There are about 6 to 8 flavors per day and they all are delicious, well, the ones I have eaten. I know they have to use plastic spoons, so just be careful not to break it before you finish. Of course, you can have it on a cone of your choice, but for me, served in a bowl is the best. Need a few other staples? they probably carry it.

For my daughter's birthday they gave her a box of David's cheese seeds, which tells you everything you need to know about the kind of people they are. They even hooked me up with a Puchu's hat, which I wear proudly. The two brothers who run it are awesome. They're twins, one's always got this huge smile, the other is a little more low key, but both are genuinely good guys who treat people right. They've got a little bit of everything. It's just easy. Hours are what they are, but honestly, these guys show up for the neighborhood and that's what matters. Friendly, reliable, and just solid people. Even as the overall level of gentrification has kept rising, and other places have opened (and then, in many cases, closed), Basic has remained a solid neighborhood staple. Good coffee, nice food... Slightly fancier options than at e.g. a deli, but still laid back and unpretentious. It's just a nice, comfortable neighborhood place. I think that's more or less how it's described in the newspaper review that's framed on the wall between the door and the milk & sugar station. That's from roughly the same time as when I moved here, and I'm not sure but I think there have been a couple different owners since then. But you know, it's still true!
