This is one of my favorite new arrivals in Hamburg in the past couple of years. It's a perfect place for a nicer-than-usual work lunch, or a dinner date. The space is beautiful, the staff is attentive, and the food is delicious. It's not cheap, but it's one of the few restaurants where I feel like I can get consistently well-prepared meals that aren't tremendously expensive.
I don't know the backstory, but I get the sense that Mutterland (a local cafe chain) took over the space of what must have been a very elegant restaurant, and did a very tasteful job of updating it for the 21st century. The dining rooms are all separated, which makes the ambiance a bit cozier than you get in most open-plan restaurants nowadays. There's some incredible tiling and other architectural details that make the space really special.
I would describe the menu as a mixture of classic Hamburg dishes like labskaus, and contemporary European dishes like salads and quiches. They have a cheaper lunch menu with smaller plates, and a more extensive dinner menu with more options. I've always enjoyed my meal and been satisfied. read more
