My son has been renting his violin from here for nearly a year. He kind of followed in my footsteps, because I too rented from here, at their previous location, many years ago. Although I rented a base guitar and not a violin, it was still an awesome experience at a very fair price. Actually my parents paid for it, and I'm pretty sure it was a fair price. Back in those days, they even offered private lessons, which I also took part in. I guess you could say that music runs in my family. My kid got a quality instrument and I could tell that it has been well-maintained. The folks here have also been super helpful, especially when it comes to advice on cleaning and tuning the instrument. I am glad that this company is still around. read more

I made the mistake of ordering some strings and amp tubes from here. I paid with cc. Now, YOUR BILLING DEPT HAS A ONE PENNY DESCEPANCY and is harassing me over THEIR ERROR. FOR ONE LOWSY PENNY! BEWARE!! Do not purchase from this company. I can only imagine the nightmare you would go through if you had a rental agreement with them. Also, the tubes were shipped separately from stings and looked as though they had been stepped on by warehouse or shipping company. We love the staff here at Music and Arts. They're music first, no sales pitches, and their enthusiasm just shines through. Recently, one guy (sorry I can't remember his name) helped my son think about ways to find some band mates, and practice playing in front of people. Then he pulled up on his phone a number of open mic band nights in the area that he recommends. It's definitely guitar and bass focused, but that was great for us. On 12/23/25 towards the end of the business day, I returned - with my receipt - an electric drum set to the store on Hard Scrabble Road in Columbia, SC where it was purchased from the week before. I was told the store didn't have the cash to give back to me so I offered to return the next day to pick it up. However, when I went back to get my refund on CHRISTMAS EVE, I was told that refunds higher than $50 would have to be in the form of a mailed check from their corporate headquarters. Why didn't they say that the day before? They acted like they just needed to go to the bank or something. This could have ruined Christmas for my children had it not been for a good samaritan who loaned me some Christmas money. I called corporate headquarters on January 5, 2026 to inquire about the refund check & the guy on the other end of the line refused to get me to a supervisor & he couldn't even verify if our check was mailed yet or not. This company is HORRIBLE & I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH MUSIC & ARTS!! I am STILL trying to speak to someone higher up that can get my refund to me ASAP!! Stopped by recently to purchase a guitar for a new player. We received excellent customer service from Aaron and Kevin. They patiently walked us through the different options, providing information on what to look for, etc and answered all of our questions. Kevin even provided a mini-lesson! It was a wonderful buying experience, and Aaron and Kevin were deserve recognition for their exemplary customer service. Non-existent Billing department! We've been using M&A for the past 3 years and have had generally good equipment rental service. But as soon as we had a billing issue, as another user also experienced, you can expect nothing but headaches: you can never reach the billing department whether by phone or email. You can find more M&A billing issues on the BBB website. My billing credit card was closed due to a fraudulent charge, and all calls to the provide an updated credit card went no where - placed on-hold for HOURS! The local M&A store couldn't assist with updating the card on file either though they did provide the callcenter@musicarts.com email address... which never gets any response. My online account was updated with new payment method, but I was told this only works for online purchases... what? That's how rentals are placed! The only M&A person I was able to speak with was a COLLECTIONS representative after they left a voicemail. Collections picked up my call immediately!!! They were also able to update my payment method. If you receive a late payment notice due to billing issues, call the collections office since they actually pick-up the phone and can update the information. Once you get through, pay attention to the total charges since they assess late penalties. Collections will acknowledge your billing frustration, but will not waive any late fees unless you tell them to. The collections number is not published anywhere on the M&A site, but it's 833-952-4609. M&A... get your act together. You've lost a music family customer as soon as this school year ends. read more

this a complaint about their billing department and how they conduct business when their system is not working.. long story short i turned in an instrument at the end or June beginning of July their system was down and i was given a hand receipt. we PCS (military family) and years. yes almost two years later i get a bill for over $900. Dear Owner, I am reaching out this way after exhausting all options of reaching out and to remediate the situation. I sincerely hope you can read and we come to a resolution. My daughter had signed up for euphonium lessons. And the first month included 5 lessons. We went out for our 1st lesson. The instructor didn't show up. The store manager told us to come back next week. We showed up for the 2nd lesson, the instructor didn't show up. The store manager himself makes up 2 lessons that day. And he told us he will be in different location, so we got 3 more lessons from him in other location. He then told us go back to our Springfield location. And the instructor doesn't show up again. So we wanted to cancel the lessons. And we had to call 1800 number. And they told us they already charged two extra months of lessons, and they can't be cancelled. They told us to talk to store. We go to store, and the new store manager said there is nothing he can do. And an employee knowing our situation talks to the manager, and the manager told us he will call back. And never gets a call back. We go back to the store. The manager is not there. The employee knowing our situation calls the "old" manager. He says we received all the lessons (we only received the first month's) and hangs up. The employee prints out from the system there are lessons we are eligible from the system. I call back 1800 numbers again. Trying to escalate. They said they are just agents. Nothing can be done that we need to talk to the store. Finally they say they will call back. Never gets a call back. I fill out a form and submit regarding our situation. Nothing. So, I call my AMEX to dispute those extra months. I get credit back. THEN I get the nasty billing mails saying that they sent our account to collection agency. I call the collection agency and explain my situation. THEN again, I get the nasty billing mail and IT INCLUDES COLLECTION agency fee. read more

This is a complaint about their billing department. I'm honestly too exhausted to provide every detail but the short version is their billing department needs a serious overhaul. Their customer service reps aren't on the same page. Each rep tells you a different thing. The credit card that I used to pay the monthly charge was hacked and I had a new card reissued. Of course this coincided with the billing date and a payment was unable to be processed even though I called to alert them and provide the new number. No phone call was received from them. The first notice I get is from their collections department. Yes, collections. I spoke to someone and they said they would reverse the late fees as a result of the situation and my attempts to inform. A month later, I discover "there are no notes in our system about this", you still owe these fees and your account is delinquent. I just wanted a zero balance at this point and had given up trying to get anything from them so I paid in full. Lastly, the last day of my daughters school year was 6/13 and my billing date was 6/10. I explained I would return the violin on 6/14 and they informed me that was ok because there was a 4 day grace period. Guess what? I return the violin and June's charge was on my account. I call and they say it's a 3 day grace period and "there are no notes that you were told a 4 day grace period". So I guess now I'm a liar. Ok. They say they will request a credit but can't guarantee. They never called me back to inform me of the status. I just called again and the lady cut me off and said "there is no grace period". I asked if I could please finish explaining so she was up to speed and she said "you can call back" and hung up. My daughter will need an instrument in the next few years and I will NEVER EVER EVER use Music & Arts. read more

Came in to buy guitars strings and Toma (Apple) was very welcoming and offered me to test out some guitars. Adam (Apple Bottom Jeans) walked me through each guitar and was very knowledgeable on every brand, how they sound, and where they are made. Great staff! I had an amazing buying experience! Instructor was good at teaching but unreliable. In two months of lessons, he rescheduled two virtual classes (one 30 minutes before class) and no-showed for one. Sometimes he'd send the supporting materials for what my daughter worked on so she could practice at home. Sometimes he sent part of it or none at all. He ignored most of my emails asking to make up missed classes and asking for materials. When you call Music & Arts to address it, they say he's an independent contractor and it's between me and the instructor. read more

One of my daughters took violin lessons at the Springfield location and loved it. My other daughter is currently taking guitar lessons and also loves her teacher (Caitlyn). Rates are competitive ($35 per half hour range in 2019). Once my kid forgot her guitar and the staff allowed her to borrow one of their display models. Both of my kids have gone on to participate in elementary and middle school music programs in part because good teachers have fortified their interests. The place itself has a decent selection of basic instruments, music and accessories. You can also rent instruments for competitive rates. read more

Two years ago started a lease on a Viola for my daughter's orchestra . Costumer service is always top notch . The staff are mostly musicians and is way easy to be guided on any concern by someone who KNOWS about it. They also sell instruments , most of them are displayed at the store. There's financing available which is great . Recently my daughter wanted to try piano besides the viola and the guitar and started taking lessons here , she is very happy with the teacher and method. Due to a computer system bug the store was unable to properly log an instrument we returned in July. The sales person issued us a hand-written receipt, but we still got an invoice from the company asking to pay for the instrument. A phone call to the Springfield store did not provide clarification; we gave them the date and serial number from the receipt but they were not able to locate the instrument. At this point the issue is still unresolved, after spending more than an hour trying to resolve it. We will definitely not go back to this store and would advise anyone not to rent from them. read more

We have been to this store a few times - each time to get started with a child on a new instrument for his/her school band or orchestra. I know NOTHING about music and have also made the choice to buy very inexpensive student instruments for the time being. Every time we have visited, customer service has been top notch. They are excellent at explaining to both adults and children about the instruments and they have never talked down to be because of buying the cheaper instrument. Though the "student" instruments are holding up quite well for now, we will definitely return to this location when it is time to upgrade. read more
