I was blessed to have been sent there by my parents "to straighten me out". It was truly, the best thing that ever happened to me... not that I thought I needed straightening out. St. John's created the environment where I could concentrate on the important on coursework and sports that I needed and/or enjoyed. We marched to breakfast, lunch and dinner. We marched to church (or were bussed to the church of our choice.) I attended for three years and it became the most important three years of my life. My Latin teacher taught me how to think and how to obtain my goals in life. I loved math, biology and physics. I was captain of the gymnastics team. It was an absolute positive experience. I graduated in 1959. I attended college (Engineering), then joined the United States Coast Guard. They sent me to US Navy Flight Training and I became a Coast Guard Air/Sea Rescue pilot for 7-years. United Airlines then hired me to fly for them. After 15 years with United, they brought me into upper management where I Worked and flew as a Flight Standards Captain, flying Boeing 747's around the world. I flew until age 60 (Mandatory retirement age back then), with over 20,400 hours of flight time. Thank you St. John's! You made that all possible. I have two younger brothers who also graduated from St. John's and they both were as successful as I was in adult life.

Driving to the Open House at TAA as a prospective family, my husband and I were really hoping to be…read moreunimpressed. I remember talking with him negatively about how far of a drive it would be for us every day (~35-40 minutes each way, twice a day). We talked about how important it was to us that the school was Christian, but how we would still need to sign our son up for classes at our church to receive the Catholic sacraments. We also talked about how ready we were to start our homeschool journey, to spend all our time with our children, and to not be tied to any sort of school calendar. We thought we had everything planned, but yet, there we were, pulling into the parking lot on what we thought was a very off chance that our minds would be changed. We left the Open House that night knowing without a doubt that TAA was in our future. It is so boldly different than its public and private contemporaries in many important ways. We were already well-versed in the philosophy of education of the school, but at the Open House and classroom visits, we got a glimpse of how this philosophy is carried out: The children are gently trained in habits that will serve them for life: attention, obedience, respect, truthfulness, self-control, to name a few. They spend time in nature and with rich literature, and not with technology. They learn to work with their hands and to do detailed and thorough work. They learn to work side-by-side with their peers, and how to delight in this work. They are not tested on facts, or asked to do poster projects or dioramas to synthesize information. Rather, they are assessed by how much they can tell back about what they've learned, and they share it eagerly with their teachers. Each teacher has the attitude of "It's good to be me, here with you," and the atmosphere of joy in the school is palpable. What's more, the school meets 3 days a week and the other 2 days are spent at home, with parents as co-teachers implementing lesson plans provided by the faculty at TAA. Needless to say, we were thrilled about everything we saw. Now, having had our son in school at TAA for a semester, I can truthfully say that it just keeps getting better. We have been able to witness how the school comes together as a community to pray and to support one another. We have been able to attend field trips that have exposed the children to art and culture. We have seen how meaningful the activities are that are stacked and packed into each day. Students are encouraged to lean into their struggles, and the teachers really come alongside the students to show them how capable they are of perseverance. Everyone brings fresh perspectives to the table, and challenging viewpoints are welcome not only amongst students, but also parents and faculty members. Honestly, I could go on and on and on. Completely worth the drive, and the extra sacrament classes, and the expensive spring break plane tickets as opposed to traveling whenever we wanted had we gone the homeschool route. If you take one thing from this review at all, it should be this: Even if you think you have everything planned out, GO TO THE OPEN HOUSE. Visit the classrooms. I can't tell you how glad we are that we did.

When he moved to The Augustine Academy, he was exposed to rich content, great books and big ideas, while surrounded in an atmosphere of joy. The staff truly partners with parents to build positive learning habits in students. We've enjoyed the home days as opportunities for us as parents to help form character and spend purposeful time together, a gift I don't take for granted in our world today! We've shared our experiences with friends, and I've seen many families fall in love with schooling at The Augustine Academy. They are taking donations on their facebook page with proceeds going to their school. Otherwise it's totally free to visit. It's advisable to bring your own small ladder to get some cool shots. We were lucky enough to use someone elses. We also had our daughter take some shots off the roof of our SUV. Supervised of course. It was about 35 minutes from Milwaukee and the views are pretty awesome. They ask that you don't cross the ropes and some have damaged the sunflowers immediately in the first few rows carving smiles or other symbols on them. The sunflowers themselves range from under 5 feet to over 8 feet which is why I recommend a ladder. It was a nice country drive and a chance to get some fresh air. We really enjoyed visiting.

This was our first venture into Soul Fire, and I took my 7yo granddaughter who is a wanna-be…read moreartist. We chose the Glass Fusing for a new experience and it was a hit! We made an appointment ahead of time and as soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by a lovely woman who spent good time explaining to us just how to safely work with glass, and not get cut or hurt in any way. The instructions are very in depth but necessary. When is was time to start the creative process, my granddaughter knew just what she wanted to create and loved selecting all the parts to make it just as she wanted. Start to finish was about 190 minutes, but it could be faster or slower, depending on how your creative juices flow. In the end she was thrilled with her project and we sprayed it to keep it in position for the transfer to the kilns. In 7-10 days I will return and pick up the final project. Our final cost for a 6" square art piece came to $40. We can't wait! The cost is not super cheap, but you know exactly what you are paying before you start. The supplies are endless and we plan to return for other activities as soon as possible. We saw entire families enjoying themselves, and this is a great activity to do with all ages, young children to adults. The options for art projects are: Paint Your Own Pottery, Glass Fusing, Acrylic Paint Projects and Board Art. The Clay Hand Building is now offered only in a class session. Stop in and take look. Then make an appointment for some really nice fun.

Made ourselves a date night for some Christmas memories. I wanted to do some glass work. We…read morewere greeted at the door by Morgan. She was so helpful through the whole process. We decided on Christmas tree ornaments. Morgan got all our working tools and was very thorough in explaining how to cut the glass and told us if we needed any further help she would be happy to help. We then were able to create at our own will and speed. It was a Friday night at the end of the day and we were told to take our time and not feel rushed. You can order drinks to enjoy. The atmosphere was so comfortable and warm. You could paint or do pottery. So many things. I think we just started our new tradition to make a new ornament yearly. We had booked some open creating time. But you can register for any of the classes they offer as well. We will definitely be back. Everyone was helpful and kind. Can't say enough good things about the whole process from start to finish. Took about 7 days to have the project fired and ready for us to pick up. Our ornaments are beautiful on our tree.
