A Portuguese restaurant in Leigh? What a find this place is! Located at the bottom end of Railway…read moreRoad, its easy to park in the surrounding streets. The restaurant is quite small, so booking is essential, and booking for a Saturday is required a few weeks ahead. A friendly welcome awaits in this family run business. I noticed that most diners were drinking Sagres or Super Bock, but I had taken a bottle of wine as BYO is also allowed for a modest corkage fee. My friend and I ordered 2 starters to share between us, the cod fishcakes and the sweet potato garlic bread. Both were really delicious, the fishcakes were exceptionally delicious and so fresh and were served with a home made tartare sauce which must be the nicest I ever tasted. The sweet potato garlic bread was quite heavy, though delicious and very garlicky, and perfect to share. For my main I had ordered a chicken and chorizo skewer. This was served on a suspended skewer above a pot of their delightful home made sauce. I also had a portion of chips and some rice on the side. The portion size was great for a hearty appetite, and the meat was so tender and tasty - and the sauce was full of flavour. I shouldn't have had a dessert as I was really too full, but I couldn't resist, I had the after eight cheesecake. In too many restaurants the desserts are a bit of an afterthought and something thats just grabbed from the freezer. Not so here, its obvious that as much effort goes into the desserts as in the other courses. Again, home made and very original, and as delicious as the rest. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Perola Do Mar, and I am sure that I will be visiting many more times in the future.

A carbon copy menu that matches Nando's with their own additions of Portuguese fish dishes was a breath of fresh air. Me and my friend simply couldn't resist a jumbo platter with sweet potato fries, garlic bread and rice. The chicken was certainly very tender and wet, which gives me great first impressions of this place, seeing as I rarely get a wet chicken at Nando's anymore. The marinade however doesn't quite live up to the infamous peri peri sauce but nevertheless, the spice adds a mild kick to my liking. I wouldn't recommend the extra hot sauce as I believe it to contain far overwhelmingly vinegar than chilli, I think the ingredients may need to be tweaked for that sauce. The sides were great and delivered as expected. One very big selling point is the price and the customer service is just as good. If you still have some space in your stomach, I definitely wouldn't mind going for some of their gelato as well! Would visit again

I was so relieved when the mystery of this place was solved... Semendo's popped up in the place of…read morea strange old betting shop that seemed to just... be closed one day. After months and months of the place being boarded up and cleaned, it was finally revealed to be a new eatery (specialising in Portuguese food) at the end of 2014. So, as you can see from the photos, it looks pretty darn smart. Big windows, nice wooden and metal signage and clear opening hours look pretty darn inviting (especially when you consider the alternative food shops are Greggs and Dhillons fish bar next to it). Upon entering, you will notice just how clean and inviting the interior is too. On Saturday (on our return from Pirate weekend at Alton Towers) we were starving hungry. With me being on Bootcamp currently, my foodie options are limited - but I AM allowed chicken (which this place specialises in). We were greeted as we walked in and popped straight to the counter to have a look at the menu. Now, this place is essentially an independent (but much tastier, in my opinion) Nando's. You can have chicken (to a range of different heats), steaks, salads and choose from their solid selection of desserts (including Italian gelato and cake). We opted for their "Half chicken and two sides deal" to split between us. As the chicken comes in quarters, Dan went for extra hot and I went for medium. I went for a green salad as my side and Dan chose Peri-peri chips. This was all made fresh for us while we waited and had a wander around the shop. They produce their own sauces and there are options for unlimited soft drinks if you choose to sit in. Our food was ready in about 10 minutes and we eagerly took this home to eat. Our meal cost us a very fair £8.50 for everything. The chicken was really tasty (and not that hot), but I was a little disappointed that my salad came with a dressing (even though this wasn't mentioned on the menu and I wasn't asked if I wanted it). I think this would be my only complaint. Service was great, food was good and the place was clean, friendly and inviting. If I wasn't so strict with my eating options, the salad dressing wouldn't be an issue - but word to the wise, ask for your salad without if you don't like creamy sauces.

Food wise, bit of a mixed bag: 1) Very good - Codfish (bacalao) patties - Cheese and spinach patties - Fish and shrimp croquettes - Stuffed peppers with minced beef and cheese - Chorizo flamed in red wine (I mean, it's just chorizo but it's hard to mess chorizo up) I would definitely have these if I went back and that would be a great meal. The first two in particular were excellent. 2) Fine - Batatas bravas (not bad at all, just not that memorable either) - Goat cheese wrapped in filo pastry (although others really liked this) - Salada di polvo (this was generally well received although not the best thing we had) - Gambas piri piri (not very spicy) - Tempera battered fried vegetables (these were a bit chewy, although I kind of liked that about them) 3) Not so great - Calamari (again, chewy) - Garlic bread Looking at the above it seems to me that the more Portuguese sounding dishes were generally the best, which is a pretty good sign. We didn't try any mains so can't comment on those, they're not that cheap though. Tapas were buy 3 get a 4th free the night we went, which was excellent value - between four our food was less than £12 a head and as you can see from the above we had a great range. Finally I didn't drink any alcohol but the Portuguese wine and port I understood was a bit rough!

Cafe Porto has a very homely feel to it because of its basic, rustic wooden chairs and tables, maps of Iberia on the wall next to photos of Liverpool and mementos from Portugal. The only thing that confused me was the Cuban music playing gently in the background. I couldn't wait to tuck into my smoked suasage and tomato tortilla but I will be honest I was expecting a wrap, forgetting that a Spanish/Portuguese tortilla consists of a potato and egg, quiche like slice. I was pleasantly surprised though as it was hot and delicious. The girls behind the counter did not seem dismayed by the quiet period as they kept busy preparing food for the evening menu and as I waited to place my order it was good to see the home made food being prepared in the modest, almost domestic like kitchen.

The Cafe itself is light and friendly and in the summer months has a small outdoor seating area which can be a nice place to watch the world go by whilst you enjoy your meal. The food is also light and refreshing with home made humous, salads paninis and other sandwiches as well as a variety of other foods. All of these are reasonably priced and I would recommend the Greek salad with its' delicious feta cheese priced at £4.95. Everything within Cafe Porto seemed authentic and real, it was as though there was real passion in the food and they made a fan out of me straight away. They also provide a catering service with the executive package having great variety and still only costing £8.95 per person which is fantastic for what you recieve. Visit Cafe Porto whilst you are in Liverpool it is a great little establishment which screams passion, care and above all flavour. So from breakfast to dinner you will not be let down, but my own personal recommendation would be a deliciously light lunch.
