The location is really beautiful and while you are in the country and will certainly need a car to reach to site, it's still close enough to Brighton (about 4 miles from Ditchling) to be easily accessible. Be warned though, this place is immensely popular and weekend stays are already fully booked for the summer season of 2010. You can check for availability of glades on their website and you may get lucky and find a slot from a cancellation. The lady who runs the site lives in a caravan at the campsite, complete with chickens running about the place. She has a small shop with supplies including milk and firewood. There are also showers and proper toilets. If you don't feel like sleeping in a tent there are also a number of buses, Gypsy caravans and suchlike to hire for a more comfortable stay. The prices are reasonable and this is really a great way to camp, whilst still retaining the magic of the experience. A real gem and unique approach to a great British pastime. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Riverbank is great for picnics. Kids didn't want to leave!

As we only have a folding camper we made good use of the toilets in the Sainsburys in town. Possibly because of the lack of facilities the two times that we have been there have been very few children which does mean that the site is quiet except for the parakeets which are quite noisy in the mornings. Do be aware that there is quite a long narrow road approaching the campsite. Could be awkward at busy times.

(They used to be based near Victoria, but moved a few years ago to Waterloo Cut). As well as the usual range of army-surplus type gear - jackets, vests, shirts and trousers, they do a good line in MA1 flying jackets (£25), Harrington Jackets in a range of colours (and at £19.95, rather than inflated 'retro' prices) and of course foot-wear. They also sell used gear, but most items are brand new, and at their prices there's no need to go down the second hand route. I recently bought a pair of brand new British Army boots here for under £50, which are superbly comfortable (in fact I'm wearing them as I write this) and will doubtless last for years. The shop is very small, very old-fashioned, and run by two amazingly helpful brothers as a family business. They have a very loyal customer base - when I was there recently, they had a regular from Canada buying a pair of desert boots. If they haven't got an item in stock, they will order it in and call you when it's in, but they equally won't pressure you if you decide against a purchase. They'll also give you honest advice if you ask for it - they know their stock. The rise of the internet has seen the death of many traditional army surplus and camping shops, but Waterloo Camping is a one of survivors. If you want excellent value, traditional army surplus gear (and more besides), this is the place to go.

Nestled on the edge of Brentwood and well within driving distance Brentwood Town Centre, it offers allthe usual amenities of a camp site with sectioned off and private camp sites all accesible from a roadway that encompasses and disects the whole site. There are heated and comfortable dormitories for those who do not want to camp. Check out the 'Sapper Lake' at the heart of the site!
