There is a volunteer on each of the 2 floors and a short video about the 1980's retrieval of a shipwreck from the late 18th century not far off the coast. Donations and comments are appreciated. There were some beautiful carved decoys - many with "best in the world" blue ribbons. They had a scavenger hunt with a sticker reward for finding all the things on the clipboard. Some beautiful murals, lots of old photos of the area and boats; and a gift shop with great books, toys, jewelry, and gifts. I got my Mom a hand carved humming bird by a local artist.

We stood outside, taking photos as we did not want to interrupt any businesses or homes nearby. Great history. It was absolutely one of my favorite things about my trip to Chincoteague. This museum did all the things I think a great museum should do - invoke an emotional connection, educate and spark a curiosity to learn more. I was looking forward to visiting Misty in all of her taxidermy glory but she was just one of many heart-warming exhibits. Other than Misty, some of my favorite artifacts were the oyster plates, the toll calculator machine, a model of the steamer Chincoteague and the old mail sorting desk. I enjoyed the stories about the Chincoteague citizens too like Kirk Mariner, a local minister, historian and writer and Miles Hancock, a master decoy carver. Something that brought a smile to my face was the video or the citizens giving their first hand account of the 1962 Ash Wednesday storm. I'm so glad someone took the time to record those stories about the devastating storm. The people feature in the video are very endearing. There is much to learn at this museum like how chicken farming got its start and how seafood has played a major part in the economy. I didn't know much about the legacy of Misty so it was sweet to read more about the goals that followed her lineage. At $4 for an adult, I felt like this was a terrific way to spend and hour or so.
