5 stars because it's so unexpected. Last December I visited the Natural Bridge State Park for the first time as part of my waterfall blog research. Yesterday I wanted to see it adorned in fall colors. This is a special place. An old abandoned marble quarry with caves carved into it from glacial activity. How often can you see something so unique right in our backyard? There is a $5 fee for parking. When the gate is closed you may still walk into the park. There are boardwalks leading you to different viewing areas of the caves. Make sure you make it to the top to see the marble waterfall. Mass MoCA has ten speakers placed into the walls of the large quarry walls to create a natural amphitheater. For 15 minutes each night (based on solar time) there is a 15 minute period of classical music. You can check it out online for the fine details. A very unique place.

This was a unique place that is worth a 30 minute visit if you are out in North Adams. The Natural Bridge State Park is an old marble quarry and there is tons of marble still remaining. At the top is a parking area and be prepared to pay to park. The prices have increased to 5 dollars for a mass plate and 10 for non-mass plate. Sadly I was using a rental car that had an out of state plate so we were charged more. It's worth 5 dollars, but 10, eh. There is a small visitor center next to the parking lot if you need to use the restroom but before they close which is 5, they close the bathrooms so many people were out of luck when they were leaving as the door was already closed 30 minutes before. The area has gorgeous views of the Appalachian Mountains and the natural damn that was created from the Marble. There are steps that go down and are overlooking the carved marble river gorge that was left behind when the quarry closed. Throughout the park are informational plaques to tell you about the aspects, how things were made and how it runs. Beautiful place for a picnic or just to explore on a nice day. We took gorgeous pictures and just enjoyed the gorgeous weather. Great place for a short visit. Also if you don't want to pay for parking, you can park at the bottom and walk up. We didn't have a choice as one of our members has issues with their knees. So keep that in mind.

Mass MOCA installation. BUT - the park closes at 4:45. So how can anyone hear this???!!

Not sure how I even heard of this place. But I did. So here I went. As far as state parks go, this one is pretty small. Only 48 acres. But a lot to see in those 48 acres. Takes about an hour to see every thing. When you are first driving in, you see the marble amphitheater. A grassy circle with tall marble walls surrounding it. Apparently there is an "art installation" here. Classical music plated at astronomical sundown every evening. HOWEVER the park closes at 4:45. So - if there are no visitors to hear it, do the rocks make a sound??? It looked like it would have been a gorgeous spot to sit with a bottle of wine, a loved one, and some tapas, enjoy sunset and some Classic Rock music. BUT the park is closed. When you reach the parking lot, there is a short trail that leads you to the white marble dam. A sign tells you that this is the only WHITE marble dam in the USA. Which leads me to believe there are other marble dams, just not white ones? It was pretty and peaceful. Further down the trail you come to the Natural Bridge. The parks namesake. And this was pretty disappointing. Maybe since I go out west every year and I've seen all the huge sandstone arches and bridges, I saw this bridge and it looked more like a teeny tiny slot tunnel. I guess it's a natural bridge in the Webster dictionary sense. But this was supposed to be the highlight. My advice to DVR - change the park name to be White Marble Dam State Park. Not as many disappointed customers.

I absolutely love this place! There is a small fee for parking, and it's a very short walk to the natural bridge. It's not a huge park, and there isn't a beach or places to swim, but there are picnic tables and outdoor grill sites. It would be a fantastic place for a day with family. The views are wonderful. I especially love the white marble dam. The only one of its kind in North America. Certainly a place worth visiting.

Nice place to stop to see - spent about an hour here . Considering this is not free to the public and there is an admission fee, I am just really surprised that the huuuuuge pot hole at the entrance was there when I went a few weeks ago. I hope it's fixed by now, but I would guess by the size of it, it had to have been there for a while. Be careful.

MASS MoCA sign for the sound installation in the quarry

Lovely park highly suggested after strolling through North Adams, MASS MoCA, or driving down the Mohawk Trail. Park you car next to the red barn and Beaver Mill. Don't drive all the way up. The best part is waking and being surprised by the huge quarry in front if you! At sunset you can also enjoy a sound installation there. If you keep walking you will be above the big quarry, and you can look down though vertical paths to the marble natural bridge. Few board explain you the history of the area. A nice park to take a break!

Small uphill ledge where you can view the whole giant ledge area below you.

Small, but very cool natural rock formation. Have driven past this countless times -- should have stopped long ago!

Unfortunately, the peak was cloud covered with breaking sun during our visit. The drive up was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the charming woodland scenes. Once at the top, the Veterans War Memorial Tower added a historical touch to the beauty of the surroundings. The short hike around the summit was peaceful. If you're feeling adventurous, there are longer trails that seemed perfect for a day hike. We didn't have time to tackle them all but definitely plan to return. We hid a coin in a slate rock wall near the Appalachian Trail for our church brother to find should he reach this spot during his early 2025 attempt at traversing the trail. There's a small visitor center however it was closed during our visit. We were unable to grab a quick bite at Bascom Lodge. All in all, Mount Greylock is a must-see if you're in the Berkshires, offering the perfect blend of nature, history, and beauty. Just be sure to bring your camera--the views are unforgettable!

That being said... I'm glad that we ended up in this campground. We only stayed here for one night so we could enjoy tubing down the Deerfield River during the day, and have somewhere to cook and sleep at night. This campground was perfect for what we were looking for and was much more quiet than the one I thought I was booking originally. I can't speak for all of the sites, but we booked site 21 and thought it was perfect. It's right on the corner of the access road and directly across from the bathrooms. Due to it being on the corner, it offered some privacy as we only had neighbors on one side who were a bit separated by trees. It was decent sized. We were able to fit two vehicles, two tents, and had enough space to sit around the campfire. The firepit comes with a grate which you can use to grill. Also the bathroom light stays on 24/7 which is helpful when you need to walk there in the middle of the night. The mosquitoes weren't horrendous either. For $17, it was great.

We camped there for 6 days this year from a Saturday. The Cold River (not too cold as the name suggests) runs parallel to a good number of campsites on the lower level of the park. We were camped 15ft away from a river which served as a beautiful backdrop that we could hear all day and night as it rolled over they my rocks that created small and medium pools that we swam/sat in. The bathrooms were clean and very close by which is useful with kids. There area by trails to hike or bike right in the campground area. The campground is also within very close driving distance to plenty if water based activities on the Deerfield River. We went on a guided inflatable kayak tour with CrapApple tours which was okay but for the money and freedom it is much better to buy/bring your own boat or inflatable float/tube and just float down the river. It is a gorgeous view and lots of fun. North Adams is a fast 20 minute drive and on a rainy day we took the kids out for ice cream and the scenery up route 2 was beautiful. It's Worth the ride to North Adams which is also home to Mass Museum of Contemporary Art. Mohawk was a great escape and we are already planning on returning next year.

We stayed for three nights over Columbus Day weekend, the last three nights that the park was open. Though it was technically fully booked, at least a third of the campers didn't show up, leaving us with lots of privacy on our first two nights! The park rangers on duty over the weekend were helpful and incredibly friendly. The camping sites are perfect walking distance to all of the trails and a nice mid-point if you plan on hiking several in one day. We enjoyed the Busby trail as well as doing some exploring around Bog Pond. Our big regret was saving Tannery Falls for our last morning and being surprised by a sudden bout of rain. Oh well, it'll give us something to return for! We stayed at site #29, which shares a long pathway (sloped, so it isn't good for a tent, but would be great for a few AWD cars) with site #28 (a beautiful grassy spot that we'd prefer over #29). It also backs up (about 10' of woods separating them) to site #30, which is a small space looking out onto the one-lane road and up the hill to the bathrooms. All of the outer spaces were moderately private with trees on three sides of them. The spaces that are in the center of the park are, as others indicate, very much out in the open. It's a rolling apple orchard with very few trees in it, so it's excellent for RVs, but maybe not the best for tents. Finally, the bathrooms were well within what I'd expect for a DCR facility, though the showers were the dingiest that I've experienced (bring a pair of flip flops!). That being said, there was never a shortage of paper towels, toilet paper, or hot water. There are also beautiful large sinks outside of each of the two bathrooms that are meant for washing dishes. The dumpsters and recycling containers are located at the entrance to the camp site loop and are an easy five-minute or less walk from any of the sites.
