They were talking with a woman who introduced herself as the PTO pres. and if that's the case, I'm appalled. I feel so sorry for these kids. Sad, just sad. I would hope that these folks will do better by these inner city kids. I wrote a formal complaint to the board. I have no doubt that my child is ready for college based on their experience at Burke. It's a warm and welcoming community with academic rigor, but kids are not as stressed out as some other schools. Kids are taught to be independent thinkers and to self advocate. It's an urban school so wonderful opportunities to explore the city. Sports facilities are lacking, but an easy compromise to make for the location. Sports teams are no cut which means kids can play sports every season if they choose.

His lead teacher is amazing with him--and, tho it was hard to leave my baby so early, she made the transition as easy as possible. We stay in contact communication about every little thing. The best thing to see in daycare/school is your kid's face light up as soon as he sees his teacher...and that's exactly what happens. Not to mention, the other children are all so sweet. School has a strong philosophy, rooted in african heritage, which i think is beautiful and uplifting. But you definitely have to be comfortable with that. It is a wonderful place though...full of love, support and acceptance towards ALL. LOVE IT. (and am so grateful to have found such a wonderful place for my son.)

I should say as a disclaimer though, don't come expecting some 5 star level cooking, if you are looking for that, you shouldn't be looking for a volunteer cooked meal anyway. But the ladies cooking here really did it up right. I had the boneless fillets, which were fresh, skin on, crispy and hot. Other main courses that were available were a whole fried fish, crab cakes and shrimp. With each main course you get 2 sides (macaroni, french fries, corn bread, green beans). I went for the macaroni and green beans and YUM. You also get a cute little juice box with it, so hey, why not. Everything I had was damn good, it felt like I was back in Michigan.. almost. One thing that really put St. Augustine's Fish Fry over the top though, was that THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS. It is so rare for a church to do something like this for a cheap meal, but I was stoked. Lowell has done so much to support our kids academically and socially, including during the difficult pandemic years. Our boys love going to school, and they have a vocabulary to express their feelings in amazing ways. The teachers are first-rate and the small classes and first-name basis with everyone has helped our kids feel like they are part of a real community that has a set of progressive, shared values. The campus is awesome, too, from the classroom spaces to the beautiful outdoor front field and playground spaces, plus being across the street from Rock Creek park. I was a public school kid, but my wife sold me on the benefit of a K-8 school, and I'm so glad she did. We are so glad we chose Lowell, and we know our kids will see benefits from the school throughout their lives.

If you're a parent of a child between the ages of 2-8, this is the place to be...when it's open to the public. Here are all the details: 1) Hours: It's open when school is not in session. That means on weekends and during school breaks. (Check their website for their break schedule. For example, Winter Break 2021 ran from December 18th through January 2nd.) A few neighbors report it's open during the week in the evening. 2) Space: It's one large, tiered open area completely fenced in. There's a large turf area perfect for running around or soccer. There are different levels with plenty of areas to sit for parents. 3) Equipment: The most popular items are the zip line, a two-level fast slide and a rope tunnel course. They also have swings, lots of climbing equipment, a wooden bear, gargoyles art, a bear cave, two sand pits and so much more. My four-year-old daughter spends hours here without ever getting bored. 4) Parking: There's a small parking lot at the school. If it's full, easy street parking nearby can be found. One thing I didn't see while there are bathrooms. If you really need to go, walk north along nearby Wisconsin Avenue to local restaurants.
