Jola is great. In May I needed a pedicure for sandals, my big toes had a fungus and were gross. Jola spent additional time working on them. I have gone back two more times and now I can go without polish. She gives the best pedicure. Also the no chip polish is great. I would describe the salon experience I had as mediocre. I don't have any serious complaints, but also don't have much to rave about. I received a decent hair cut, but have thought about going back to get it altered and fixed up a bit because the bangs didn't turn out exactly like I had hoped for. The only thing I am pretty disappointed about is the price. I was a first-time client and paid full price. When I left, they handed me a business card that said 40% off for first-time clients. Nobody mentioned this discount to me when I initially booked the appointment, so I feel that I missed that opportunity. MANICURE PEDICURES SERVICE: Jola does the best manicure pedicures I have ever had. I started doing the no chip with her a few years back after damaging my nails trying to do acrylics my self. JOLA's advice and skills over the years has been unlike anywhere I have ever been. My nails are healthy and strong. People can't believe that they are my own nails. I am a creative, hands on hard working person and I put my hands through the mill. My nails are put to the test nearly every day, by being in everything from the dirt to a paint can. My experience: 1. Lady at the front, long blonde hair, mature, gave smarmy attitude. Someone else posted the same thing. She "scolded" me. If not for customers you wouldn't get paid, lady. I have bosses, don't need another! 2. The person who cut my hair asked one question after another. What's your job? (none of your business--might as well ask: "How much money do you make?"). Their site posts "Women's cuts from $35" I paid almost DOUBLE that and my hair is only shoulder-length. Did not realize this till after I left and checked their site, DOH! 3. We are there for services, not to be asked what we are doing this weekend, if we have kids, or to be your buddy when we don't know you. Most EVERY stylist does this...sorry but it's like a broken record. If anything, bring up a current topic but don't pummel clients with 1 question after another. When you get "yes/no" answers pick up on it. Pay attention and you can tell if your client wants to chat or quietly relax. 4. Finally the good news. My hair turned out nice! They took the time to examine my hair first and discuss. Tho I did not get what I ASKED for and nervously watched the hair fall with no clue of the outcome, it turned out looking great! I guess this time the stylist knew better than I what was best. If the lady at the front hadn't been snappy, the stylist hadn't asked so many "nosey" questions and I hadn't later seen on their site that women's cuts are "from $35" but paid way more, this review would be 4 or 5 stars. Well, I'm a fan mostly of my stylist Melissa. She is a young Mom with varying hours but she is fabulous and spends the time to get everything just right (I got for cut and style) and she is also creatively talented! She used to teach and has traveled nationwide in contests, etc. I also love her personality, spunky and fun but not "over the top." My relationship with the salon is mostly through Melissa (my adult daughter goes to Melissa also for cuts and color) but I can add that the salon is clean and accessible...haven't had any parking issues, etc. Right on Slade St. in downtown Palatine. read more

Wow, had an appointment this morning at 10:15, they just called me a half hour before I was supposed to go in saying that my stylist "burned her hand last night" but not at the salon "somewhere else". I proceed to ask if there is anyway I can get my hair done by anyone else for a cut and color, the drowsy receptionist said alotta mehhh and sighs saying umm sorry theres no one that could do that for you today....how about monday.....listen ppl I work a full time job like most of you, I woke up EARLY on MY day off, excited to get my hair done. Then she said oh wait we cant do monday how about thursday? Like really, it's saturday and I really wanted my hair done for the weekend, so I just said Ill call back another time because I was so angry. The way she spoke to me was very rude and she did not understand why I was upset. Also she did not offer any discount of any sort. To be honest I reallly dont think the styest "burned her hand" just because she was s vague and didn't give me any furthur details when asked. I really want to sell my groupon and find another place. I came here because I found a deal on Groupon for a facial. I called the salon Friday 12/18 at 10:01am to schedule my facial for Saturday 12/19 and they told me they had 10:45am available which was great so I made the appointment for Saturday. I arrive at the salon Saturday morning at 10:35am (10 min. before my scheduled appt). The salon itself is very nice and clean. I walked up to the receptionists who are not very welcoming to check-in and then had a seat in their seating area. I'm waiting, waiting, waiting...then after 25..yes 25 minutes AFTER my scheduled appt. I ask the receptionist how much longer. Instead of the receptionist noticing I've been sitting there for 25min and walking up to me and apologizing and try to explain to me I had to be the one to walk up and ask. She says they've been trying to reach the lady who does the facials on the phone because she was not even in the building! They said she left and said she would be back but never came back for me. I asked if I could reschedule my appt because at this point its been 30 min. but the facial lady has not other available dates that fit my schedule. So I said I would wait 10 more min. then I'm leaving. Well, I waited 15 min. and finally the lady walks in and takes me back. Now, Claudia is the name of the facial lady and she is SO nice and wonderful. She apologized a hundred times and explained to me that the receptionists booked me for the wrong day!!! Instead of the receptionists taking responsibility for their mistake they put the blame on Claudia! Anyways, Claudia did a fantastic job and the chemical peel was amazing. My skin is glowing! She did it perfectly and took her time doing it, she did not rush at all. The prices are VERY fair for the great services she provides. The salon did try to offer me a free haircut for the mistake which was nice but I told them I already have a stylist and I don't see anyone else. Then the receptionist makes a snarky remarks saying "Well, just so you know our stylists are very good"....okay what does that mean to me? I just told you I already have a stylists and i'm not here for my hair I'm here for a facial!! I will be back but only to see Claudia. She was wonderful! But not looking forward to having to deal with these receptionists. I will be contacting Claudia directly instead of the salon. read more

The salon is very clean and tidy. My stylist Kim is sweet wonderful and can do some good hair. I usually have no problems but today I had to bite my tongue. Kim and I were talking and another stylist added her opinion on a fellow employee (which wasn't nice). I didn't ask for opinion and she seemed malicious and mean. Someone needs to tell her that talking about your fellow employees in front of other clients is tacky and unprofessional. read more

My first experience here was fabulous. A friend had recommended them and I loved the cut. The second time I went the same stylist wasn't available and my need (ok, really a 'want' but you know how that goes) to get a cut ASAP prompted me to say they could schedule me with whoever was available. I figured it was just a trim, she just had to follow what was already there, right? I had never cried over a bad haircut. My hair grows fast and I just say "it's only hair" - but this time that wasn't cutting it (no pun intended). The second gal butchered my hair. It was like a mushroom. Totally different style; not even close to what I came in with. I was in tears by the time I got home. I called right away to schedule a fix with someone else, and was scheduled with a third person who I have been going to faithfully for the last 4 years (so there is a happy ending after all). I like the 'vibe' of the place and the energy there. I'm going in for a free bang trim tonight. And my stylist has never been rude or seemed rushed with me. Don't count them out yet; I definitely suggest giving them a try, just be specific with what kind of cut you're looking for (modern vs. more traditional) and the receptionist will have an easier time paring you up with a stylist. read more

While some of the things said about the atmosphere here may be true, it is a bit strange, I come here for a haircut - not a social outing. Having said that, in my whole life I have never had such as amazing haircut ( and I have been through COUNTLESS stylists) as the one given by Nelson (the stylist himself). I came here with a groupon, and while the 40 minute drive from the city sucks, and I never thought I would pay $70 for a cut, I'm back here every 2 months. I found a Groupon for a haircut for this salon online, and decided to give it a try. I was booked with Kim, and she did a fabulous job! I am usually very picky about my hair, and often times hate my cut before I even leave the salon (I have thick, long, wavy hair, which a lot of stylists have trouble with) but Kim did an amazing job! Not only was she very personable and friendly, but my hair turned out great. I can honestly say for the first time in a very long time I LOVE my hair. The only negative thing about this salon, was when I checked in, there was another hair dresser with blonde hair sitting at the reception desk, and she was slightly rude, which other people have noted in their reviews. Horrible. Rude staff, especially the front desk and I went there for years and finally had enough of front desk treatment. I did like my stylist Roland, but he lost my repeat business due to the person who works the front desk and anwered the phones. First impressions are everything in a business where you have competition literally across the street, around the corner, etc. If Roland would go elsewhere, I would probably go to him again. Made an appointment to have Nelson cut my 19-year old daughter's hair. We got there on time, checked in at the desk and seated ourselves inside the bay window, because there is no waiting area. We could see Nelson was still cutting someone else, but no one told us how long the wait would be or apologized for any delay. In fact, no one even acknowledged us for 30 minutes. We got up and left. No one said goodbye, or offered to reschedule or even noticed we left. I thought I might get a follow up phone call or apology (since they had my number from when I made the appointment) but never another word. Tried this salon for the first time and will definitely come back. I bought a groupon and unlike other reviews that said they treat you bad if you use a Groupon, they did not. I was impressed that all I had to do was tip. I've used other groupons at salons where they add an additional charge to the Groupon when you're done. Made sure to tip well, I feel guilty and think $15 tip wasn't even enough with how well the stylist did. Kim was awesome! She took her time, listened to what I wanted and did such a good job. She was in no rush, very detailed, and was very friendly. If you're looking for a good place in downtown this is it. I went the first time for the groupon. It is clear the stylists do not like doing "groupon clients." I did not feel like I would be normally treated in an 'upscale' salon. My experience included snooty stylists with bad attitudes that act like you are taking up their time rather than them taking yours, barren shelves with no product to buy, and an all around poor experience that left a bad taste in my mouth. It is also obvious they leave the groupon guests for the newer stylists, so don't expect an exceptional haircut. If this groupon is some desperate attempt to get people in your door, it is a poor job of doing so because I would not even recommend this place to my enemies. read more

I made an appointment for 4/14 approximately 3 days prior after purchasing a Groupon. My stylist was Mark. When I arrived I quickly got into the salon and was placed at a chair. I am a bi-racial female with thicker curls. Nelson took out my ponytail and just looked at my hair. I mentioned I had product on it to which he made a rude comment. He said "I don't think I can do your hair" and stated that he was going to get his daughter. After leaving for approximately 5 minutes, he came back with her. She stated that she could not do my hair but if I wanted to come back in the following day she could fit me in. I asked Nelson what the issue was to which he replied "I don't have time to do your hair." I politely explained that it does not take long to blow out my hair. He reluctantly sent me back to get a wash. He attempted to make small talk but was clearly uncomfortable as was I. He cut my hair and then sent me to his daughter for her to straighten in. As I was leaving, I left a tip, against my better judgement. I politely spoke to him and stated that the way he looked at my hair and treated me made me feel very uncomfortable to which he replied "I don't do ethnic hair." He was unapologetic. I would not recommend this salon to anyone with texture to their hair. read more

Wish that I could have her do my hair every day. If I want to do a change she just glances and the pinterest picture and runs with it. I normally don't write reviews but when someone does a job well beyond any expectations I feel they deserve to be recognized. I came in needing a color correction, color, full highlights and a cut. I spent almost 5 hours at the salon and I had a very pleasant experience. My stylist Kim is truly amazing at her job and knows her craft very well!! I will recommend her to everyone I know. She was so patient with all my questions about the color correction and talked me through each step and explained everything to me in detail. Kim was able to give me exactly the color and highlights I wanted, and I have never been so happy with the way my hair turned out. Got full set of highlights. Unfortunately for me, through Groupon. I figure this will be my last groupon for hair. Stylist didn't ask if anything was on my hair, just went coloring away... and then I had to leave the salon with wet hair -- and I saw other women leaving with dripping wet heads too (this just isn't right). The stylist was like, you can use our blowdryer. Dude, seriously, I don't want to stand around drying my OWN hair in a salon. Charging extra just to dry my hair may be for the ultra high end salons, but this place is NOT high end. I couldn't figure out why they act like the sun rises and sets in the cracks of their you-know-whats when I called and they were like, it's $15 to dry your hair after and the lowest end haircut is another $40. No thanks. I got my highlights (which were darker than I wanted.. I told her I definitely did not want to go darker.. ... here I am, darker. Oh well, fall is around the corner I guess). Last Saturday I got a great haircut by Rosanna. I went from a medium cut to short. I have very thick and fine hair. Rosanna used the razor to thin my hair while still maintaining the look of a bob. The salon is located on a really cute stretch of downtown Palatine, and is very nice, clean, and just an all around pleasant place to be. My appointment was actually with Nelson, and he is everything I champion in a small business owner. He opened his salon 25 years ago - a testament to the quality of service he provides. I LOVE my haircut - it is exactly what I was looking for, even though I find it hard to describe to stylists what it is that I am seeking. My hair is more challenging to cut, since it is incredibly thick, long, and I have a lot of it. He really understands his medium, and cut my hair in a way that makes it look healthy, with the volume where I like it, and has made it so much easier to style (which I love, since I work super early in the morning and historically would just settle for pulling my hair back for the day to save on time.) He knew exactly what my hair needed in order to look great, and he approached the haircut with the confidence of a seasoned veteran of the industry - I had no concerns about what he was doing, and that is a great feeling when you are sitting in that chair! I fully recommend trying the Groupon - you won't find a better value for the service - I wish I had purchased the two haircut option! read more
