Sunday morning in Amherst turned out to be the perfect time for a quiet walk around the Amherst County Courthouse. With the streets empty and parking wide open, it was easy to circle the building and even press up against the glass to peek in the entrance. The current courthouse was completed in 1997 in a Modern architectural style. It's a two-story red-brick and concrete structure with a broad east-facing portico supported by four tall white columns rising to a pediment. Behind those columns is a full glass wall that gives the entrance a bright, open look. The north and south wings project slightly from the main block, and the flat roofline keeps the whole building feeling clean and contemporary.
The older courthouse still stands directly attached on the west side. That one dates to 1872, built in a Colonial style with white-painted brick, shutters, a hipped roof, and a cupola. It was remodeled in 1933 and expanded in 1962, but you can still see the original massing and the pedimented west front.
Amherst County itself is named for Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, a colonial governor of Virginia.
