Anyway, when I arrived, I went into the visitor's center like one always should when visiting a National Park. One of the Park Rangers started telling me about the property. "Currently you are standing in the Appomattox Court House......absolutely nothing happened in here! The surrender was just a football field's length away at the McLean House." What!? Why is it named after the courthouse then? Anyway, all jokes aside the place is great. As stated, the visitor's center is located inside the old courthouse and has the standard gift shop, museum, and movie theatre. Outside there are several buildings that include a bookstore, a Tavern, The Mclean House and several others. The Mclean House was actually torn down at one point and then rebuilt. The house is set up to look like it did then when Lee surrendered to Grant. While the Mclean house is the main attraction to the park, there are plenty of battlefields, markers and hiking trails around to explore. So why only 4 stars, well name it the Mclean House National Historic Park and I will give it another star.

I had been visiting in Virginia for a long weekend and decided to " swing by". It was a magnificent autumn day, and the crowds were manageable, unlike Gettysburg which is where I reside. The Park Rangers were helpful as were the volunteer docents, and a living historian did a great job of describing the events which had transpired there in April 1865. Much of the tour was self-guided, and some knowledge of history would be helpful to those unfamiliar. With it. There is an app which I'd downloaded which was useful, however my listening to the aforementioned ( I love that word!) book whilst driving g was even better. There are several clean restrooms on the site as well as a small gift shop. There was no food in the Park as far as I could tell. The McLean House where the surrender occurred was taken apart with the idea of reassembling it in DC or other places afterwards, but that never transpired as funding dried up, thus the building parts sat in the elements for many years and acted like a "free Home Depot" until it was put back together aagain, I believe in the 1940's. About one-sixth of the original brbricks remained, however the historic structure was rebuilt on the original foundation utilizing blueprints whish were somehow available . I'm a history lover, thus really enjoyed it. I feel it's important for all Americans to know where we came from, how we became such a great Nation, and how easily we can fall apart. Culture and heritage ought never be cancelled. Go check it out as I did!

Its red brick exterior, domed cupola and classical portico make it one of the most architecturally distinctive courthouses in Virginia. Augusta County itself was formed in 1745 and named for Princess Augusta of Saxe‑Gotha, mother of King George III. The courthouse sits within Staunton's Beverley Historic District, a dense, walkable neighborhood that grew around the original 18th century courthouse site, which has hosted successive county courthouses since 1755, long before modern traffic patterns existed. On a Sunday morning, the area was surprisingly lively, with the nearby pedestrian district full of people enjoying the shops and restaurants. Navigating the one‑way streets while hunting for parking was a bit of a challenge, but once we got situated, the courthouse's imposing facade made the effort worthwhile. Even with the bustle of the neighborhood, the building still commands attention, standing as a reminder of Staunton's long civic history and the county's centuries-old presence in this exact spot. The marker reads, "In 1803, the Virginia General Assembly established Cabellsville one mile west of here on the Old Stage Road, on 25 acres owned by Congressman Samuel Jordan Cabell. The village was platted before Nelson County was formed from Amherst County in 1807, and the new community developed around the first Amherst County courthouse constructed after that county was created in 1761. After the formation of Nelson County, its justices continued to meet periodically in the old building in Cabellsville until a new courthouse was erected on land that James Loving donated in Lovingston." Cabellsville has since officially been renamed Colleen. In 1761, it was the first seat of government of the original Amherst County when the county court first met at Henry Key's home near this central location in the newly-formed county that was divided from the former Albemarle County.
