Today was the first time I had been to Naganos. My wife and I went for a town hall with Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor. The servers did a great job considering they suddenly had a full house. I had the steak and shrimp with broccoli, and the wife had the chicken. Very good. The venue was very clean and nice. The egg roll app was delicious however, the tempura shrimp was kind of flavorless. There were huge chunks of shrimp, mushrooms, broccoli, and onions fried together, and oddly, they did not serve knives to cut the large pieces. The "side salad was a large portion of bagged lettuce and tasted so. The Chicken mushroom teppanyaki was nothing more than okay. The staff however was top notch. Friendly, fast and attentive. Well greeted as we entered and seated immediately. Moderately busy at 5 pm. Our server was attentive with drink orders as she sat us. Food order was submitted and arrived timely. The dumplings as an appetizer were delicious. We ordered three sushi rolls and were pleased overall. The only mention of minor negativity was the tempura on the American Dream Roll was very thick which muted the overall taste of the sushi roll. Easily addressed by removing it. It has been years since I have been and I will admit I have missed it. I got a quick to go order for lunch today of the dumplings and an order of shrimp tempura for my daughter. Service was fast and the price was good for what we received. Tasted amazing, and hit the spot!!! I will definitely have to do a dine in lunch soon! We were totally shocked by the behavior of the woman who apparently is the owner of Nagano Japanese Restaurant 1226 Conover Blvd Conover NC 28613. My wife is Gluten allergy, the waiter we had was nice enough, he seemed unsure about Gluten though. We were working with him to try to get something my wife could eat. Suddenly a small Japanese lady comes storming out to our table with a menu, at first we thought she came to help us. Her accent was so heavy some of what she said was hard to understand; also she was raising her voce louder and louder. "Maybe you need to not have come here" "You should had studied before you came here" are phrases I caught, she was very rude and demeaning to us. My guess is she is accustomed to getting away with cutting people apart like that. She was asking us to leave. Our poor waiter didn't know what was going on, Of course we just made tracks out of there before things escalated out of hand, we were not going to hang around and be treated like that. On the way out I saw our waiter coming in from the back, he had not heard any of the yelling I don't think. Looking from the outside this place looks good, however at 6pm the parking lot was not so busy.that was my first clue.After entering and being seated I noticed there was no Asian clientele. This was my second clue. After looking over the menu I did not see so I enquired if they had Sashimi. They did not. I ordered a salad with ginger dressing and sushi. The dressing was not the traditional ginger dressing you get from a Japanese restaurant. Not exactly sure what it was but is was a reddish color. The sushi was very small just barely covering the rice. The wasabi was the type that appeared to come from a squeeze tube. The sushi was very so so. The shrimp was either grilled or torched then placed on rice as sushi. That is different from any I've had before. The eel was a bit mushy. My honest opinion is 3 stars is generous. This place could use some traditional Japanese changes to the menus and focus on high quality over low price. The meal I had was inexpensive but I was looking for high Japanese quality and great sashimi. In both cases I was mostly disappointed. This has been a staple in the Hickory/Conocer area with the two locations, and ever since the closing of the Viewmont location the Conover one is the last bastion of the chicken teriyaki and sweet carrots (from Nagano's, anyway). Food is consistently good, drive thru is quick and table service is very friendly. Overall a good quick meal and you can definitely understand how they've survived. read more

Nagano is some of the best Japanese food in Catawba County. They have a huge sushi selection and personally the Udon Noodle Soup with chicken or shrimp is my favorite. There's enough soup for 2 people and I like to order a side of bok choy so that I can put more into my soup. The tapanyaki steak is another favorite of mine. Good... for the area. Nagano's is not the kinda place where you find entirely legitimate Japanese food. Rather, it's the kind of place where you get Americanized, but no less tasty, Japanese food. It isn't particularly healthy, authentic, or varied, but it is pretty solidly good. Ordered 3 sushi rolls from here that were considered specialty rolls. They came out looking like basic sushi rolls that you can get for $5 each normally. It also took 50 minutes for them to make the sushi! Pictures is the Tiger roll. Barely any sauce and not what I pictured as an imperial roll. It was very bland and the scallops were very chewy and such a small piece you couldn't taste it. All of the rolls were very bland and lacked flavor. Nagano restaurant chain (2 stores now) has been around since I was in high school (over 10) years. Much hasn't changed besides placewares and an upgraded location, both of which has excellent ambiance. It is a great hybrid between fast food and sit down restaurants. Typical wait times between ordering and arrival of food is less than 5 minutes. Most of it is prepared in large quantities in the kitchen and arranged on a plate as ordered. This doesn't work well with ordering appetizers (soup, salad, eggrolls), since there is no concept of staggered times for bringing out food unless you ask. Most of it sits on the table, making a little hard at times to get to all the food you ordered. Always great food, with expanded choices this last year, including Hawaiian chicken. I agree the prices for combo near dishes is too pricey for the quality. The basic dishes come with rice, sweet carrots, your meat choice, one vegetable and choice of sauce. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, well priced meal. read more

Great place for a quick lunch. The waitresses were very helpful and friendly. The teriyaki chicken combo we great! It came with the biggest serving of fried rice I've ever had.
