    GOMA's Children's Art Centre

The Gallery of Modern Art is one of my favourite places to visit in Brisbane so it's hard for me to…read moreadmit that I'm actually a little disappointed in their Children's Art Centre. The gallery has put in a lot of work to make sure that the kids programme run alongside whatever exhibitions they're hosting or fit in with one of their collections but I feel that sometimes fun has been sacrificed in the name of art. Take their latest exhibition 'We Miss You Magic Land'. It is filled with delicate, intricate, fantasy landscapes sculpted with sugar. The entire display looks like a fairyland yes but I noticed that the adults were more fascinated than the kids. Some of the young girls stared entranced at the dioramas clearly itching to touch it before being herded through by parents. The lack of interactivity with this exhibition was apparent. The highlight of this exhibition was the computer game where you can build your own fairyland and superimpose your head onto various woodland creatures. Once you customise your own fey creature, it automatically creates an animation of your magical creature running through the fairy landscape. Younger kids below four may have trouble navigating the finicky drop and drag menu but they should be able to manage with assistance. Asides from its own exhibitions, the Children's Art Centre also run activities as part of the gallery's feature exhibitions. For instance, as part of the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the moment, they've constructed a pure white room. You can put stickers anywhere you want - furniture, roof, light fixtures, anywhere but the security camera. Now that's interactivity that works. Children's Art Centre works best primarily for older kids. At a guess I would say about upward of five but they do run Toddler Tuesday from 10am - 10:45am and 11am -11:45am. When I'm babysitting, I always find the kids get distracted after half an hour here but given that there's the State Library and the Museum around the corner, it's not a problem at all.

If anyone is stuck on a Christmas present idea and have a few hundred dollars spare, go directly to…read moreWoolloongabba art gallery and purchase one of the charming sculptural cockatoo or owl pieces by Thomas Munkanome. As words can't possibly describe how charming these bark sculptures are, take a look at the online exhibition through this link http://www.wag.com.au/exhib/2011/TiwiDesign/LifeSpiritBreath/works.html Usually, I hate artwork which rehashes Australian landscape - sculptures of goannas chiselled out of wood, pigs made of fused metal and beachscape paintings of Noosa and the Gold Coast. This is usually the stuff I find at tourist galleries. Unlike these tourist-aimed enterprises, Woolloongabba Art Gallery is a contemporary, commercial gallery for both beginner and professional collectors. Their latest exhibition 'Life, Spirit and Breath' is a contemporary show featuring many artists who uses Tiwi designs in their works. Munkanome's bark sculptures are only a part of an excellent exhibition of Tiwi fabrics, sculptures and paintings. Woolloongabba art gallery run different exhibitions throughout the year - mostly of contemporary Indigenous art though they do represent other styles as well. Check out their website for past and future exhibitions.

Woolloongabba art gallery is no exception to this rule, located very handily on Stanley St this place is full of some seriously cool wares. Supporting both established and emerging artists, you'll be greeted with many diverse contemporary and indigenous art works. With most of them up for grabs as well, these would make great gift ideas for loved ones. (You'd have to love them a lot given the price of good art lately.) Small but quaint, This is well worth a pop-in when in the Woolloongabba area.
