I've lived in a lot of places. But I have never found a local bakery as good as this establishment…read more Everything is made on site. I've ordered sandwiches, tried their pizzas, devoured their biscottis, gorged myself with their dessert pastries, etc. But the cheese Danish I got this morning was beyond amazing. The light pastry was filled with a cheese mixture that probably had some ricotta in it. Superb! The store has a variety of pastas, coffees, and other imported Italian goodies. Best of all, the counter folks are courteous, helpful. and friendly. Easy to get to from other parts of the city. The 104 and 90 bus both stop at Upper Lachine and Melrose. You'll see the yellow sign with red lettering.

I've tried flat tomato pizza all over the city for 50 years, and bar none, NDG Bakery has the best!…read more I am so happy that I discovered them in the 80s. If you are in the mood for a sandwich at lunch or anytime, they make every sandwich fresh to order, even slicing the meats and cheeses at assembly time, with whatever condiments you wish, on their "baked in store" soft or crunchy buns or breads. Their sweets counter would rival any of the Italian bakeries in the city. Mima and her staff are friendly and always accommodating. Don't get "shut-out", order your flat red pizza in advance for weekend pickup they sell out early, that also goes for their breads and other baked products.

Visit Shortbread By Gryphon for the best shortbread. Period. Double Period…read more. Peggy has been baking shortbread and crafting a multitude of other delicacies in her Monkland storefront since the early 2000's. Pass by and she'll always greet you with a smile (and usually a sample of her latest confectionery creation!). Let me give you a rundown of some of my favourite options from Gryphon: Shortbread - this one's in the title, delicious, crumbly, with just the right balance of sweet and salty/buttery flavour. Scones - available as fresh individual scones, or in a traditional farl of 8 wedges, frozen so you can bake them at home. Irish flapjacks - imagine a granola bar held together by butter and brown sugar, OK go to Gryphon and you won't have to imagine. Millionaire bars - small shortbread rectangles with a layer of English Toffee on top, covered in Belgian Chocolate sprinkled with edible gold dust. Millionaire sandwiches - small shortbread cookies (my favourites are the smaller ones :D ) with a layer of English Toffee sandwiched between them, and the whole thing covered in Belgian Chocolate sprinkled with edible gold dust! If you appreciate the true Irish and Scottish heritage of shortbread and scones, this is the place to go. I dare you to stop at just one!
