I get it, this salon may not be for everyone, but I've yet to receive anything less than love and care with my tresses. I visit the same stylist, and I feel my hair is always in good hands. This time, I booked a vacation style, and although my vision had to modified for practicality, Tamika presented me with options and walked me through the process. Oh my.. I truly wanted to support this business. Sadly I couldnt even get in for an appointment. I booked an online consultation for my mother and these people never connected with us. I used to frequent this place years ago. I had the most fabulous stylist. She has since left the place but not after telling me how bad it was working for Tamika. I had my first appointment a couple of weeks ago with the owner of the salon, Ms. Tamika. The maps app on my iphone had me driving in circles! Thankfully, I spotted her standing outside, because I probably would have continued to drive past the salon. I haven't gotten a professional trim in over two years and I had enough of the single strand knots messing up my hairstyles. I had deep conditioner marinating in my hair initially, because I knew she was going to use a blow dryer in order to give me a good trim. She went ahead and rewashed my hair with shampoo and conditioner (from her own hair care line). Then left to let the conditioner penetrate my hair for about ten minutes. Once rinsed, we went back to the salon area, so that she could start the blow drying process. We talked about hair products and the benefits of certain ingredients for our hair. From our conversation, I believe she is very knowledgeable on all things relating to hair. Which explains why she is so successful! I explained to her that I want healthy hair, but I didn't want to lose my length. So she semi-dusted my ends. I felt like I lost a good amount of length, but my ends felt so much BETTER! When she was finished, she twisted my hair up into a cute updo that I absolutely loved. Durriyyah was GREAT! My actual service visit was amazing. I went in to get my hair retwisted and repaired. Durriyyah, my hair stylist, was cool and did a great job on my hair. I actually arrived slightly late but she got to me rather quickly. She was extremely nice and easy going so we were able to have some small conversations while she worked on my hair. She got completed with everything in 2 hours when 3 hours was the initial expected time. I also am very thankful to the woman whose name I didn't get. She had a shaved sides hairstyles with braids up top. She helped make me feel better about the actual service appointment prior to coming in, in regards to cost. She also checked in throughout the service to make sure everything was good. I generally don't go into shops for my hair but as I felt I needed some repair I decided to go. My only real knock is the consultation. The visit I hindsight seemed pointless. I went in expecting to need repair. My hair was looked over and I was quoted accordingly. After looking at their site I noticed my quote on my retwist was $85 but the site showed $65. I was also quoted $35/hr for repair which was cool. I've had my hair retwisted often so I know there's no reason for my retwist portion to be on the high end based on my length or thickness. The calling process for this was horrible, because in multiple attempts I was given very vague unhelpful answers that never clarified why I was higher just this may be why reasons. This of course had me feel like why is consultation $20 (which applies towards service) if it doesn't get me real expectations. Upon our coming back before my appointment the before mentioned lady helped me feel somewhat better on pricing. She explained the pricing to me differently than before and I agreed with her explanation. Upon completion of the service I went from $120+ expectations to a $65 service. I had an AWFUL experience at Natural Resources Salon with Allriyana. She is incredibly rude, insensitive and careless! During my visit, I received the everyday beauty (wash & flatiron) and a color treatment to touch up my roots. This was my first time visiting the Salon and the experience was AWFUL! Allriyana didn't pay attention during my hair wash. She was too busy joking around with the other stylist. This was incredibly annoying, especially since she was washing color (chemical treatment) from my hair. Additionally, the shampoo didn't react well. I asked about the tingling feeling a couple of times and she rudely snapped at me saying it was the mint extract. She wasn't concerned about me (the client) but she was concerned about chatting with her colleagues. Next, Allriyana burned me with the flat iron to the point that I started crying. She didn't apologize and just blamed the burn and sizzle on the heat protector. I went to the bathroom to dry my tears. Upon returning she snapped, got in my face and said "Do you want me to do your hair or not?" I was shaken up by the entire situation. I didn't know what to do, especially since my hair was not completely done. At this point I was upset and humiliated. Allriyana is the rudest and most disrespectful hair stylist I ever encountered. This entire situation could have been avoided with an apology and a little empathy for my pain. After she finished, I went to the bathroom and noticed hair dye on the back of my dress. I left the bathroom and pointed it out to Allriyana. She gave me a dry paper towel and said this was all she could do for me...SERIOUSLY? JUST RIDICULOUS! She burned my scalp, made me cry and ruined my dress...this was just an AWFUL experience! Now, a few days removed -- my hair doesn't look good. She used the wrong color for my hair and did a poor job applying treatment. I don't recommend this place. In addition to my horrible experience, the atmosphere of the salon doesn't match the price point. It's located in a old house. The second floor has old furniture and lacks decor and warmth. I came here for an everyday beauty style service $65: Includes: Wash/condition Blowdry Style My stylist for my visit was Courtney, she was pretty friendly, and was receptive to my requests when styling my hair. The styling products that she used, left my hair moisturized and smelling great. The new location is open and airy. Parking: there is metered parking in front of the salon, which was about 90¢ an hr. When I moved to Houston in 2012, I was looking for a place that would help me care for my natural hair, not suggest I get a relaxer or try to straighten my hair regularly. I'm glad I found Natural Resources. The salon is open, quiet and clean. There are televisions and conversation, but it's not loud and unprofessional like some salons I've experienced in the past. The stylists are friendly but extremely professional. They clean the sinks after every wash. This salon does not over book so they have no need to rush. Every client gets the attention we deserve. I went here in March of this year and I had a great experience. I just got my ends trimmed a lady name Liz cut my hair she did a good job. She blow dried my hair trimmed my ends then gave me two braids. It cost $35 which I think is reasonable. The staff was very nice and outgoing I felt very welcomed. The only thing that I didn't like was the parking spots are limited at certain times of the day. I was 30 mins late for my appointment but the were very nice about it and still took me despite the fact that they were almost closed after I found parking. Well why didn't you let me know before hand? Why aren't the prices updated on the website when we booked? It's not my fault this stylist took three hours when others have only taken two. I feel like the stylist saw that my hair was more than she bargained for but instead of telling me upfront, which I would have understood, she had the front desk say "the prices for their services have increased and now I owe more money." I walked out the salon with a haircut that was okay. The next day I was unhappy with the shape and wanted it styled a little shorter. I returned with a picture to have it fixed and what I received was nothing like the picture. It was not even close! It didn't even look good! I explained that I didn't want it super short. I even referred to someone in the salon to show how short I did NOT want it! And, it's shorter than that! I watch Tamika on the Live Well Network all the time and love her so I decided to try her salon. I've lived in NYC and a couple of other major cities in the nation. The prices are in line with any other upscale salon so the price wasn't really an issue. Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed. It took three weeks to get a consultation and they couldn't do my hair the same day as the consultation. (That should have been my first clue.) After the "consultation", my appoint was scheduled four weeks out from that date. The "consultation" consisted of a girl reading out a checklist to me, and me responding yes or no as she went down the checklist. Not once did she look at my hair. I had to interject and let her know that I really wanted a good cut so it will flow evenly when wearing it in its natural state . Although concerned, I decided to go through the process. This is what threw me for a loop! I left out of the country and returned the Friday before my appointment. When I powered on my phone I had text message stating " This is natural resources salon, since we have not gotten a response to our call confirming your appointment, we will have to assume that you will not be coming." ...WAIT, WHAT?! Did I not have an APPOINTMENT made already?.... Needless to say, this steered me away from Natural Resources. As stated before, I've been in many high end salons and have never seen such unprofessionalism. I would also speak on the attitudes of the young ladies at the front desk but is it really necessary? I believe this review speaks for itself. I was highly disappointed in the customer service I received from Natural Resources. I have been growing out my relaxer for about 13 months and finally couldn't take it anymore! So I went in for a BIG CHOP! The overall vibe in the salon is pretty chill yet, professional. Prior to having your hair styled at the shop you need to make an appointment for a consultation. Tameka, one of the shop's owners, is very pleasant and was able to describe many styles that I could have and the pros and cons of twists, extensions, weaves and any other "protective style" I wanted. I initially wanted to get twist extensions, but decided that I didn't want to spend the extra time sitting in the chair and money. So I decided to go with a big chop (cutting all of the relaxed ends off of my hair) and a flat twist out. My stylist, Autumn, is very nice and washed, cut and styled my hair. She is fairly new to the salon, but checked with Tameka in regards to my cut and style multiple times. And she was very excited for my new afro! All of the products used and sold in the salon have been formulated and are made by hand by the owners. Something that I didn't expect is their deposit policy. When you have your consultation, you pay $20, and when I initially decided to get twists, that was a $45 deposit (and not the $20, for any extension styles you must make a deposit at the time you make the appointment, mostly because that cuts down on no-shows) However, that is deducted from the overall price of your new do. (The final cost of my wash, cut, blow out and style was $65-$45=$20!) So really, you aren't losing any money. I will definitely be going back to Natural Resources! read more

I initially went in for a consultation. Over the phone I was told that the owner was going to actually touch my hair, examine it, and get a feel for my hair. Once I arrived the owner did not even touch my hair. She didn't wet it, put any products, nor attempt to comb it. She basically asked questions and showed me pictures of styles to see if I would like them. I was in the process of transitioning at the time, which is why I was expecting some type of examination of my hair. I saw her do about 2 or 3 other consultations where she put product on clients hair, wet it, and detangled their hair. The owner asked me what type of products I used on my hair and once I told her she let me know that they were all bad for my hair and insisted I purchase their products. I ended up getting a wash, trim, and style done the same day. The wash was great and it left my hair feeling really soft. They also blow dried my hair to clip the dead ends, which I was sort of against since I do not put any heat in my hair. I was however disappointed in the style. I instructed the stylist that I wanted two braids going back into a "crown braid". The stylist failed to tell me the braid would be an under-braid, so I wasn't too pleased with that. Now that I've done the big chop I doubt that I will be returning to this salon. The first impression just wasn't a good one. read more

I've been here a number of times and every time I call in for an appointment I ask myself why I keep calling back given how bad the front desk staff is. Maybe it's the fact that I hate waiting at salons and this place tends to get you in and out in 2 hours, which is great. Maybe it's the fact that the salon is quiet, though sometimes that can be eerie. Maybe it's because I haven't had a horrendous experience the times I've visited for coloring my hair or trim visits. Don't quite know. What I do know is that the condescending airheads in front are now grating severely on the nerves and there isn't enough greatness in the actual services received to make up for that level of irritation. I made my appointment for the 2 strand twist and I found a picture on Pinterest of the length that I wanted, she had to do it just a little longer because my hair was the length I wanted. They have their own product line with I love, it smells so good and I love the natural ingredients in it. I thought it was going to take 4 to 6 hours for her to complete my hair but when she was done in about 3 hours, I was so impressed and my hair turned out amazing. I have really mixed feelings about my experience with Natural Resources. On one hand, they seem like a great salon. The space is roomy and clean, and scheduling was super easy. The stylist was timely and generally pleasant (which is a huge plus for me, given the disregard that many stylists have for starting appointments on time). The main reason I'm giving them a middle-of-the-road rating is that their pricing for haircuts was inflated as of March 2018. I had only recently big chopped, so I was still learning haircut protocol. I went in for an edge-up and fade on the back and sides (nothing cut on top), and was charged around $45 "for an hour cut." When I called to make the appointment, the receptionist informed me that while that was the usual price for cuts, a simple fade or taper would start around $25, which seemed reasonable. At any rate, I was ultimately charged for a more complicated cut as listed on their site at the time, but I had to rush to get back to work, and I was in no mood to get into an argument about it. I just chalked it up as a lesson learned, but after doing more research into other shops, I now know that this was indeed way too much for a cut. I spoke to some friends, and the general consensus is that I fell for a common salon trap. They overcharge for cuts because a lot of women who are new to having short hair don't have a good gauge for haircut pricing. It feels a bit exploitative, but I understand that businesses have the right to charge however they feel. As a client, though, it never feels good to get caught like that. Hopefully this can be a little heads up for future clients. All in all, Natural Resources seems like a good place for natural hair and loc styles, but if you are considering a cut, l would advise looking into an actual barber shop. I get the sense that there may have been some other complaints about this, because the prices for cuts on their website are slightly different than they were a few weeks ago. read more

I went to Natural Resources this past Saturday for the first time. I was a bit nervous going in, as my salon experiences for the past few years haven't been the most pleasant. Natural Resources was the most relaxing and professional hair experience I've had. It was clean, the people that worked there were efficient and non-overbearing, and the salon is very spread out and comfortable. If I'm not mistaken, my stylist was Elizabeth (and please forgive me if I mixed up names). She was extremely friendly and patient (this was my first natural hair appointment, and she didn't judge my formerly flawed haircare regimen) and truly cared about what I wanted for my hair. For the first time in the history of my hair journey, my stylist ASKED me if she could cut more, instead of just chopping away. This was huge to me, and I've dealt with scissor-happy stylists most of my life. All-in-all, I was more than satisfied with my visit. I got two flat braids and am currently wearing a twist-out today. I've been natural for four years now but have always worn my hair in braids because I had no idea how to wear my hair out. So therefore on the day of my appointment, the owner is GHOST, and I'm left to then consult with the stylist about what I want now sitting in the chair on the day of my appointment. LOL! Come on now Tamika! Call a thing a thing! This is a complete utter waste of time, money and energy. You won't admit it but it is TRUTH. My advice to anyone even remotely thinking about going to this place, go to another salon where you can actually consult with your stylist FOR FREE!!!!!!! But trust me, there are far better stylists in Houston than these people. You can actually find better stylists in beauty school. No joke. There is NOOOO excuses for not covering the gray when that was the SOLE purpose of my consult and my appointment. At the consult, THE OWNER, TAMIKA, recommended the color chosen for my gray coverage. At the appointment, the color didn't take AT ALL. The "before" looked exactly like the "after". The stylist then blames the owner saying she (the stylist) didn't do the consult. Absolutely love this place, it took a while before I could get an appointment but once I got in and scheduled my appointments accordingly I was in. Every hair style I've gotten I was very pleased and amazed and my styles lasted because I followed instructions given. I asked for a professional look and was very excited when I saw the finished product. People you have to go in every so often and get your style touched up. Ahhhhh, this place. I saw the owner on a local show. Liked her hair so I called and made an appt with HER. I was very specific about seeing HER. I was assured I would. The consultation was set. The day BEFORE my consultation I was called and told they would need to do my consultation "by phone". Yes, by phone! The receptionist proceeds to ask me questions about my hair over the damn phone. Oh and there is a charge for the phone consultation too. RED FLAG! At the end of this mess I tried to confirm again that my appt would be WITH THE OWNER. This chile assured me it would be. I went in for my initial consultation which the owner at no time even touched my hair and totally been done over the phone. This should have been a warning sign of things to come. I still went ahead and booked for a wash, trim and installation of clip in extensions to let my hair have a rest. The stylist was nice, the hair products were good and my trim was awesome she didn't take to much off. But apparently the consultant never share with the stylist what was discussed in the consultation. I attempted to re-explain to the stylist what I wanted. I even showed her a picture and told her I was starting working in a very conservative new job that I wanted a conservative style. She took an hour to braid my hair, sew, clip and cut my expensive new clip ins into a fro hawk: not what I asked for. I told her this wasn't what I wanted. At this point the appointment was running an hour over. I asked her just to pull the mass into a bun and I'd fix it myself. I got home and immediately unclipped and cut the mess out of my hair and unbraided all the cornrows. Other than the wash and trim I feel like I wasted two afternoons and alot of money. I will not be returning. An update on my review after spending another 2 hours of my life trying to install what was left of my extensions (since i wasnt properly shown at the salon as promised and paid for) I've given up. I finally found my salon to cut my natural hair. Love my stylists Paulette, she was very, very knowledgeable. I didn't care for the products that was used to style me. Once I got home my hair was extremely dry, other than that it was an amazing experience. ONE MORE THING...they are affordable, no more great cuts for me. LOL!
