If you are interested in authentic African food in a beautiful and unique environment, Im Herzen…read moreAfrikas is the place for you! Before I even get to the food, I have to talk about the atmosphere as it is truly special and makes you feel the African vibes. Everything seems to be interestingly shaped and carefully curated to fit the theme. There is even a little treehouse sort of elevated seating area and a part of the restaurant with sand on the floor. You just have to take a look for yourself. As for the food, it is really authentic style where you eat everything with only your hands. The menu is sort of limited, where you pick a handful of items to be served on a single large plate and shared. We got 3 kinds of beef, chicken, lentils, and white cabbage. They all had a good flavor, and some were quite spicy. It was served with lots of bread on the side, which was flat, soft, yet somewhat fluffy. The way to eat this is by grabbing the food with the bread (kind of like making a little wrap). It's 18 EUR per person, which is a decent deal. I also got the non-alcoholic "momo is back" cocktail (9 EUR), which was a mix of lime juice, grenadine, peach juice, and guava juice. It was tasty and served in a nice cup with garnish on top. The staff are friendly and helpful. We were able to get a table for two with no wait on a weekday night, but I know it can be quite busy at peak times. Overall, I had a great and unique experience at Im Herzen Afrikas and highly recommend it to anyone interested in trying some African food in Frankfurt!

I considered giving it another go before writing this, but I have concluded I will no longer eat off of their every day menu and will simply go there for the Saturday buffet (which I still think is better than Kenkey House in Sachsenhausen). The last time I was here I ordered a groundnut stew. It came out with the wrong protein, and the flavors were just off. It tasted like peanut butter. I like the subtle hints of peanuts throughout in this stew, but for the entire thing to just taste like peanut butter is a bit much. My boyfriend's food wasn't too appetizing either. The portions here are so large that it is really difficult to know where to start eating and it leaves me stressed because I can't finish it and the pounded yams don't hold well for leftovers. I don't know really what else to say except I am going to stop going here for meals unless it is buffet day for a while. I hope they can get their game back on track because I really like this place and its owner.

But when I realised that it's (mostly) Eritrean food, I was like "I must go!" because I adore injera, shuro, doro wat, and a host of other Eritrean/Ethiopian foods. In most places that I can find Injera at all, it's an Ethiopian restaurant. Finding an Eritrean place made it extra special, because I left my heart in Asmara. Is it authentic? You betcha! Did I recognise most of the names on the menu? Actually, no. Partly, that's because I don't speak German. However, the staff do speak English, so I was able to figure out what I wanted. It was a Sunday night, so the buffet was open, which meant that I could have everything I wanted (which was, well, everything!) The service was friendly and helpful, and the food was awesome. The one problem that I had was that the thermostat seemed to have been set to Massawa, rather than Asmara. So I was gasping by the time I got out of there. Still, I went home a very happy boy.

Best Vegan Meal all week!!…read more What a relief that there were probably 8-10 vegetarian options with most of them being vegan-clearly listed together on the menu. I ordered the Schiro which was like a chickpea puree with spices on the Ethiopian bread. It was one of the few spicy dishes listed. While I like things REALLY spicy, it was very flavorful but not 'hot spicy', and was just perfect even though I typically get more 'spicy hot' foods. My dinner was 6.55 euro. My friends got a sampler platter that included some vegan options. On their plate the vegan options were pleasant in presentation and tasted great! Nice portion sizes, decent prices for downtown. Quaint restaurant. Not sure why it was so hot inside, it was definitely warm. They were very busy for a weekday evening. We had a great time and if I am ever back in town, I will return for sure!
