Super awesome museum tucked into the mountains in Revelstoke, BC…read more Check out their website for current hours of operation depending on time of the year at www.railwaymuseum.com The museum was opened in 1993 with a mission to collect, preserve and interpret the history and significance of the Canadian Pacific Railway with our region. My kids had an absolutely fabulous time here climbing in and out of the huge trains cars and Engine (both inside and outside weather depending) and exploring all aspects of train life. They had a dining cart and living quarters open to walk through and get an idea of how things were run and just how small it was! There's a section aimed at younger kids with a train table and dress up play that also was a winner for our family. At only a couple dollars, the admission price is amongst the lowest of any museum I've ever been to in Canada. Just an FYI - There are no elevators here and stairs required to access different areas like the model trains. We will definitely be back!

For a local museum, the exhibits are pretty good. The main gallery walks you chronologically through history, starting with natural history and prehistoric fossils, leading into the rich living culture of the native syilx / Okanagan people. My favorite part of the museum was the model of a kekuli (the same name as the Bannock place nearby), which is the subterranean winter home used by the Indigenous people of the area. I also appreciated how candidly the exhibits covered the impacts of British settlement, detailing how colonial efforts aimed to bring in specific settler demographics, resulting in land displacement and a push to convert the valley into farmlands. The museum also does a great job highlighting other minority groups and their struggles, including a thoughtful segment on Kelowna's historic Chinatown and the artifacts salvaged before its demolition in the 1970s. It was so interesting to learn about the shift from early tobacco farming to the fruit and wine industry we see today. Upstairs, there was a neat feature exhibit touching on local history like the old Kelowna Regatta and how the massive festival ended after back to back riots in the 1980s. Tips for Visiting and Nearby Highlights: Military Museum: We wanted to visit the nearby military museum as well, but they are not open at the same times and are closed on Sundays, so be sure to check their schedule before you go. Parking: There is free parking in the garage right next door on Sundays. Nearby Spots: Don't miss the lovely Kasugai Japanese Garden located right behind the museum, and take a short walk down toward the waterfront where you will find the new Kelowna sign. Overall, a very informative and well curated stop for both tourists and locals.
