around. :) Plus it's really amazing to train with Red because he's SUCH a good grappler. Some black belts are weird about visitors (or people asking them to roll versus vice versa) but Red is totally cool about working with anyone, giving feedback, etc.

The instructor, Sensei Michael Coleman, is a fantastic teacher. He is patient and his years of wisdom are quickly revealed as your work through techniques that help you defend your mind and body. Not only can you learn unarmed techniques, but you can also attend the weapons class as well as the chinese martial arts. Which may be a little confusing because we primarily learn Japanese martial arts, but there is a history that one of our Grandmasters was honored with learning and sharing these techniques that have been incorporated and allowed to be taught at our dojo. When it comes to martial arts and self-defense, I think this is a fantastic place to learn and something you should check out!
