A huge open air space surrounded by some of Amsterdam's best museums. A large reflecting pool lies at one end, right in front of the Rijksmuseum, and is a popular place for locals and tourists to hang out and enjoy the sunshine. Families and groups of young people were taking advantage of the greenspace, playing games. There are food stalls and small vendors in one area, and plenty of birds ready to steal whatever scraps of food they can! A really great outdoor space comprised of the I amsterdam letters and the 3 most influential and popular Amsterdam museums: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum. So, in other words, where you can knock out visiting multiple tourist destinations in one! Although we visited during the fall, when it was about 50 degrees, the area looked like an awesome spot to picnic and just lie on the grass when the weather was nice. It was a very relaxing area -- albeit surrounded by tourists. The space was very open and there were kids running around in the grass. If you love art museums as much as I do, you definitely have to come here. Several different museums within half a mile. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Diamant Museum are all here. Trams and buses stop here so, it's definitely easy to get to. Walking rom one museum to another is quite delightful. There's a walking path that connects all museums and grassy areas where people can just sit and do whatever. There are cafes and snack shops inside and around the museums. This area is a large open space in the museum district of Amsterdam. This is were you will find the large "IAMsterdam" sign with the long line of people waiting to run and get a picture without 1,000 other people int eh same picture. This area is also were you will find several food stands. One of which sells fresh hot stroopwafels, which is a dutch treat. I grew up hearing my grandfather talk about this treat and how much he loved it. You can find stroopwafles everywhere in the stores, but it is hard to find fresh ones. I was so happy to finally have found a place that serves them. I was not disappointed they were everything my grandfather told me they would be! read more

Nice place to relax and people watch. Who doesn't love an area surrounded by museums? Ok, fine maybe some people, but I loved it. There is the Van Gogh, the Stedelijk, the Rijksmuseum, and even some lesser knowns like the Diamond museum and the House of Bols. This is the area where people take their favorite I AMSTERDAM shots. There are sometimes fun festivals going on in the area too. At one point during our trip there was a roots festival so the area was swarmed with people. They had food stalls and a stage set up. Tons of things to see and do. When we were there, we saw a Miffy exhibition. There were a row of large painted Miffys that were going to be auctioned off later for Unicef. It was really cool. There is a ton of grassy area, so people can sit and relax. This area is one of the must sees of Amsterdam. read more

The Museumplein is one of my favorite places in Amsterdam. In summer you can lie down on the field, watching people play football, tennis or whatever, play with your dog, or just enjoy your freshly bought lunch from the Albert Heijn supermarket with the sun on your face (if youre lucky..). The skateboardpark and basketball field are very popular among students and tourists. In winters, this magical vibe appears, with morning fogs covering the field, the IAMsterdam sign, the iceskating rink filled with childern and young people, with the majestic Rijksmuseum on the background. During the whole year, mostly in summers, concerts / events are held on the Museumplein; for example on Queensday, Soccer trofees, Uitmarkt and charity events. During the winter you can have hot chocolate and the typically dutch poffertjes at the Old Dutch Poffertjeskraam! By night, a blue ray of light on the ground illuminates the field, going all the way from the wading pool to the Concertgebouw (orchestra concerts). The Monument to the woman of Ravensbrück (WW2, concentration camp) on the left side, plays a particular odd sound, making it breathtaking to watch and listen to. The museumplein is literally in the centre of Amsterdam, from here, anything is nearby. Great meetingpoint, perfect place to chill out, great view, and the 3 most famous museums just located on the quarter; The Stedelijk Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh Museum. read more

What a great people space flanked by the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concert building. It's a really nice large green space amidst the museums that beckons you to stay awhile. Just south of the Rijksmuseum is the "I Amsterdam" sign and an interesting long narrow pool with sculptures displayed within it. In addition there are several play spaces, a basketball court and a skateboarding area as well as the large green where you can play soccer, volleyball or frisbee. There is also an off leash dog area. It's a great place to read a book, lie in the sun or just hang out and chill awhile. There are several vendors there so you can buy souvenirs or something to eat or drink. read more

Lovely! I can only imagine how nice it would be in good weather, which I was not blessed with when I came here but it was still beautiful. Two of the best museums (according to most at least, not to me) in Amsterdam and the iamsterdam letters are what brought me here. I love the Museumplein. There is so much space! It never gets to crowded because there is just plenty of room for everyone. It is a great spot for a picnic as well if you buy your food at the Albert Heijn over there. The view at the museums is also lovely. The Rijksmuseum is truly beautiful and an amazing sight. The new Stedelijk Museum is very modern and a contrast but also fits in the whole picture perfectly. There are differant options if you want to sit on a terrace as well. There are a few food stands that sell sandwiches, hotdoggs and drinks and they have there own terraces. A good choice would also be the restaurant of Stedelijk Museum with the many seats, nice design and good menu. Museumplein has a very international feeling I think. It always reminds me of other European cities. It is a very beautiful piece of Amsterdam, loved by locals and tourists both, and great for a walk or to relax and hang out. read more

The big IAMsterdam sign, man. When I visited in February, there was an ice skating rink. When I visited in March, it was gone. Van Gogh Museum to one side, and the Rijjijkjkstacken or whatever on the other side. Good place to relax for a minute and take a picture with the sign. But don't expect to get a picture alone with the sign. There WILL be about eight strangers in the pic with you. read more

Nice big fountain to cool down in on a hot summer's day, big grass field with dogs playing around and of course the super amazetastic museums. Nowhere else in Amsterdam will you have this much space and be able to sit or stand as you like without five hundred people bumping into you. I love coming to this big place on a sunny day because there is always something going on. On this particular day, there was a rave going on in the park in the middle of the afternoon. Must see, but just hang out for a short time. We were lucky to visit the market which is there only once a month (every 3rd Sunday)! We bought their gorgeous gifts for our friends, leather card holder from the maker (Leatherlands) and cool silver earrings, and a ring for myself from also the maker (Perka design). There are some vendors who sell not necessarily their craft so be aware (especially when you buy jewelry). We also bought for my niece handmade little teddy bear :) read more

A definite must-stop while in Amsterdam. This is the large, open area where you'll find both the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum along with the famous "I Amsterdam" sign. It's free to wander around and take pictures of the buildings and the landscape but of course each museum has its own entry fee if you choose to go in. Always a lot of people around, especially on a nice day, so don't count on getting a picture in front of "I Amsterdam" alone. I love this park. It is so simple yet elegant. The wide open space is great for sports or to just take a lunch to and enjoy getting away from the city for a moment. It really does feel like you aren't in a busy city while you are there. It has a good vibe and of course all the museums surrounding it. The area is as beautiful as it gets. You have the famous 'I amsterdam' sign as well as three museums that are among the most famous in Europe and the world. I've been here in both the summer and winter seasons. In the winter, it's fairly chilly but summer is the best time to go. Museumplein. Just a short distance from Schiphol. That's something I love about Amsterdam - I can have a 7 hour layover and enjoy myself by not being all couped up in an airport. I will say that the last time I was here - 2008 there was a lot of construction going on. I went again in 2010 and now I'm seeing that there is a pool? Awesome! I like the addition. This is on the other side from the vondel park in Museum Quarter and although less busy, it has a lovely vibe and is the perfect relaxing place during those hot summer days. Kids skate on the skateboard ramps at the back of the park and it is the general walkway past the Van Gogh Museum and the Heineken Museum so you can, like the other guy says, just people watch all day. During the summer they have little stalls outside where you can get a drink or an ice cream. I love it here read more

While not really an attraction, it is very eye easy. It is a convergence of the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, The Stedlijek Museum and Concertgebouw. House of Bols is also nearby. We visited the area twice to go to the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum and it really is a nice area to sit and reflect on the culture you just absorbed. Many locals use the area for pet exercise and on one of the days we were there a dance event was taking place. As we walked form our nearby hotel, we noted this was a bit of a more upscale neighborhood as evidenced by the many BMWs and Audis that lined the streets. The area lends itself to many photo ops, particularly as you approach the museum (from the front and rear). Note the difference between the bucolic rear and the busy bustling front of the Rijksmuseum as well as the striking difference in architecture between the Rijksmuseum and th other two. Take a few minutes out of your busy day, pause and reflect before heading off on your next journey. read more
