What a fabulous experience and way to slow down amid the busy Christmas markets and shopping!!! Definitely get a reservation--as I don't know how walk-up seating would have gone. You can also always walk-up and buy waffles and other pasteries live at the counter! We enjoyed a little bit of everything, but my favorite was a Chocolate Ganache dessert! We also got eclairs, waffles, coffees, and everything was worth it!

Pricey desserts that look good and tasted ok. Macroons are double the place next door with similar taste. Chocolates are nothing special. Long lines to get in. Wine, beer, tea, coffee and soda.

Must visit this place for their waffle made from Madagascar vanilla! It comes in many types of fillings but I prefer chestnut. I also bought cakes to take away. It's very tempting because I LOVE french pastries and cakes.

This patisserie spans two shops with a middle entrance between the two shops (one selling cakes and pastries, and the other chocolates) leading into two tea rooms, which was lovely and relaxing. The service is very quick too Unfortunately, as our train was delayed 3 hours on the way to Lille, and we already had lunch on arrival, and then a snack of churros and vin chaud at the Christmas market , I really did not have any more room to eat anymore, but my partner wanted to visit here before leaving for our train home. So I managed a hot chocolate which came in a heavy silver jug, which you pour into a tea cup, enough for 3 cups! My partner had the tea complete which consisted of a silver pot of ceylon tea and two doorstop thick toasted brioche with butter and strawberry jam. I tasted a mouthful of the brioche with the jam and it was delicious. We were also given two pieces of chocolates in the shape of a snowman and santa. The chocolate tasted like dark chocolate, very strong, how I liked it, so absolutely yummy! The total bill came to €15 which I thought was very reasonable for the ambiance and quality. You paid at the cashier outside, who seemed to remember what you ordered.

Meert is a must-see when you are in Lille. Meet is well-known because of their wafers filled with sugar, butter and vanilla from Madagascar called Gaufres. I bought some cute little boxes as a souvenir. Be aware that these Gaufres must be consumed within 8 days. Personally, I thought these Gaufres were okay, nothing special. The filling is sweet and sugary and the wafers have a chewy texture. The shop itself is tiny, quaint and kept it's old-style charm. There's also a luxurious looking tearoom next to the shop, but you'll probably need to book a table, because it looked crowded.

Meert is the typical place where you have to forget about your diet and go for it. It's the oldest in France and probably the World and it's fame is well deserved. The cakes are eye catching and all the decoration is lovely. Meert is two shops and a salon de thé where you can eat their lovely desserts. Coffee and cake cost around 10-12€, but you have to try them, delicious.

The displays in the shop were lovely, the tea room visible from the front looked gorgeous, and the guidebooks had all recommended Meert. Unfortunately, my experience was a very disappointing one. I was seated to the rear of the patisserie, in a sort of conservatory. The room was pleasant but my table hadn't been wiped. I asked for this to be done when I ordered (it was visibly dirty); but still had to ask the rather uninterested staff a second time. The cursory whisking of a cloth removed the worst but the table was still by no means clean. The serviette was dumped on top of a remaining left-over drip of something, but wasn't replaced. This was the sort of service I wouldn't appreciate in a burger bar, let alone an expensive patisserie. When the people on a neighbouring table clearly didn't understand the specials rattled off at top speed, there was no attempt by the waiter to repeat or clarify. The tea was fine, and came with two chocolates; the famous gaufre was incredibly sweet - not really my taste, but nicely done. Service continued to be rather mediocre: most of the waiters were apparently indifferent to the experience of their customers. Pretty as this patisserie is, I got the sense that in terms of service, the place is rather resting on its laurels. I would have enjoyed it more had I bought a few cakes to take away.
