When we bought our current house, it desperately needed some help in the landscaping department. We noticed a home nearby that has some really nice design and work, so we found out who did it. Turned out the Nature's Elements. They came and assessed our needs and had excellent suggestions. The house was on a lot with the yard sloping to the south and west. Jesse, the owner, and his crew did a great job of terracing those yards with retaining walls that added a lot of style to the property. They even had to move some plumbing. From there, they prepped the property for planting, laid lots of gravel, and planted a variety of things, including cactus and succulents. He put together 4 or 5 options for us within a week and presented the 3D plans for us to review. We have a small front yard and we wanted to replace the grass with plants that use less water. Most of the landscapers we talked to were painfully slow to respond to emails and calls. And when they did respond, their quotes were high for such a small job. Nature's Elements was totally different. They were quick to respond and their quote was reasonable. They iterated with us on a couple of designs and stayed flexible throughout the project. They did a great job removing the grass, running power and irrigation, doing the planting and mulching, and cleaning up. Did the crew get everything right the first time? No, but they got most things right and when this Type A client asked for adjustments, they made them quickly and were very nice about it. Well, thanks for responding Jesse, but there is definitely some clarification needed based on what you wrote. I think the majority of the misunderstanding on your behalf is due to you not being involved in every meeting/communication with myself and your team. I get it, that would be impossible to be involved every step of the way, but there were promises made that fell short: 1. I was told a handful of times in emails, which I have, and over the phone that I would get a breakdown of the plant costs. Plain and simple. If the policy is to never provide that, let it be known at the outset and don't have your team communicate anything else. 2. You said you're not sure what discount you're referring to. If it's for the drip irrigation that I mentioned, I have the emails from Andrew stating exactly what I said. If it's for my last ditch request for a partial (less than 25% of the total cost) discount after months of trying to work it out, I also have the email from Brittany rejecting that request and offering nothing. I'm happy to forward those if you have yet to see them yet. 3. I paid for the irrigation inspection, its on my invoice. The follow-up inspection was to make sure it was working correctly, which you said it was. I still wasn't convinced so I looked at it myself and found a kink in the line that was buried under the soil and obviously hadn't been checked. 4. You say you haven't been on the property in several months but you were here in September and November, so... Regarding scheduling issues, two are documented in emails, and there was one other via phone calls. Again, you weren't part of the phone calls and I'm not sure if you saw the emails so that could be the mistake. 5. My regular maintenance crew has worked on the property over 2 years, and they've kept everything thriving. They know what they're doing, which further lead me to believe it was something with plant selection/placement as opposed to maintenance. I'm sorry, but suggesting that you rely on one meeting with the homeowner to determine sun/shade is just a cop out. Look at the plants that were there before, look at the surrounding vegetation, look at the trees, etc., and along with your experience, make the recommendation. Aside from mine, you have a 1-star review, a 2-star review, and seven 5-star reviews. Obviously I'm in the minority but I'm not alone. Again, this was just my experience, and others may have had no troubles at all. I'm simply putting this out there for people that want to do as much due diligence as possible. read more

Recently, they were scheduled for lawn care in my both my front and backyard but were unable to gain access to the backyard because of a locked gate. We started using NEL after they purchased our former provider's company Pink Flamingo. Things have gone down hill steadily. Some days their team does great, others, so-so, others pretty bad. They have large crews that often are switched out and are kept to strict timelines and whizz around all with headphones on, none of them interacting with you or bringing things to your attention. They buzz in and they buzz out. Though they have detailed checklists, they ignore things like dead grass, broken/inoperable irrigation lines, and nickel-and-dime you for everything. They installed some drip lines and we'd asked the crew several times to nail them back down as they bulge up in the heat and they never did so. They recently replaced a damaged irrigation line, yet left the one on the end of the line inoperable and had the nerve to charge us extra after we'd already paid the first invoice. They recently raised our prices after a very short time with them making them the most expensive provider we've worked with who gives the lowest quality of work. Previous owner Dave was phenomenal, personable, detail oriented. This week they no-showed for the second time in a few months and our entire yard/home is overgrown. They don't communicate, don't follow through, and when things go wrong, raise their voice to you and get argumentative. We feel they're lacking in professionalism and often common courtesy. I have had such a problem the past few years with my roses getting eaten up to the point I thought I was going to loose them. Just moved into new house and really liked the landscaping (eclectic mix of succulents and indigenous flora). Asked the previous owner who had been doing it and got a referral to Jesse at Nature's Elements. Based on this, I decided to contract them to do some excavation and pour a concrete pad for my BBQ grill. Weeks have gone by with repeated attempts to get a quote and schedule a date to get the work done, but they have been very non-responsive. I was originally happy to give them my business but based on the poor customer service I have decided to take my business elsewhere. I have been working with NEL for over a year and I have enjoyed their efficient and honest service. I moved to North Park a few years ago and HATED the landscape that came with the property-- overgrown, water-sucking, and not very dog friendly. I called them out to do a landscaping bid for a drought tolerant landscape that would still allow my buddy to have plenty of space to roll around. The employees were very knowledgable and helpful in explaining the different options I had for my landscape, but also helped spark my imagination to see the potential of my yard. I was afraid a drought tolerant landscape would mean all spiky plants and no flowers, but Jesse and Kaity created a plant list that would let me have flowers all year round and bring in butterflies and birds too. Their bid was the most detailed out of all the landscape bids I received and they were also were able to give me an idea of the cost of maintaining the new landscape once they were done. Once we got started the project progressed quickly and their crews were friendly and knowledgeable. They have been maintaining the landscape since the installation (8 months) and the maintenance has helped shape the design into what Jesse and I envisioned. I hired NEL to clean-up the 20-year-old landscape at our rental property in Chula Vista. The job entailed a large amount of judicious plant removal, pruning and replacement of dead material... It was a massive job with a very limited budget. The original invoice was very detailed and comprehensive, as was the second invoice when we chose to add to the scope of work. As I was managing this job from several time zones away, Brittany and her team could not have been more accommodating, communicative and responsive with me and my tenants. At two points in the job, Brittany made the extra effort to arrange a video call to show me, in real time, the progress being made in our yard. When it came to selecting plants, I was provided with a very detailed, thoughtful pallet with many beautiful, budget-sensitive options- along with a photo, each plant was described in terms of its height, water needs, pollination capacity, speed of growth, etc. I was very impressed with how much effort went into planning for those replacement plants. Overall, I told the owner of the company that I am 110% pleased with how things turned out, as are my tenants, and that I would absolutely consult with them first for future work. This company, and the people who work for it, really do seem to "dig" what they do. That motto is no joke! read more

Our previous gardener recommended NEL when he moved to the east coast. Their service is inconsistent at best; most of the time the crew does the minimum; little initiative and poor quality. Basic trimming etc. often went undone despite the fact that these services were listed on the crew's worksheet and were checked off as having been done. We discovered that we had to go out and meet them when they arrived to remind them what needed attention on their worksheet. Their drip irrigation specialist who was supposed to address some irrigation problems, left most of the problem unaddressed; they charged us a high additional fee for his services, and yet he left much of the work undone. Their business practices leave a good bit to be desired as well; billing is often inaccurate and they are slow to make the changes to remedy the errors. We quit them and have found a really terrific garden to take their place. I'd look for other companies if i were you. read more
