Our first aide gossiped about the other veterans she helped. Our second aide spent copious amounts…read moreof time using her phone. We are generously granted eight hours a week by the VA. For whatever reason, scheduling continues to be an issue with this company. I find myself repeatedly ringing to inquire if (I mean that, IF) someone has been identified to come help my Dad when the the assigned aide cannot come. There are peculiar communication protocols in place. Here's an example that will leave you scratching your head. We were switched to a new aide when the heavy phone user left. My Dad had two appointments scheduled months back at the VA. Realizing the new aide's schedule conflicted with my father's appointments I rang Utopia. I rang Utopia after speaking to the aide. She said I needed to ring Utopia. Fine. I speak to the coordinator at Utopia and I'm told: - Cancel the 2nd appointment of the day (The aide probably won't be able to do such a long day.) - Once I cancel the appointment, schedule the disabled bus service - Once the bus appointment is made call Utopia - Utopia will ask the aide if she can accompany Dad to his appointment - As the trip will go over the daily allotted time the extra hours will be subtracted from Dad's weekly eight hours Yeah, so I do all that. More than a week passes. But I follow their guidance. Utopia finally speaks to the aide. (AFTER I CALL THEM TO REMIND THEM.) The aide has a family and could never conceivably work those hours. Can Utopia find a fill-in aide to come a different day of the week? NO. So I find myself on Friday after Thanksgiving ringing Utopia. The coordinator had agreed to call "close of business" Tuesday to advise who would be coming Wednesday or Friday. It's Friday a little after 1pm. There isn't anyone on the schedule. I've been promised by the person answering the phone the primary coordinator will ring to 'resolve this'. But as I said to Utopia, it shouldn't be my responsibility to keep track of scheduling. What if I wasn't able to ring? What if it was just my father? I honestly don't think anyone would show. They are somewhat disorganized as a company. The phone using aide used to gripe about them alllll the time. I can see why now.

An update! The Aide that left me/her company in the lurch (job abandonment) showed up to my house…read morethe following day. I told her I already ended the contract w/the company. She said her boyfriend's car got impounded, so she decided to stay home (but never called the agency directly). I sent her packing and called the agency to ask the same on-call person (who said I would have no help all weekend) why she would send this irresponsible person to my house unannounced AND after I ended the contract. She said the Aide apologized last night via voicemail, so she let her come to my house. I asked why she didn't call to inform me this morning. She said she was busy and forgot! So Monday 9am, I talked to the caseworker (Mrs. H) and mngr (Christine?). They offered a bunch of apologies. They said the 'emergency/on-call person is supposed to call for additional assistance if they can't find an aide (a sorry excuse, if the emergency person does not know basic procedure). I made it clear that I have extensive experience in healthcare management, and I know how many mistakes were made in the handling of my case--their service is abysmal. I made it clear that I would pursue my complaint with the MLTC that same day, and there was no chance to continue my Mother's contract of service. I severed ties immediately. A WEEK LATER ON THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY (12/9) while I was working with an Aide from the new agency, there was a ring at my bell. It was my regular Aide who just returned from vacation. NO ONE AT 'HOME SWEET HOME/CATHIE'S CAR/NYHC' told her what happened, or that the contract was terminated!! They let her take TWO buses to my home for ME to tell her that the agency failed us both again and stood us up with no coverage while she was out. Once she left, I contacted the on-call person (a different woman from last week, more knowledgeable) and told her EVERYTHING that had taken place up until today. She was astounded. She said there was no information left on the case record showing they had lost my account. I told her I called the MLTC on Monday after I spoke to her manager (Christine), and the MLTC had the Medicaid paperwork completed and the new agency/Aide assigned by the Wed or Thurs. This poor communication had to be her manager's fault. I left word that Home Sweet Home is clearly negligent in their training, paperwork AND procedure and have no respect for the few good Aides they may have in their employ. Of course, I never heard back from the manager. As stated--I have experience in healthcare. I can honestly tell you, this is 'keystone cops' type of behavior. I have never seen so many errors in handling a simple case. No one likes to be a victim of someone's job abandonment, but what blows my mind is the obvious poor screening and hiring practices, as well as poor training and communication clearly evident in my case. MULTIPLE, EGREGIOUS errors. I never saw such terrible mismanagement of a routine case in my 12 years in healthcare. If they are this clueless on a day-to-day, what happens in serious situations? Inexcusable!

We (as a family) moved Grandma to The Bristal of East Northport from Huntington. The Bristal was another bad choice because the facilities were superb, the nurses were awesome, but the staff was rather poorly trained (e.g., Grandma's hands were not clean after they toileted her on several occasions. Ugh.) Thank GOD we found McPeak's Assisted Living in Patchogue! At McPeak's, the nurses, the staff, and the manager (Jennifer) treated Grandma like family! WE were able to visit Grandma EVERY DAY, so (as her family) we NOTICED EVERY LITTLE DISCREPANCY! We had eyeballs "on the scene" wherever Grandma wound up. We were going to find the BEST place for grandma if it took us forever to do so! No assisted living facility where Grandma stayed (e.g., The Bristal, Olsen's Rest Home, Huntington Hills Rehab, Christian Fellowship in Syosset, Central Island Health Care) even COMPARES to McPeak's of Patchogue! If you CAN visit your loved one EVERY DAY, you'll probably see things you can't even imagine. We did! We kept moving Grandma around until we found McPeak's. Okay, do bad things sometimes happen in probably all assisted living facilities? Yes, this is probably true. But CONSISTENCY MATTER! McPeak's CONSISTENTLY loved and properly cared for Grandma! You cannot ask for anything BETTER than that! GOD rest Grandma's soul! McPeak's made her final memories of family visiting her and loving her well worth our moving her from facility to facility until we finally found McPeak's Assisted Living!
