Rice Park is another one of those things, with its pretty twinkling lights... and the majestic Landmark Center backdrop doesn't hurt either. Together, WinterSkate comes to life as an outdoor rink right in the middle of St. Paul. This year, it's open from Nov. 26 to Feb. 5. They have a warming house for changing your skates and staying cozy. The rink itself isn't huge, but I basically just need room to lurch around like a Frankenstein and then fall... so I'm good. Best part aside from the fact that you have an instant date-night? Skate rentals are only $2 and the rink itself is FREE. So what are you waiting for? Oh yeah, winter has to come first. A perfect holiday night. Rice park is the perfect strolling park when you're on a date at the Ordway, Riverwalk Center, Xcel Center, or anywhere else in downtown St Paul. The skating rink also makes it a great stand-alone family destination in the winter from November (when the rink opens) to the new year when Rice Park hosts the annual Ice Castle.

You will find trash/recycling and a dog poop station there as well. On one side of the park is a place for sports, with a baseball diamond and a half court basketball. On the other side is a playground featuring many fun pieces of equipment, including slides, swings, climbing wall, balance steps, a spinner, and my favorite, a spinning orb you climb inside. Very dizzying lol! If you proceed further down the path to the south and cross over the residential road, the park does continue a little ways further to a neighborhood lake. This part of the path is unpaved dirt. No restrooms or water fountain available here, so come prepared!

It is much nicer & much bigger than I was expecting. You have to keep in mind that this dog park is located right in the middle of the city. The area surrounding the park is mixed residential/industrial with train tracks running along the back part of the park. The park itself is really nice! Unlike most dog parks, this one has a lot of grass! It feels like a big open prairie! My dogs really seemed to love how wide open it is + every surface wasn't piled high with wood chips (which seem to hurt their paws a bit). There are tons of water dishes around to use & like most dog parks, it's best to bring water for your own dog/s + some to share. There were balls available (although none of my dogs play fetch). Benches + chairs to sit in. The fence was high enough to keep my rather large Foxhound inside (he's quite an escape artist - so good/high fences are important to me). Poop bags are supplied + there is a garbage can located inside the park... I just really liked this park...and I will definitely be going back here with my pups...

There is an area for smaller dogs and a separate area for larger dogs, both to run around and play with other pooches! There are doggie bags at the entrance of the park and trash cans along the park walkways. There is also a shared built-in water bowl at the front of the park as well. We bring our family dogs here to get energy out and since everything is fenced in, we feel very comfortable letting them run around off-leash as they are also very good with other people and dogs.

The two courts are relatively decent and usually not busy. I would like to continue playing there, so none of you should read this review and start playing there and taking up my court time... is that clear?! There's also a small playground for the kids and lots of green space. The last time I was there with my friend, we also experienced the added bonus of witnessing some tween drama between a group of 12-year old girls vs. a group of 12-year old boys. Two of them literally went behind the baseboard and had (what I hope, at their age) was their first kiss. And then I think the girl ran off crying, so clearly he wasn't "the one."
