We decided to do the Kinder Prep Camp after having done the Friendship Club, and were very…read moredisappointed with the lack of compassion and accommodation for our anxious 5-year-old compared to all the other regular camps we did this summer. We received a call within an hour of him being at the camp that he was stressed and overstimulated and didn't want to participate, so he was going to need extra support to stay. This was shocking to me considering how little time he had been there, that the point of it was to help kids adjust to kindergarten, and that their ratio was 2 adults to 7 kids. They told me that he consistently improved over the course of the first day and further improved on the second day, but that it would be too costly to keep another adult there to help him. It was sad for us because he left on a high note, telling me that he'd made a friend and that he had done a better job staying in the group. He clearly felt like a success and I wish he'd been given the opportunity to continue improving, but I didn't want him to stay at a camp where the facilitators believed that he was too much for them. He successfully did a year of TK last year and several other camps this summer, some with a ratio of 1 adult to 16 kids. CSC was polite to me and pro-rated me the other days, but it was upsetting because I assumed the most expensive camp I signed up for this summer (held at a therapy location) would be the greatest success, not the one camp that had to call me about an issue. This camp may work out for kids who are already very familiar with their gym environment and don't really need that much help when they feel anxious, but if you're looking for something that will help your child if they struggle in a new environment, this does not seem like the best choice. Some camps that worked well for us this summer were Pedalheads, Compass Clinic's Friendship Island Camp, Campbell Hall's Creative Arts Camp, and Destination Science.

Our son started at LAIPT with some sensory concerns and gross motor and motor planning delays, but has transformed since starting therapy. He has much better regulation, attention span, and body strength, and his motor planning has improved tremendously - I no longer worry he's going to run into walls or fall off things. All of this improvement we owe to our wonderful team at LAIPT. Maxine is also wonderful and works with us to make sure everything fits into our kiddos busy therapy schedule. The space is wonderful as well - very clean, and each therapy room is spacious and filled with so much great equipment and toys. The PT space is a literal gym and our son loves going there because it's basically a playground for him.

They've made such a positive impact on both of my sons and our whole family. Miss Katie (our OT and the clinic manager) is not only caring and patient but also extremely knowledgeable and professional. One of my sons has high sensitivity to smells and used to vomit a lot. After working with Miss Katie for just half a year, his vomiting has improved significantly--the frequency is much lower because he's learned strategies to avoid situations that trigger him. Katie always goes above and beyond to support each of my boys' unique needs, whether it's fine motor skills or sensory exploration. She communicates clearly, provides us with helpful home strategies, and even brings snacks sometimes to make the boys feel comfortable. My kids have grown so much under her care, and they absolutely adore her. Miss Tawny (clinic supervisor) is also the best. She keeps everything running smoothly--always on top of paperwork, scheduling, and last-minute changes. She goes out of her way to accommodate us, which is such a relief since I'm juggling OT and speech for two kids. She makes the logistics stress-free so I can focus on the boys' progress. Together, Miss Katie and Miss Tawny make the clinic feel like family. My boys are always excited to go, which makes therapy not only effective but also fun. We feel incredibly lucky to have them for our OT journey!

The therapists are happy to communicate and collaborate with us as well as our son's other therapists and teachers. This has created an environment that has allowed our children to make substantial progress. Where other therapists (or teachers or educational administrators) have pressured us to lower expectations of our children, the professionals at Douglass Speech work to ensure that our kids are able to meet and surpass their goals. Our son's speech and language delays still need help, but I cannot imagine he would have been able to progress as far as he has were it not for the work being done with Douglass Speech.

And it took another month to get an appointment for the initial assessment for my son. Then once the assessment was done it took another month to get an appointment to start to receive speech! when you arrive there there's no front office or or reception or anyone to speak to. When you arrive at their offices, there's no one there to receive you. You just have to walk into room and a speech therapist who happens to be walking by will let another speech Therapist know you're available. and schedulers work from home or remotely so it's impossible to get in touch with them through a regular phone line and texting them is a big joke as well. I honestly don't know what's going on there. I assume that maybe they were going out of business and everything was falling apart. I couldn't tolerate working like this with my son speech therapy at stake so after six months of playing phone tag and texting we finally gave up and found another therapist.

So I've tried quite a few therapists and interventions and it wasn't until working with the…read morewonderful people at Dr. Kate Truitt & Associates that I really felt that emotional healing was possible and that I could start to see the light at the end of the tunnel following decades long depression. Havening techniques and other techniques have helped me (someone who defaults to over-intellectualizing) get out of my head and into my body which I've found is imperative for healing emotional trauma. With all that said I'm really here to share my experience with the Neurofeedback training done with Rebecca Turner. Having done so much healing and reprocessing through talk therapy, I still felt that my thought patterns were like a hose turned all the way up, whipping around, unable to catch, and control, soaking everyone around me. The initial brain mapping (which is done first to know what areas of the brain to target for training) reflected with tangible data what I was experiencing inside. Ms. Turner described it to me like "your two hemispheres are yelling at each other" which turned out to be one of the most validating things my brain has ever heard about itself. The neurofeedback training process itself is not as complicated and/or intimidating as the name sounds. If one is doing eyes open training, you essentially attach some small sensors to your head using a conductive goop and watch a tv show while the screen brightens and dims in response to the information collected by the sensors and neurofeedback program. For "eyes closed" training, you listen to lyric-less music while the music adjusts the volume to help train your brain. And it all works. I feel good about myself. Shame is now a passing emotion instead of a state of being. Rumination is down ten-fold as my hemispheres aren't "yelling at each other". My thoughts and feelings don't control me as much and/or send my on a downward spiral. If you are someone who feels your emotions are often become too much for you to handle that even standard therapy couldn't alone help, might I suggest neurofeedback?
