I really had a good time slowing walking the aisles identify items and see how much they were. There are two major supermarket chains in New Zealand: Foodstuffs (New World, Pak'n'Save, FourSquare) and Woolworths (Countdown). This was the second grocery store we visited on our cruise tour through NZ, and this one was significantly bigger. It pretty much had every item a traveler or local would need, and the prices were comparable to US prices (once accounting for the currency exchange). There were also quite a few Asian specific items, ones that I would only find in an Asian grocery store in the states. My brother was searching for very high UMF Honey and he found the place where it would be...but they were sold out. One thing to note was that they clearly kept their eggs in the unrefrigerated section.

This is clearly the best farmers market in the Wellington area. It is both a Sunday morning…read moredestination for the locals and a place tourists come. You can hear a lot of languages and many people asking what to do with some previously unknown fruit. The market really is in two sections. One is the fresh fruits and vegetables. The other is a good food truck area. Shop carefully in the fresh section. First, the stands near the entrances tend to be more expensive than those inside. I think it is because they hope to catch folks who are browsing. Second, look carefully about how fresh things are. You can easily find items that look like they are a day or two away from rotting. I am guessing that these are items that didn't sell to local restaurants. But, if you look, you can avoid this trap. It is a good idea to bring your own bag, or even better, a backpack. The food truck section is a lot of fun. Many sandwiches, ethnic dishes and more. I suggest you walk down eyes entire row is trucks before deciding.
