Dr. Karas is an excellent doctor. He has a very nice bedside manner and makes sure you are fully informed before any procedure, even sending videos that explain the process ahead of time. His staff is similarly caring and all folks here are kind and very good at explaining everything that will happen. I was well-informed of all my options for how to go about the procedure and the procedure itself (an extraction - my first ever) was about as painless as it could possibly be, which is what I was hoping for. I feel very lucky that my dentist referred Dr. Karas to me, and that Yelp once again didn't steer me wrong with the reviews. Please, i beg everyone NOT TO GO HERE. Please beware of their practice: They refused insurance and they will force you to pay whatever amount they tell you to pay. In my case, the front desk blocked my exit to force me to pay for a consultation BEFORE even checking my insurance. This practice is highly highly suspect. Go anywhere but here. I recently had to have a tooth extraction done due to a fracture in the tooth. I was referred to Dr. Karas by my endodontist. The procedure to extract the tooth and do a bone graft so that an implant can be done went unbelievably well. It was an easy procedure with little to no bleeding, no swelling and no pain. I did 24 hours of ibuprofen and never needed the stronger pain medication prescribed. Dr. Karas and all of his office staff were very professional, caring and supportive. Was billed $275 for a short 10 minute consultation which resulted in "just wear your night guard" advice. I don't even mind that advice. The one star is because majority of the bill was for a panoramic image which wasn't covered by insurance because it was already done by another doctor. I was not verbally warned about the image (and consult) not being covered nor did the office even try to contact my referring doctor for the image, which they could've easily done and received before my appointment. I don't appreciate the lack of transparency of the costs nor the lack of effort to minimize extraneous images just to be able to charge more money. I honestly felt like a hostage and felt like I wasn't allowed to leave the room until I signed a paper w the bill. Very strange process that showed what this office was concerned with. Normally, I'm able to go to the front desk and check my bill there. I understand these machines are expensive and it would be optimal for an office to utilize as much as possible, but it's not always in the best interest of the patient to take multiple unnecessary X Ray images, and then be charged egregious amounts for them. The office called me a couple days before the appointment so I could fill in forms and give my insurance info. So there's no reason they couldn't have tried to get a pre-auth with insurance for the images they knew would be done, or call my referring Doctor to see if they had the images already. read more

I had a dental emergency with an abcess extending up to my maxillary sinus. The dentist was able to temporize with antibiotics, but referred me to Dr. Karas for an urgent extraction. I was able to schedule an appointment for a preoperative consultation promptly. The staff were polite and helpful. Paperwork was done ahead of time online, so there was no waiting at the office. After an x-ray, Dr. Karas pointed out the problem and described the treatment. Unfortunately, the only choice for this tooth, which had failed a root canal, was extraction. I expected it to be scheduled later in the week, but Dr. Kara's was able to proceed immediately. He was fast, efficient, and caused minimal discomfort using local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. I was able to drive home. It's not ideal to lose a tooth, but I would recommend Dr. Karas. read more

I'm online trying to find someone to extract my sons wisdom teeth and realized I never wrote a review for Dr. Karas for a tooth extraction he did for me 2 years ago. It was a really bad experience. He pulled the tooth before the novocaine took effect so it was really painful. I was white knuckled and squirming and trying to make noise to let him know. He acted annoyed that I was moving and just kept going. He had the tooth pulled in about a minute. In a big hurry. I won't see him again or send anyone I care about to see him. Just for reference, I have had cavities filled without novocaine so am very good about pain. Also, I got an estimate for a tooth implant that was 3 times what I wound up paying somewhere else. read more

Check your bills carefully! It has taken at least 6 calls, several of which weren't returned, and 3 calls where I spoke to people to even get the information I have and the issue is STILL unresolved. We received a bill for $167 when we were paid in full on the day of surgery. I called and spoke to someone there to inquire about the additional amount. The woman who answered said she was showing that we were charged an additional $400 for TWO MINUTES of anesthesia. I was told it was for two minutes that the IV was in my son's arm but he was not receiving medication. He was sitting in the chair WAITING to have the IV removed but because it was in his arm, they can charge us for 15 minutes of anesthesia. She said she understood why I was concerned and she would talk to Dr Karas and get back to me. Never happened. I made additional calls to get it resolved and as always, another call, another brush off. Saturday, I received another notice of payment due which spurred my memory that I never heard back from the prior call so I left a message with their after hours service requesting a call back. Yesterday, received a call from Melissa. Melissa called straight away in the morning and I appreciated her promptness. I again asked the same questions but she was also unable to answer my questions. I was referred to Stacy in billing. Stacy listened to my concerns but couldn't answer my questions. Stacy told me she was going to leave Dr Karas a note and ask him my specific questions and would get back to me. Instead of doing that, she emailed me a detailed, itemized document showing the anesthesia timeline and breakdown then called me back. She DIDN'T ask the doctor but she did create even more questions. There were 4 1/2 minutes unaccounted for where they billed for that they were not monitoring him and he was not under anesthesia. Stacy could not account for that. Again, I am reading her back the document she sent me, asking pertinent questions regarding the charges and times given on the document SHE PROVIDED. All she kept saying was "I do billing, I'm not a nurse, I'm not back in the procedure room." Instead of taking a moment to step away and going to ask a nurse or the doctor, she kept repeating herself. At this point, I was pretty frustrated because I should be able to get answers from someone who knows and I should be able to have the time justified that they are billing me for. Then Stacy tells me that some practices don't see the value in charging for those couple of minutes but there office does. Well, ya don't say? Streeeeeeeetch the minutes and you can charge $400 for doing nothing and you can't prove they *didn't* provide care but they can't prove they did. Sneaky. Basically, they have over charged my insurance for $400 and I will be filing a claim with my insurance company to look into it. My final remark to Dr Karas' office and his staff is - Stacy, make sure you have fully disconnected the phone line and the call is gone before you decide to make derogatory comments about a patient or a minor patient's parent. I heard you. And it isn't a good look for you nor is it a good look for the practice. read more

Excellent surgeon, crappy front office staff. Was told by staff that my procedure was pre-approved through our insurance. Spent almost 3K and was then informed by the insurance company that they never received all of the pre-approval documentation from Dr. Karas' office. Questioned the billing manager who went back on her earlier assertion that they had received pre-approval by telling me that they never request it....this was lie. I had been specifically told it has been pre-approved. and the insurance company re-confirmed that a half-assed incomplete attempt had been made at pre-approval. The insurance company had requested additional documentation from them that they never supplied. I should have been tipped off any the fact that they charged me 100% of the surgery cost, and said they would refund the remaining 60% once they received payment from the insurance company. Never had a dentist or medical professional do that. The kicker is that they later submitted all of the paper work at my insistence in an effort to get me reimbursed. The insurance company informed me that the documentation they sent did not support their claim that the procedure was medically necessary - which I was informed by staff that it was. I spoke to the department of consumer affairs division that oversees dentists and oral surgeons and they said that the request to pay 100% despite a defined insurance poker was a red flag, as was the fact that they claimed they never seek pre-approval on procedures that may be in question. Again, Dr. Karas is an excellent surgeon - his staff doesn't do him credit. I'd recommend doing business with him only if you do your homework and protect yourself from their misleading billing practices. read more

I came her with a positive attitude. As soon as I got there, Nancy informs me that she doesn't work there so she doesn't know where they keep all the paperwork. Why is she there then? Another lady at the front desk couldn't even help me, she kept handing me off to Nancy. Darci was very nice, she helped me a lot more than Nancy did. Nancy seems to not want to help the patients there. She told me to call my employer to get information about my TOA(table of allowance). Isn't it supposed to be doctor/dentist to insurance? not patient to employer? I mean that's what my insurance reps tell me, that dentists/doctors can easily call the insurance company to find out what the coverage is. Nancy obviously didn't want to do this. She was rude and inconsiderate. Constantly talking over me and not letting me explain anything. Her service definitely reflected on Dr. Karas. I felt like I was doing Nancy's job that day. And she made it seem like I was the problem when I clearly wasn't. I also think she was discriminating me because I'm young. She kept repeating her words like I was stupid and didn't know what I was talking about. I don't recommend coming here. The doctor may have a good rep for his work, but he needs to be aware of how his staff is treating patients and how they're doing their job or what their job is. read more

My teenage son was referred to Dr. Karas at Muir Oral Surgery for removal of all four wisdom teeth.  From the beginning our experience was great.  The office staff was helpful and friendly.  Dr. Karas took all the time needed to explain the surgery, the pros and possible concerns.  The surgery went well.  Recovery was as expected, due to the careful explanations provided beforehand.  I am so happy we were able to have this done thru Muir Oral Surgery.  I can't recommend them enough !! read more

Dr. Karas removed my wisdom teeth and a diseased molar in preparation for radiation therapy. I was referred to him by my primary dentist- she said he was the best! His surgical technique was wonderful and I had no complications. His front office staff was very friendly and they got me in right away since I needed to be healed in time to start radiation by a certain date. I did not give 5 stars because I felt he was often rushed (despite waiting 15-30min for each appointment I had). It seemed he always had one hand on the doorknob every time I saw him. I had to ask about complications pre-op (which he should have gone over standardly) and I had to ask him post-op to explain why he took the extra tooth. He seemed frustrated that I would even ask. His nurse tried to show me how to flush the pockets with a mirror but I couldn't see anything. I asked for someone else to show me and he said it wasn't necessary, just to squirt the syringes back in my mouth near the extraction sites. Nobody called me to ask how I was doing post-op (I passed out on my bathroom floor the night of the surgery). Also he told me pre-op I could work on the Monday after the Friday surgery so I made plans to be at work and then he told my husband after the surgery it was only 50/50 if I could work or not with no explanation. His discharge papers said I could return to a normal diet within a couple of days but I still couldn't by my one week post op visit and he said it would be another 7-10 days before I could. The pre-op paper said I needed a driver so my husband was planning to drop me off and take our baby for a walk while I was in surgery but they said he had to stay. The receptionists realized a crying baby was probably not a good idea in the lobby so they let him go after all. Dr. Karas was 45 min late starting that procedure. Overall, the surgery itself was good but the rest was not. read more

Dr. Karas has a good reputation for oral surgery among the dentists in this area. He is technically proficient and the office is efficient and well run. Having said that, I probably won't go back. I wanted to ask questions before the procedure and that obviously didn't sit well with him. When I asked questions, he basically dismissed my concerns and said "You can always ask for a 2nd opinion". Well i had to wait for 3 weeks to get an appointment with him and was on a time constraint by that point. I appreciate his skill and talent but I want a medical professional who listens when his patient is not comfortable and not one who expects patients to accept his opinion because He is the Doctor. I noticed a large percentage of his patients were geriatric and they are probably more comfortable with his style. read more

I went to Dr. Karas to have a tooth pulled and implant done. I have osteoporosis and have been on Fosomax for two years, which can cause complications. Dr. Karas was extremely cautious ahead of the extraction and implant and afterwards because of the Fosomax. He is a kind, careful and efficient surgeon. His staff, every one of them, is amazing! They made me laugh, kept me comfortable, answered every question and made me feel like family. Having this procedure done isn't discomfort-free. However, I was numbed sufficiently to prevent the pain, and I just used Motrin after each procedure (not a fan of prescription pain meds). I never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to get in. My procedures are now in the past. I hugged them goodbye, because I'm going to miss their kindness! Thank you all! read more

Its a time sensitive matter to get his teeth pulled before he gets his braces, the secretary could care less and refused to let me make an apt. Had an implant that failed (by another doctor) and Dr. Karas tried to repair it but it was too far gone so he had to remove it and do a bone graft. I now have to wait 4 months for the graft to take and then another implant. Not fun but Dr. Karas was not only very professional but did everything to make the procedure as painless as possible. I was writing a few yelp reviews today and realized I've never reviewed Dr. Karas. My treatment is ongoing, but I can't say enough great things thus far so I think it deserves a review :) I presented to Dr. Karas with a pretty complicated case with a lot of history. I was told I needed jaw surgery all of my life and finally jumped in and got braces and jaw surgery in 2013-2014 with Kaiser Oakland. Both my orthodontic and surgical work were done terribly wrong, and left me in a much worse position than what I started with prior to any treatment. I was left to find a whole new team to revise my entire treatment, and now I was a very complicated and difficult case. I consulted with multiple maxfac surgeons, including some of the biggest names in the business. Multiple professionals in the area recommended Dr. Karas to me. He was my last consult out of the surgeons I saw, and I knew from the moment I left the appointment that I wanted him to do my revision surgery. The care from Dr. Karas (as well as my new orthodontist working with him) has just been night and day in comparison to the care I received during my first jaw surgery experience. From the consult on everything has just been incredible. He has gone above and beyond to work with me to not only help me on a path to fix what was wrong, but he also did research to try to piece together pieces of the puzzle of what went wrong in my first surgery after the first surgeon abandoned me with no answers. And after that experience, he's also been incredibly caring and goes out of his way to make sure I am fully informed and involved in my re-treatment. Not only did he step up and take an incredibly difficult surgical case, but he also committed to dealing with the natural skepticism and anxiety I had stemming from my first surgical experience. My case required a little more in depth planning with additional doctors such as my prosthodontist, and he went above and beyond to make sure all options were explored for my case. I had no plans shown to me for my first surgery. In preparation for my revision, Dr. Karas uses new technology to do the best 3D scans and modeling for your case. He walked me through all of the proposed movements, anticipated results, and thoroughly covered all of the risks. Again, night and day compared to my first experience. The surgical experience was great at Aspen/John Muir. All of the staff there had nothing but great things to say to me about Dr. Karas, and they obviously enjoy working with him there. My post op care has been amazing thus far. I only saw my surgeon once the first month post op after my original surgery. Dr. Karas has been super involved, seeing me the day after surgery, then five days, 10 days, and 3 weeks post op; taking a good look at everything and making sure everything is as it should be after all of the hard work. Very comforting this time around knowing I am being checked and in good hands! I've had the unique experience of having jaw surgery twice. I've seen what good care is like vs. ....well, not so great care. Do your research and get a great surgeon. A surgeon that uses the newest technology, will devote the time to your case, has the extensive experience to tackle even the toughest problems, and genuinely cares about his work and his patients. I can't recommend Dr. Karas enough. He didn't have to step up to the plate and take on a case like mine. He did, and his work continues to exceed my expectations. Dr. Karas and his staff are fabulous! Everyone is friendly and efficient. The office is well equipped and clean. Dr. Karas did an extraction and implant for me, took out my daughter's wisdom teeth, and did extensive work on my son (including taking out wisdom teeth and doing a very complicated implant on a front tooth that involved gum and bone grafting). Everything went well with all of the surgeries. He is so relaxed and skilled that I only needed a local anesthetic for my procedures. I have complete trust in this doctor. He is very professional but he is also personable and a really nice guy. I would highly recommend this office and will most definitely return if anyone in the family needs further oral surgery (but let's hope not!). read more

Just had a second implant done. Dr. Karas was professional and explained the procedure in advanced. Surgery was quick and went without a hitch (just wish insurance would have covered some of it.) Front office staff was professional, albeit not the most friendly, but worked with me on FSA and other insurance questions. Dental Assistants were great and professional. Highly recommend Dr. Karas, in the world of implants you get what you pay for. He is a board certified surgeon and knowing he is there for any problems is the difference. I would NEVER go to any type of Clear Choice clinic. It may start out cheaper, but not if there are complications. read more

I recently went to Dr Karas to get a second opinion regarding the removal of an ondodontic karatocyst (a cyst in my jaw bone.) I had seen another oral surgeon and his prognosis was grim to say the least. I was informed that I would be losing approximately 1 inch of my jaw bone and rear molar #31 and most likely have permanent numbness on my lower lip. The doctor matter-of-factly told me this just before saying that he didn't even want to do the procedure and that he would be sending me to UCSF to let some student work on me. I was beside myself when we walked out of his office, that's when my better half turned to me and said "I didn't like anything he had to say! We're going across the street and give your x-rays to Dr Karas." Dr Karas, in my humble opinion, is the best there is here in the Diablo Valley. Not only is he a maxillofacial surgeon, he is an MD, general surgeon and plastic surgeon as well. His bedside manner was far and above that of my first consultation. He first put my mind at ease telling me that we had options. As he specializes in difficult cases, mine wasn't particularly difficult for him. Dr Karas, although he must have spent most of my life in school, is priced about the same as the other guys out there, but makes his living out of going the extra mile and getting the best possible results for the patient out of some rather bleak situations. Dr Karas was able to remove the cyst from my jaw without removing any teeth and the numbness is just about gone two and a half months after my procedure. I would recommend him to everyone in the market for an oral surgeon. read more
