I just got back into playing after a few years off. My electric needed a setup pretty badly as a result of having been in the case for so long. I took it in with bad intonation issues and buzzing all around the fretboard. These guys fixed it up to playing the next that it ever had. I would highly recommend. Just an FYI, these guys are highly busy and you will likely wait several weeks to be completed. But their work is far superior to anything you will get from a big box music store, and in my opinion worth the wait. read more

I experienced great service and work at NC Guitar Works. The neck on my bass was concave and could not be repaired. The guys and NC Guitar Works were able to replace the neck, make adjustments to the body to support truss rod access, upgrade tuners, and make the string action as low as possible. The bass plays great, looks beautiful and feels a lot more sturdy. Stacy, one the luthiers, was always pleasant and professional when discussing and providing updates on the progress of the work. In fact, everyone I spoke with at NC Guitar Works was pleasant and professional. These luthiers are the real deal in service and work. I definitely recommend them. read more

I have an old ovation guitar that had a large crack on the front. There were a few problems with the pickup as well. The technicians were able to make the crack not noticeable and they did an excellent job of doing a setup on the guitar as well. Very happy with their knowledge and craftsmanship. I watched as they handled other customers before me. Very no nonsense, professional and straightforward on what needs to be done and on how long it would take. read more

I hardly ever leave reviews. I am even more less impressed by the work of others. These guys knocked service, skill and ability out of the park. I am very impressed and pleased with the quality of job they did for me. Had a busted truss rod and the worlds worst action on a Taylor 12 string. Expecting to get a second mortgage to pay for the repair, it turned out to be a very modest priced repair, that I actually felt was way more than I paid for. I didn't get to heat the house with the guitar in the fireplace but rather got to sit by the fireplace and play some great tunes on an awesome setup 12 string. Was absolutely blown away by the quality of work done here. I somewhat knew what to expect when a buddy over at GC referred me here rather than going through their in-house techs. I too brought in the ol' axe in for a setup (initially) and wound up getting a re-fret with stainless and new tuners. Although I managed to get OTD with just the noted services, I really appreciated Nick going out of his way to adjust the bridge, dress up a body blemish, and install a new input jack. Awesome dude. Again, the work overall was impeccable. The guitar has great sustain now and even stays in tune when using the whammy. Great cosmetics. Felt like I was picking up a brand new guitar. Stopped by this place looking for a simple replacement part. They told me they did not keep much inventory in the shop....fair enough. They said they could order one. I explained that is was a dealer and on my way to the Indy guitar show and would probably score one there. All this time these guys seemed oddly uneasy. I asked about some guitars they had hanging on the wall ( im aware they do some consignments) I was basically escorted out of the store and the employee took on a real condesending vibe. I got in my car drove to Indy. Got my pick guard as well as 18 guitars dropping a cool 25K. I can not speak to there repair work but in my 35 years in the guitar biz i have never been treated quite like this. read more

Nick and Stacey are great guys to work with. I recently brought in my 2003 Malden Holly Keyser in so I could have replacement Sperzel tuners installed. They did a great job, and Stacey even plugged and colored the previous tuners' screw holes so that it would look more natural. Many people would not bother to do that (since no one usually spends much time looking at the back of a headstock), so that was a nice touch and shows their attention to detail. He also did some minor tweaking to the truss rod and now this guitar plays effortlessly and in tune all across the fingerboard. I have several other axes that need some TLC, and I will definitely be bringing them back to NC Guitar Works. Highly recommended ! read more

Having moved here from NJ 6 years ago I was getting frustrated trying to find a luthier that met my OCD driven standards. I decided to give NCGW a try and given how they returned my guitars to me I think I've found my guys. I gave them my 2000 Martin D16GT and my 2010 Clapton Strat to work on. Both needed some TLC and they got just that. After picking them up I realized that I had forgotten how well the used to play. They did an amazing job on them and I couldn't be happier. Add to that the fact that they're a pleasure to deal with and you have the best place to get your instruments serviced. I will never take my instruments anywhere else. I took my guitar in to have a K&K acoustic pickup installed. It was done in less than a day and worked perfectly, at a great price. The employees are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I will have some fret work done next month and will take it there as I know they will do a professional job at a very reasonable price. WOW! Seriously, Nick is amazing!!! First things first, I called on a Friday literally the minute they were suppose to open, and he answered the phone (unlike some other music/guitar stores in Charlotte). Nick was super polite and helpful, told me to bring it down to see what he could do. Stopped down at his shop 20 minutes later. I went to take it out of the case to show him what the problems I had were and within literally 2 seconds of me opening the case HE KNEW WHAT STRINGS I HAD ON IT.... not just 80/20 or phosphor but the brand, model, and gauge. Then without even taking it out of the case he knew about the issue I had been having with the neck. Talk about being blown away. Obviously, this is not his first rodeo. He wanted to know what style of music I played, what sound I was looking to get out of it, and different options for strings, since I didn't care for the current strings I put on it. That showed me Nick really wants to give you the absolute best setup for you, not just a generic this is how high/low the action should be, let me change your strings, and send you on your way. I picked up my baby and literally said "Wow!" out loud before I even played it. It played better than when I first got it. Action is perfect now, no buzz, and it stays in tune like a champ. He swapped my saddle, fixed my nut, polished the frets, fixed my tuning pegs, oiled the fretboard, checked my battery, and made sure I didn't pop a brace. I couldn't be happier with the service Nick and his shop provide. Do yourself a favor, don't take your guitar anywhere else to have work done. Compared to local shops, the setup here is slightly more, but a million times more thorough, and worth every penny. You get what you pay for! Bottom line: Nick is a master, and actually has a passion for what he does and it shows in the quality of his work. Top that off with his amazing customer service, and I don't know why you would go anywhere else to get work on your guitar. read more

Nick did an excellent job on my G&L Invader stainless steel re-fret. We put jumbo-jumbo frets on the maple neck and it plays like nothing else I have ever had. I am so happy with the way it turned out. He rounded the fret edges just the way I wanted. I would definitely come back to get a different guitar re-fretted. read more

NC Guitar Works did an amazing job restoring a vintage guitar that my father in law played before he passed away. On a short deadline and with plenty of sentimental attachment, they were able to restore the guitar to display (or play) quality just in time for me to present it to my wife before Christmas.
