The wait was a little long to begin but other than that everything was great! The stylist was awesome and the ambiance was on point.

I really tried to avoid this, especially when trying to support a black owned business but here we are smh. I have had the absolute worst experience with NappStar NYC at the Waldorf, MD location. I went in for a wash and retwist and sat over three hours after being washed to get styled. Once in the chair, the stylist did not do my hair as I asked and while there were some parameters around why she couldn't twist it the way I wanted, my style pictured did not match what I wanted.... I mean ... it was a bun ... how hard is it to do a bun?! I couldn't sit under the dryer because I had already been there 5 hours and needed to go to work. I requested to speak to the manager who, instead of speaking to me, directly told her stylist "This is just where we are right now", and then further instructed her to stop doing my hair to wash another clients hair who had just arrived 10 minutes prior. Said stylist did not stop my hair because she herself felt as if that was not the right thing to do. Despite being there 5 hours, being completely ignored by the manager, even at check out, I STILL tipped 20%. This doesn't end here... I attempted to reach out to customer service, in which they OFFERED TO REDO MY HAIR. When I requested a different day, I was given the run around. There is no direct phone number, instead they have a customer service person that takes all of their calls. All this week I have been promised a call back in which never happened. I instead had to repeatedly call back every day this week to get answers, which ended up mostly being put on hold. Here is what's wild about this whole story: Napstarr's solution went from offering to redo my hair, to the manager questioning what was wrong with my style , to yesterday, telling the costumer service representative that now they can no longer redo my hair. The reason being was because the stylist that did it is not available and on top of that is not offering any refunds. How you go from offering a redo of my style to nothing at all, is absolutely terrible business. I've requested several times to speak to the manager directly, talk to a supervisor, even atleast an email address in which I'm being told that there isn't any of these options available smh. As a customer, I am left with nothing but an incorrect hairstyle, time wasted, and no option to get a refund or ANYTHING. I mean atleast offer a discount , a free product, or at the least AN APOLOGY?! As much as I have spent monetarily and verbalized praises about this business to others, this is really disheartening. Especially when it's to support a black owned business. I am not letting this go easily. Whether I need to report this business or get in touch with the CEO somehow, I am NOT letting my over $200 service go to waste. NappStarr Waldorf, do better by your people. read more

Let me start by saying I leave good reviews often This is first negative one I've had to leave and I'm heartbroken. I went to Nappstar thinking they believed in taking care of the client but I know now they're just about making money to open up more locations. I booked an appointment for microlocs. I even did a consultation I was specific in what I wanted but here I am a year later taking them out. My stylist was a lovely young lady but these are not microlocs. They were started from 2 strand twists. Initially I liked them as I couldn't see anything wrong. After about 6 months into it I noticed the back felt more thick and like traditional locs. I've had traditional locs before so I know the difference. The grid was off because I went elsewhere for a consult for them to confirm that my hair was different sizes. The front is small, the middle medium, and the back large. What's crazy is this isn't an item I can return, this is MY HAIR! It's disheartening, as a hairstylist you are supposed to deliver the service paid for. You are to care for the clients crown, they trust you to give them what they asked for and what they paid for. To have a black and brown owned company that's treating black and brown customers this way is majorly disappointing. I won't be going back and I won't recommend them to anyone I care about. UPDATE: I went to speak to a manager to express my discontent. I knew that nothing might come of it but I would've liked to be acknowledged. The manager told me I had 2 different type of hair which is pretty normal for most black people. I was told no 2 microloc installs look the same. When I expressed that I have seen quite a few that had standard grids and uniform sizing there was no rebuttal. I was told a wash and retie would rectify the situation. I'm sad this was my experience but I'm writing this review so people don't go through what I did. read more

I've been here twice now so now I can give it a fair assessment. My first visit was overwhelming. It was Easter weekend and it was very busy. It was way too much happening. I couldn't remember the names of the people who washed and retwisted my hair. Their card machine was down so I ended up having to use the card I made the deposit with even though I didn't want to and i couldn't send myself a receipt to see what I was being charged for my style. I was annoyed and my anxiety didn't want me to come back but I couldn't deny how well my hair turned out so I gave it a second try. This time, I came on a less busy day. Both times, the staff were extremely friendly. I believe Serenity washed my hair and she did an amazing job. Great water temperature and she scrubbed my scalp so good that it felt so clean and all the itching stopped. Kristin retwisted my hair and brought it back to life. I do have some breakage but she said it's not bad. She just suggested I swap the aloe Vera juice in my rose water spray mix for some oil. The salon is very cute and clean, I love the music they play, and the staff's desire to make customers feel comfortable. They provide baskets for your belongings and this visit, they had an assistant that walked around and offered the customers water. Overall, I love this place. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the services and styles are a little pricey. My first visit, I just wanted 4 barrel braids on the top half of my head so I could just pull my top locs back into a ponytail. 4 barrel braids that took less that 5 mins turned my $85 bill into a $138 bill. I may consider a service like deep conditioning in the future but I think I won't be getting any style unless I have a special function to attend. read more

I was styled by DK, who by the way was so sweet, patient, and friendly! We weren't sure which style to do at first, but she said, "You come up with a look and I'll come up with a look, and we'll put our heads together." I loved that teamwork energy--and she ended up creating an amazing freestyle look! I trusted her vision completely and I wasn't disappointed one bit. She was gentle the entire time (no rough hands here!) and made the experience relaxing and fun. Everyone in the salon was so warm and welcoming, which is honestly hard to come by. The owner was even present during my appointment--offering helpful tips and guidance to each stylist--and I really admired that level of care and leadership. Since getting my hair done, I've gotten so many compliments--even from kids! If you're looking for a stylist who listens, collaborates, and truly delivers, please visit this shop and ask for DK! I'm weary of writing this because I believe that all of the stylists and workers deserves 5 stars. However, I'm writing this review from the POV of the system which deserves a 3 stars, so I landed on 4. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Special shoutout to Abel and DK. Each time I came, Abel was the one person to address me while waiting both times. DK also saw the "I've been waiting for an hour" in my face and jumped in to help. The two of them retwisted my hair in probably 30 minutes or less which was a record time for me. My stylist Kristen finally came in after the retwist to do my hairstyle and she did a great job. So again, I'm not writing this review to bash staff, I'm addressing the system. TIME: I walked in once to get a scalp treatment. I loved it so much that I decided to come back to get my hair done. I booked a 5pm appointment and I didn't get washed until about 6:15pm. My stylist was very busy, still working on someone else's head. She didn't get a chance to check in with me, so two other workers came to assist me and ensured me that she was coming. One washed my hair and then two people stepped in for my stylist to start my retwist at 6:45ish and finished my retwist at about 7:15ish. However, when it was all said and done, I didn't leave until about 9pm. While everyone was nice, worked as a team, and made me feel welcome, I had no desire to be there listening to dancehall for 4 hours. I would suggest leaving a little time between clients so that the stylist can have a food break and all of that on their own time. I'm very sympathetic to the workers, but again, no desire to be there for 4 hours. PRICE: $80 for a retwist isn't terrible. However, I added a style later and it came to $180 total for a retwist and style. Those are individual braid prices and should never be charged for locs. I only have 77 locs and they are medium sized, so I'm not sure why I paid the same amount as some others who had smaller locs. Though my stylist did a really good job, I may not return because $180 for a retwist and style is kind of crazy. My stylist ensured that it may not last a month, which is how long I'm used to my retwist lasting. So $180 and not a guarantee that it would last more than 2 weeks wasn't reassuring. Again, this is no shade to the workers, but the system. I will end this by thanking DK, Abel, and Kristen for their work on me. I'm happy with the style. read more

It saddens me to have to write this but I believe from looking at a previous review it needs to be corrected and addressed. There is a lack of accountability and courtesy when it comes to respecting ppls time. My first 2 appts were fantastic, my appt on 6/29th I came in for a 10a and left at 7pm!!!!! I'm assuming an error happened in the scheduling system because why else would they book 2 time extensive appointments for the same stylist only 30mins apart. No one ever explained to me or apologized about what happened except for the stylist who was extremely nice and this was no fault of her own. She literally was on her feet from 9:30 when I arrived until I left with no breaks. No one attempted to help her there was a point in time I was just sitting in a chair for 2-3 hours just looking bc she had to finish her previous client. I understand mistakes happen but no one looks at the schedule beforehand and then atleast give me the option to reschedule or come back later? No they started on my hair then put me aside for 3 hours until it could be finished. AGAIN this is no fault of the stylist I even gave her a tip bc she was just as stressed as me. I cant believe no one even tried to assist with me and just let me sit with my hair 1/2 done for 3 hours I really liked this place and thought I found my reg loc maint. here but respect is big for me as it should be for you. read more

Really love the esthetics of the salon and service at the front door. But I was concerned about the shampooing of my hair. My homegirl came a few weeks back and said that the back of her locs were not washed properly. When I came I had the same experience. The stylist only washed just the right and left side of my hair. Never put the hoses to the back of my hair at all for just the water. She never scrubbed or put the shampoo back there either. Didn't feel like a good was at all. My best friend is a licensed cosmetology and her and I both studied cosmetology in high school so we know how shampooing is supposed to go. We both washed our hair before coming just in case this was an issue. Hopefully this is addressed with the stylists immediately because we would love to find a home loc service. read more
