Do Not Bring Your Loved Ones to Whisper Woods of Smithtown…read more Choosing an assisted living facility for a parent is not just a logistical decision...it's an act of love, trust, and heartbreak all at once. You're entrusting someone else to care for the person who once cared for you. You're placing their dignity, safety, and happiness into the hands of strangers, hoping they will be treated with the respect every human being deserves. We made that choice. We placed our faith in Whisper Woods of Smithtown. And they shattered it. When my mother entered Whisper Woods, she was mentally sharp, socially vibrant, and full of life. She made friends. She laughed. She was the first to show up for bingo, and she never missed an arts and crafts session. She brought light into that building. Then, without warning, without discussion, and without a single medical evaluation, Whisper Woods forcibly removed her from her community and locked her into a dementia unit. No consent. No explanation. No inclusion of the family who had stood by her side for over six years. We were stunned. She was not confused. She was not cognitively impaired. She was not lost. And yet they treated her like she was. We sought outside opinions...three to be exact. Each expert, without hesitation, confirmed the same truth: my mother did not belong in a dementia unit. And so, we moved her. We found a new facility that saw her for who she truly is: a fully competent, independent, intelligent woman. Today, she is thriving once more free to wheel around in her wheelchair, to laugh and to make friends again. But the damage Whisper Woods inflicted still haunts us and her...an 86 year old woman who worked all her life to be treated with respect. When she was first relocated within Whisper Woods' building, they promised she could continue seeing her longtime friends upstairs. That promise lasted barely a moment. When her friends asked if she liked her new unit and she replied honestly, "No," Whisper Woods retaliated. They banned her from leaving the floor. For telling the truth. For having feelings. And then, they came after our family. I, her daughter, was told I could only visit her in her room. No outings and no shared spaces. If another family member came to visit, we were confined together isolated, boxed in, as if we had done something wrong. Even more shocking, they would not allow me to take my mother out of the building...not for doctors' appointments, not for lunch, not even for family events. Her world shrank to a single hallway. She told me through tears: "I feel like I'm in jail." The staff became so disengaged from her care, so distant from the reality of who she was, that nurses claimed they didn't even know she could speak. This wasn't care. This was imprisonment. This wasn't oversight. This was a complete failure of humanity. We have filed a formal report with the Department of Health, not just for our own peace but to protect others from this kind of trauma. What Whisper Woods did was not only unethical. It may very well have been unlawful. Please, if you are reading this learn from our pain. No family should be forced to watch their loved one fade because a facility refuses to listen. No one should be silenced for speaking up. No elderly woman should be punished for telling her truth. Whisper Woods of Smithtown did not just fail to protect my mother they stripped her of her identity, her agency, and her dignity. I urge you with everything in me: do not place your loved ones in this facility. They deserve better.

She started recently attending this program almost 2 months ago after leaving rehab. She attends 5 days a week and will always share stories with me every day of what she's done and what she enjoyed. It brings me great comfort to know that she is in a safe, caring, supportive, & engaging environment when I'm at work. I am always communicating with the staff about her schedule, because of appointments or if something is going on with my mom. All the staff are really pleasant and helpful in so many ways. She is starting to make friends which is great for the social butterfly that she is. I did look at other social model day programs and there is nothing else that came close to a quality that the town of Huntington adult daycare program provides. The hours of operation are also amazing. As many places do not start until at least 9 AM. However, with my work schedule that is not doable so I'm very appreciative that they start at 8 AM and they end by 4pm. I am really happy that she is in such a great environment and gets to do things that she may not be able to do otherwise. I'm looking forward to her celebrating her 90th birthday with her new friends.

We contacted Home Care Assistance who came and met with us to assess the level of care required and to find a caregiver with the required skill set to appropriately take care of my mother. They found 2 caregivers within a day and reviewed their qualifications and experience with us. We requested an interview with one of the caregivers which was immediately set up. After selecting the caregiver, our Client Manager accompanied her on the first day and stayed a while to ensure a smooth transition. Our Client Manager keeps in contact with us regularly to make sure things are going well and if there is anything additional she and the team can do to assist. It's hard enough deciding it's time to get a loved one some help, so choosing a home care provider is a very important decision. We are very happy with the care and interest Home Care Assistance staff and personnel have supplied with the care of my mother. In a fast moving world with numerous responsibilities to attend to daily, it's very comforting to know that there is someone there taking good care of my mother and to ensure she has everything she needs. In addition to finding qualified help, it was very reassuring to discover the honesty of our caregiver as well. With my mother's dementia and confusion that comes with it, she paid her caregiver $50 cash her first day. The caregiver brought it to my attention and handed me the money. I was so grateful for her honesty as many people these days could have easily kept it.

Dr. Jason Ford was largely absent, leaving critical decisions to a nurse practitioner, Jared Newman, while I struggled to get answers for over a month. When my father was finally hospitalized, he had advanced sepsis, pneumonia, and a UTI, all conditions that were missed due entirely to Dr. Ford and NP Newman's neglect and indifference. He died the same day. This was a devastating failure of care, communication, and accountability. Instead of a physical examination, tests such as an EKG and chest X-ray were ordered. Yet I was forced to chase down results myself. I repeatedly expressed my concerns and explicitly requested that Dr. Ford evaluate him. Those requests were dismissed. I was told by Dr. Ford's office to wait until Dr. Ford was physically present at the facility to speak with him, days later and only during a narrow window before he left at 1 p.m. This level of inaccessibility and lack of urgency is, in my opinion, entirely unacceptable in a medical setting, particularly when dealing with a vulnerable, elderly patient with known congestive heart failure. Sylvia Henderson, the Director of Wellness at the Bristal, did not intervene or take any responsibility to check on my father's condition. He continued to deteriorate over the course of a month. (Interestingly, two positive Google reviews of Sylvia were written by her own family members shortly after his passing.) It is difficult to put into words the frustration, grief, and anger that comes from knowing that his painful deterioration and death may have been preventable or alleviated with more attentive, responsive, and physician-led care. I do not write this lightly. I write this because no family should have to beg for a doctor to see their loved one, only to have their concerns minimized until it is too late. The director of Bristal, Gina Young, said "this was not her experience with this medical practice." I was left with the distinct impression that my concerns were not taken seriously.
