I began taking lessons at Joyful Voice last August as a return to practicing music after several years. In my initial search for a voice teacher, I considered several Arlington studios as well as others that offered online/video classes. I finally chose Joyful Voice due to their (Google) reviews and location and am so grateful that I did.
My first lesson was Judy was more educational that I expected - I learned about tendencies in my voice, my range, my sight-reading ability, and warm ups I could work on at home. Since then I have seen definite improvements in my breath support as well as vocal range, blending, volume, and confidence (one of my initial goals). I've also expanded my vocal theory and vocabulary - having little voice training/choral experience beforehand, I had a lot to learn. My lessons with Judy focus primarily on performances, including piano accompaniments for some songs. I have added 6+ songs to my repertoire and it was a treat to be able to share this new hobby when I performed a song in front of family and friends.
Judy is an excellent motivator and teacher. She is very observant as to my singing techniques, breaks down challenging parts into manageable steps, and always has different ways to describe something if I don't grasp the concept the first time. She is also very funny which makes each lesson a pleasure.
Lessons can be taught by either of the married duo though. I recommended a friend visiting from out of town to take a lesson with Matt. He agreed that during the lesson, he learned so much about his own voice and saw immediate changes following the directions Matt provided.
On a practical note, the online sign up and payment method is a breeze. Scheduling lessons is also easy and Judy is communicative and understanding if there is a hiccup in our regular times. read more
