Johnny and his team just finished our backyard this morning and I can't say enough good things! For starters, I reached out to them and found them to be responsive and available quickly. The initial consultation was thorough, and they prepared the quote quickly. The quote was detailed, it was easy to discuss/implement any changes - it felt like a truly cooperative process to come to a plan that we liked, was practical for our lifestyle, and within our budget. We were really looking for a company that could come in and take care of everything without the need to subcontract anything out, or organize additional vendors on our own and they fit that bill. They installed turf, removed 2 old rotting tree stumps, cleared out and replanted 2 areas of the garden, replaced a broken/rotting fence and set of steps, carted away any junk from the yard that didn't belong, and even repaired a hole in the cement left by the previous owners. The other thing that I really appreciated was that they listened when we said we wanted to keep things very low maintenance. Plants were chosen in a way that doesn't require us to fuss over them and allows us, our kid, and our dog to actually use the space without being worried about things getting ruined. During the work they required access through an apartment and were respectful of the space (and everyone's time), and left everything clean. The job took a touch longer than anyone initially expected, but that was caused by weather delays and a few extra items that came up as they were working. Communication about any changes was prompt, the additional work that came up was explained clearly, and I found any additional charges to be more than fair. We're so excited to get to use our garden and watch it grow as the weather improves, and I look forward to having Johnny and his team return for any regular maintenance. I cannot believe how lucky I got in getting Johnny and Oliver to create my dream backyard! They struck the perfect balance of both following my preliminary vision for the yard (raised beds, rain barrel, native plants, place for a compost) and helping to augment it and made inspired suggestions that really took it to a whole new level. For example, I recently installed a new HVAC system and they suggested building a partial fence with a raised bed in front to block with wind generated from it and to make the whole yard look significantly better. They also suggested a cobblestone path that reused existing materials to my compost bin. My stepmother has been professionally gardening for about 40 years and has impeccable taste when it comes to plants (and is ruthless when she doesn't like them!). She recently visited and was very impressed by the plant choices the Native Garden team made and by the quality of the specimens they sourced for me (Johnny and Oliver drove all over New Jersey to hunt me down a mountain laurel and my blueberry bushes are mature and amazing.) In addition to being a great designer, Johnny was an incredibly thorough communicator throughout the whole project, keeping me up to date with helpful emails detailing costs and the status of the project. They also completed my entire yard (irrigation, rubble and concrete removal, bluestone patio construction, gravel installation, planting, fence building, planting, and mulching) in less than three weeks. After having worked with various different service providers since I bought my house a couple of months ago, I was particularly impressed by how they flexed with their crew depending on their project to ensure the highest quality of work in the shortest time. Johnny and his team did an amazing job updating the front and backyard gardens at my Queens townhouse. I had some basic ideas about what I was looking for - switch out some planters, swap some ornamental grasses for pollinator-friendly perennials, and build a raised bed for garden clippings. Not only did Johnny turn those ideas into reality, he also brought the expertise I was looking for to make them better than I imagined. He recommended combinations of plants so that my garden will be interesting for people and pollinators year-round, including bringing in two small trees that brought needed height to the space. Highly recommend working with the team at Native NY Gardens. We started with a very rough outdoor space - raw pavement and a line of dead pine trees installed right before we moved in last year. It was important to us that we not only renovate the space so that it is more usable and stylish, but make sure we didn't have to keep replanting year over year. Native NY Gardens delivered. They recommended a collection of planters to complement the space and helped us find a solution for the dead trees - one that would look good and create privacy from the neighboring apartment. They also recommended the half deck and half turf approach, which really transformed the space and makes it feel like an oasis. It's our new favorite 'room' in the house! Honestly an absolute dream, 6 stars if I could. Plants and greenery make me very happy, but as a first-time 'yard owner,' I didn't necessarily feel comfortable investing the time and resources in a garden that would either a) look ugly or b) die bc it wasn't planted correctly. I'm also very focused on living 'green' and wanted to support local ecology in ways that would've required extensive research on my end. Enter Native NY Gardens -- Johnny and Oliver -- who were attentive, thorough, sweet, and talented throughout. My two biggest parameters were 1) I have a pretty nutty dog who I wanted the yard to work for (inc. chance of occasional urine), and 2) I wanted increase privacy with my neighbors. On both counts, they blew me away. I have a lovely, natural-looking, gorgeous yard full of browns and greens with flowers and berries on the way. A couple lovely trees will provide the privacy, while big mulch chips ensure that, even after a torrential downpour, my dog came in with damn near clean feet! I can't wait to see the evolution of the garden which I love already. OH! and this is a big OH! I was ecstatic with their work, and thought the pricing was super reasonable, so imagine my surprise when Johnny contacts me saying he wanted to LOWER the price by $400 bc my yard wasn't in as bad of shape to begin with as they'd anticipated!! I had a concrete Queens backyard at my house that I've been in for a year. I knew I needed some help with site assessment and plant selection. I also knew I wanted native plants because A) we have absolutely gorgeous native plants and B) I wanted to decolonize my garden as most of our ideas about "gardening" come from English colonialism. I googled "native plant gardening" and these guys came up. It was a several step process but in the end I wound up with some herbs, the blueberry bushes I was dying for and an organic looking selection of native plants that thrill me every day. They shopped and delivered all plants, some of which we had decided ahead of time and a few gorgeous surprises that we discussed on the phone while they were at the nursery. Johnny was amazing and super informative when I came to him about an overgrown planter in front of our business. I've contacted so many businesses and none of them wanted to take on the job because it was such a small 'project' (but little do they know we have a giant garden in the back that needs work in the future HA!) But Johnny was super responsive when I had a billion of questions! At one point I even asked if I can get a sketch of what the planter would look like after getting cleaned up and replanted and Johnny was like ok! I know nothing about plants so I put all my trust in him when it came to picking plants out, I was looking for something colorful but also very low maintenance (I'm not very good at keeping plants alive :)..). Johnny came up with an idea and sent me photos of what kind of plants he thought would look great in the planter and we loved of course! We were looking to get the job done fairly soon as we could not bear to look at hot mess that is our planter anymore. Johnny made that work for us and literally came three days after we agreed on what types of plants were going into the planted! After working on our planter he gave us some tips on how to keep the plants "alive" but obviously it didn't require too much maintenance as that was what we wanted! Mackenzie Younger and Johnny Kunen converted our lawn into a pollinator meadow. The meadow is absolutely beautiful and full of life. So many bumble bees and honey bees and monarch butterflies and fire flies. I love to sit on the porch in the meadow and watch it teeming with life. Mackenzie is an artist. He designed the meadow and shared a sketch. He and Johnny then spent two days tearing up the lawn and installing the plants and a beautiful gravel path. As they were working, I asked them if they ever meditate. Mackenzie, paused from tearing up the Earth, smiled and said, this is our meditation. These guys love what they do.
