I am very frustrated. I received a call yesterday from my primary care nurse who left a message to call a specific number after fighting through four different which took over 30 minutes. Type of care I go into the facility and the doctor ignored me I am the patient by the way and starts talking to my mom who came to support me and watch my kid. I told the doctor of my pain and expressed several times what was wrong and how I felt the doctor didnt listen. I would not recommend this medical facility or their medical professionals. This was one of the most traumatizing and frustrating hospital experiences I've ever had. I came to UNMC from another Nebraska hospital in emergency liver failure due to a severe reaction to Macrobid. The ER team was outstanding--they listened, responded quickly, and managed my pain with care. Unfortunately, the quality of care went downhill the moment I was admitted. I was told I would likely need gallbladder surgery. Two departments supported this. I'm also diabetic, and my diabetes is very well-managed under a care team outside of UNMC. Initially, two members of the endocrinology team were amazing--they acknowledged how well my diabetes was controlled and respected my regimen. But then I encountered Casey Vlach, a diabetes educator, not a licensed medical provider. She questioned my care plan, made offensive remarks about harming future children (I was not even pregnant), and pressured me to sign paperwork she clearly didn't understand herself. Her behavior was insensitive, unprofessional, and inappropriate. If you are a diabetic patient, I strongly suggest asking for someone else. But the surgical team was the most alarming part of my stay. Despite two departments advocating for a simple gallbladder removal, the surgery team refused to act. To force their hand, I was discharged without any pain medication--even though I had been on several during my stay. Unsurprisingly, I returned to the ER just four hours later in unbearable pain. What should have been a straightforward outpatient procedure turned into 1.5 weeks of unnecessary suffering. Post-op, I developed an infection, and when I showed clear signs of it (white pus, odor, gaping wound), I was told--quote--"That's normal." No, it's not. This hospital advertises "customized care," yet I was ignored, dismissed, and mistreated. I was even kept NPO for an entire week--a dangerous decision for a diabetic--which nearly pushed me into another emergency. I do not recommend having emergency surgery at UNMC, especially if you're diabetic. Their refusal to listen nearly killed me. I'm still recovering--not just physically, but emotionally--from how neglected and dismissed I felt. read more

This is the WORST hospital I have ever had surgery at and I have had surgery at two other hospitals in Omaha. Not only did they put me in a temporary hospital room with a broken bed and a tiny bathroom with no shower, a bathroom so tiny I was unable to get my IV stand inside there with me. The day nurse and the night nurse would take forever to come into my room after I pushed the call button and when they did finally appear they kept saying to me that is ok if I pee on myself because they will clean me up. How disrespectful with no concern for my dignity!!! I had major surgery and the doctor went home for the day after my surgery without putting in my meds order so the nurses would not give me any opioid pain meds only OTC pain meds and I was in a lot of pain that I could not even sleep. I cried and cried all night long. I eventually had a psychotic breakdown so I went from the raggedy hospital room with the broken bed to their psychiatric emergency services unit. The young girls behind the desk at the PES unit were extremely rude because when I kept coming to their counter to tell them I was in pain (remember I had just had major surgery) one of them stood up got in my face and said I was interrupting them charting and if I was in pain then WHERE she yelled?! I was in a psychosis state of mind but I knew they should not have been treating me this way but I could not bring myself to formulate the words to say so. I did not receive ANY pain meds while in their PES unit. My husband finally had to come there and demand that they let me go home. He rescued me! I will NEVER EVER go back here! I was held from fo9d fpr 18 hours. Toe amputation. The danger of asperation while on the operating table is less than .5% after 8 hours. My procedure started at 6 pm. and ended at 7 pm. My husband went to the cath lab. After his procedure it was determined he would spend the night, but he wasn't put in an actual room he stayed in the same room he had been in all day. Which is only the pre/post op room. On top of it they don't allow visitors to stay the night, which really pissed me off. Probably some post covid rule we stuck with. My husband was ok to stay by himself, but I felt sorry for others that had loved ones that probably should or would have like to have there spouse with them. I don't. consider this to be the EXTRAORDINARY CARE they rave about. I myself may need some heart stuff done in future but will be more than happy to travel to the heart hospital in Lincoln where they are more accommodating. I was spoiled by them there and UNMC was no where close to the same level. I will also make sure my father remains with his care in Lincoln as well, as today was an eye opener. He waited for a bed in psych for over 24 hours, was finally assigned a bed, and then the next day his bed was given to someone else and he was sleeping in a chair in the day room! This place is a maze, it's confusing, parking is terrible and the people working at the help desk/admin area are rude and unhelpful. I was told I couldn't get assistance to be directed to the outpatient center because the person at the front desk didn't want her volunteer to have to walk that far. We ended up late to the appointment trying to find it ourselves and had to reschedule and was scolded by the front desk ladies there as well. It's absurd, even someone working there didn't know where the outpatient center was from where they were. You have to take a specific elevator or else you're in the complete wrong building; even the exits are hard to find. Hire helpful people if you're going to make this place a labyrinth. read more

I don't live in Omaha, NE. I actually live in South Sioux City, NE which is about and hour and a half north (driving of course) of Omaha. I go to Sioux City, IA for almost all of my medical needs. My regular doctor and my GI doctor actually sent me to Nebraska Medicine in February of 2018 because they couldn't really do anything more for me and my liver disease. I've been coming to NEMed ever since. The construction around the hospital is frustrating, and my last visit I was sent to 4 different places because that construction was causing issues. But otherwise I love this hospital. The staff is amazing. They always take such good care of me and make sure I'm comfortable. Sometimes I feel like I'm hurrying up to wait around, but that's not always. The place is perfectly clean and restrooms and lounge/waiting areas are abundant. Plenty of places to eat and even convince bodegas. I could probably get some of the procedures I need more locally, but I choose to drive to this hospital. You should, too. read more

If your thing is to have unnecessary, invasive exams in front of 20+ strangers, this is your hospital. If getting a catheter in the early morning when you are able and have used the restroom because nobody reads a chart, you'll love this place. Ditto if you like telling nurses you are in pain and nobody does a damn thing. Quite possibly the worst hospital in the entire Omaha area. I particularly like writing another review, in which they responded that I should contact patient services so they could understand my frustrations. My provider has canceled my appointments 3 times. No other providers can see me at my appointed time. What's worse is you can't call and speak with with the CEOs office. They funnel you through patient relations who never answers the phone. Yet if you were a VIP they wouldn't cancel your appointment and give you your private nurse to escort you through the hospital. Multiple very bad experiences. After a bad surgery on my wife that took dozens of surgeries to fix and repair and 2 years later she is still not healed right and we went in for a common historectomy, we stopped going and travel farther now instead. About 5 small nurses swang her on a sheet into the bed after her surgery and she landed like a sack of potatoes and yelped out very loud. Really bad experience with the family medicine department here, and the schedulers. The schedulers told me I could get two things taken care of with one visit to family medicine, despite me questioning whether they did either thing at that office. They said it was fine. Waited two weeks for the appointment, and sure enough they had to refer me out for BOTH things because they said they didn't do either of those things in that department. The doctor was condescending and rude, and then UNMC CHARGED me $200, after insurance, for the visit, because I had 'established' care, even though I have no desire to ever return to that physician or office. Patient relations would not remove the charge because they claim I established care. TL:DR, they charged me for a visit where they could not provide either of the services I was seeking, despite THEIR scheduling team sending me to that office. read more

This is for the Bellevue location, but its for the same system. Dishonest billing practices. I received my initial bill for 161.00 after insurance and made a payment of it of 50. Should be a balance of $111.00 right? In my next statement, I now have a balance of 185 with the $50.00 payment applied. I called to inquire why my balance is higher even with an additional payment and Carson told me that they had to add an additional "facility fee" on this statement. Why wasn't this on the initial statement? When I challenged this, he told me this is how it works at every hospital. It's not. I come from the hospital industry and you do not keep tacking on charges like this. I would not recommend them if you want honest billing practices and transparent, or even decent customer service as Carson was unhelpful, impatient and rude. Oh, and the best part. Is after you visit there, they will then send you a mailing from their foundation asking for donation. FFS. My review is based on a couple different experiences. I was in a major accident about 14 months back. Spent time in the Emergency section and ICU. The care I received was superb. It was my first time in a hospital but can say I felt completely secure, cared for, taken care of and comfortable. I was allowed to order food at 4 am. Brought Hot blankets and my family and friends were treated very respectfully also while visiting. I had many follow up's with the orthopedic's, general, and neuro departments and every time the Dr's were prompt and right on time to the schedule. All of my scans and x-rays were fast and everyone was super friendly and helpful. After said event my healthcare high rate deductible was met. I started making appointments with Nebraska Medicine to get other things taken care of. Heartburn, Physicals etc. etc. I have had nothing but great experience from all the Dr's I have seen. Scheduling can be a bit far out like 6-8 weeks for internal medicine however the communication and care is fabulous. I hope no one ever has to be in the Emergency Room or ICU But if you are know you will be taken well care of not just then but with all the follow ups. And also I hope nobody has American Family Insurance because they will just screw you over big time! read more

My brother and grandpa passed away here. One week apart, back in 2012. I'm not sure which Yelp account is active so I'll write for both. Terrible service. They tried to get rid of my brothers visitors/friends wanting to see him when he was on life support. He did end up passing away, as he was brain dead. All his friends wanted to say goodbye, and this was just a nightmare of an experience, as the nurses were so incredibly rude, in my brothers last days. Doctors, are highly rude as well, very unsympathetic towards my parents. He was only 18, placed on life support because of a drunk driver who hit him and ran a red light. Kept trying to persuade my parents that my brother was dead and had no hope, so decided to jab a cotton swab in his eyes, while he laid already lifeless in the bed. Was this necessary? Last but not least, my grandpas stuff went missing. His wallet, long gone and all of his money. They took advantage of him, because he does not speak English. Same with my brothers items and wallets. We know they stole my grandpas wallet, because when my uncle dropped him off here, they made sure he had it on him for proper ID. After he passed away, they said they didn't have it. Well who else would? Beware, if you want your belongings gone. Such as wallet, and money and etc, come here to get treated very rudely! read more

Excellence in care, my ass. I arrived at the hospital at 9:45 pm and waited 15 minutes to get checked in. I am pregnant and had fallen and wanted to make sure the baby was okay. I was initially interviewed for 10 minutes and had vitals taken. Then I was placed in the waiting room for 30 minutes. My name was called and I was put into a room. The nurses here know nothing about discretion. They told me about the gunshot wound victims and stabbing victim. Have they ever heard of "patient confidentiality"?? Bimbos. After an hour an assistant comes in with a nurse and they tell me they are going to do a chest X-ray and check for baby's heartbeat. 30 minutes later they make it back to check for the baby's heartbeat. I advised them that multiples run in the family and that I was not yet aware to be pregnant with more than one baby. I tell them that an ultrasound would be better considering my personal and family history. They ignore my personal and family history and refuse an ultrasound. Idiots. They don't believe in being safe than sorry. Doppler confirms heartbeat... And my chest x-ray is completed. And then the unnecessary waiting really begins. My chest x-ray is reviewed, I find out the results in a matter of 45 minutes. Not too bad. Then I am given a cup to pee in. I suspect I may have a kidney infection when my pee comes out nearly orange. The doctor insists it is contaminated and he needs to do a catheter. He didn't even send the sample to be tested, he just looked at it and told me to have a catheter inserted. I told him no, that was unnecessary, and that I was going to pee in a cup again. He was not too happy about that. Idiot. At this point it is 12:51 am and I am providing my 2nd sample to the RN. She has me put it in the sink in my room and leaves for an hour. They let my pee sit there for an hour before sending it for testing. By 2:50 am was angry and went out to the desk. I told all 10 employees sitting around chatting about shit unrelated to their jobs that if they didn't give me my results and give me discharge papers that I was going to walk out the door. 30 more minutes go by and finally I am brought discharge papers and a prescription for anti-biotics, which I will not take. I will do my own kidney cleanse because anti-biotics have never helped, but made my issues worse in the past. It turns out none of my piss tests were even back after the 90 minutes. Pretty sad for an E.R.. I never got a phone call with pending results either the next day. The hospital was the dirtiest I have ever stepped foot in. There were no security guards and there were women running around screaming and cursing about their loved ones. I didn't feel safe there. The emergency room computer systems are not linked with the main hospital systems, so expect to have to give them information again, if you think you are in their system. My patient room had blood on the floor from someone other than me. The floors looked like they hadn't been properly cleaned and sanitized in a couple of weeks, I kid you not. The chairs had crusty dirt and dust on the frames, so I know for sure nothing is regularly cleaned in there. Disgusting. It is no wonder I am extremely sick now. Like I said, idiots. If Ebola takes off, which I suspect it will, UNMC WILL NOT BE READY. Idiots. read more

so i am the care provider for my 89 year old mother, last september she started having problems with urination, i scheduled an appointment with dr. symons, he canceled 3 diffrent appointments in a row, so i had her see dr. alexander prauk, they did some tests and said no urinary infection. problems persisted so i scheduled another appointment, she seen dr kim, ran tests no infection, problems persist scheduled another appointment seen dr. kim again more tests no infection. here we are nine months later and she is having problems with her bowels, call the urinary dept at unmc and tell them everything from the beginning. urinary department tells me every test she had from nine fucking months ago is positive for a urinary infection, yet not one of them fucking useless assholes prescribed her anything and fucking lied through thier teeth saying no infection, fuck unmc i. getting in touch with a lawyer fucking i competent assholes i wouldn't take my dog to that fucking shit hole read more

Yet again our experience with the UNMC Nebraska Medicine Emergency Room was a waste of time. My husband is a kidney transplant recipient and was instructed by the Transplant Team to go to the ER due to loss of consciousness. We arrived to the ER at 3pm and we were told a note was in his file from the Transplant Team that they were expecting him. The ED was extremely busy and we had to wait over 3 hours for an open bed. Once we were assigned a bed, his vitals were taken and we were informed that the Transplant Team would be coming in to speak with us. Turns out that the Transplant Team was not notified of our admission until 10pm. My husband did not get IV fluids until after 11pm.....5 hours after being admitted....after I became discouraged and complained. The only advice I can give you when going into this ED is get a game plan with the Dr. and Nurse, write it down, and continue to hold them accountable until something gets done! Don't wait for them to come to you because your time is not as valuable as their's. Delegating responsibility is not their strong suit!!! The ball is continuously being dropped and when questioned on the disconnect of communication the blame game is their go to answer! Very disappointed. Transplant Team needs their own ER!!!! read more

I went to the ER because of a possible heart attack. I was admitted but told no rooms were available. They promised to find a bed to bring down so I wouldn't be forced to sleep on a gurney. I was checked at 10 PM and I asked to use the bathroom. I was unhooked from the monitors and pointed to one down a long hall and walked there alone. I returned unescorted to the room. Still only a gurney. I climbed back up and laid down again. No one returned to hook the monitors back up or even check on me for the next 7 hours. I again went to the bathroom around 1 AM. A bed sat in the hall outside the room. It stayed there the rest of the night. The nurses all sat behind the counter staring at their computers and not one of them made contact in any way or asked if I was ok. Some even had their feet propped on the counter, very casual. When I complained I was told there would be an investigation. Shortly thereafter I received a written explanation saying no protocols were violated and everything was handled properly. Thank god I was ok. If ever I am seriously ill I hope it is closer to a hospital with a much higher standard of care. read more

I called my doctor's office, Dr. Audrey Paulman, to get a refill of Ibuprofen as it had been a year since the previous one was written. I was told by the woman who answered that I HAD to schedule an appointment for an annual review before I could get the prescription. I informed her I have a $2500 deductible to meet before my insurance would pay anything and that I could NOT afford a bill that would amount to over $300 for the visit, exam, and "tests" for an annual check up. I was informed that was their "policy" and that since it had been a year since my last check up that I wasn't even considered her patient anymore. I again explained all I wanted was the Ibuprofen and I wasn't asking for pain pills, just those and that I could not afford a huge bill for an annual exam I did NOT need and her response was "That's not our problem". So, what UNMC does is extort money from their patients, you MUST see your Dr. EVERY year in order to remain a patient, and you MUST incurr a bill before they refill any prescriptions for something as simple as Ibuprofane. So , if you do not see your Dr. at least ONCE a year you are screwed for anything. This is flat out extortion. Their add saying they provide "extroadinary care" is a fucking joke. The ONLY thing you are at UNMC and to ANY of those doctors is a cash cow. They could care LESS about their patients, their main concern is getting YOUR money. I do NOT need an annual exam and it should NOT be required to remain a doctors patient. This screams VOLUMES about UNMC's DESPERATE need for money. After all the new buildings they put up they have to get their money some how and this is the way they do it. I can understand if I was constantly wanting some type of narcotic, but I wasn't. I didn't even use the entire prescription throughout the year as I simply am not a pill taker so when I do take one it tends to last a couple of days. Had I known it was REQUIERED to come in every year to take a bullshit exam i DON'T want I would have gotten all of the refills in the years time it was good for. The medical profession has totally gone to shit ESPECIALLY at UNMC where you are NOTHING but a dollar sign. The 5 star ratings on here are a joke and OBVIOUSLY written by staff or others to have NOT had the shitty experience of UNMC. I will be looking at Bergan Mercy for any future medical issues. Trashy hopital, dirty, and idiots for staff. Oh, and the nurses DO openly discuss other patients issues while walking down the hall or taking of whatever in your room while you are there. Went to the Dr with compl of right sided chest pain, I had a heart attack 2 yrs ago, asked for cardiology to be called. The resident refused saying they had it under control. I was given 1 pain pill for my severe pain. When it did not work, big surprise. I had to wait for over 40 min to get a shot. The next morning the resident came in, said it was just a muscle strain and I was to go home. When I told him my pain was not under control, he said there is nothing more we can do for you, you need to go home. I felt like I was kicked out. They ordered me naproxen for my pain which did nothing. The next day when I had to go to my pcp because I was still in excruciating pain. Pay another copay. My pcp took me off the naproxen, because of my heart issues, and ordered me some real pain pills. I was in severe pain for almost 3 days because they refused to order anything besides naproxen, AND refused to listen to the patient. read more

i am a victim of double billing! I went to the doctor because my insurance from the nebaraska medical center dicates. I paid my co-payment at the visit a month later paid the difference. Eleven months later the nebaraska medical center sends me another bill for $156.00 because they coded the bill wrong. I have the letter. I refuse to pay because the two bills have different billing numbers. The hospital is double billing. It gets worst! i work there and they have done this to other employees. This is wrong. They treat their empoyees badly. If you work they, they charge to pay for parking. For me, that was over $500.00 a year. That is equal to a two-week pay check for a full-time employee. The doctors and executives pay nothing to park. They bleed their emplyees of thier earning. They are one of the worst corporations to deal with in the country. read more

The Emergency room is in horrible condition. The rooms were filithy. Bathroom filthy, used bandades on floor, tt paper all over the place, Loud chatting from everyone, but no medical discussions, just yacking!! I arrived 9 AM on Saturday. Nurse Shannon did not give me pain reliever until 5 pm and even then I had to wait another hour for another shot. When SHANNON arrived with the shot, I started tearing up and tears running down my face and she said NOTHING, didn't ASK anything, NO comfortating words or reactions. This nurse was completely uncaring and downright mean. Then shut the door to my room and I sat there alone for over 5 hours without one person checking on me. They couldn't even find me an ink pen to use, when I asked for one. Doctor finally came at 6:30pm told me they needed to take out my gallbladder. Finally taken to room on sixth floor. Then everything was great, nurse's were attenative, care was prompt, they cared, they talked and tried to do everything they could to comfort me. I didn't get to surgery until 1:30 AM BUT it went fine, plus being a Saturday night they had other emergencies. The team was perfect, kind and caring. The emergency room is horrible, nurse mean, dirty place but hospital is wonderful. Maybe someone will work on this read more
