Sturmgeschütz III x2 & Panzer VI Tiger (replica)

Who knew this tank museum was hiding here in the woods of the Old Bethpage Village Restoration? I'm a military history buff and I've visited museums across the country, but this is perfect in my own backyard. We came on a warm fall day and driving into the parking lot you already see a bunch of armored vehicles and missiles parked on the periphery. When we came to the door, the docent said today was free admission day! (I put a $20 bill in the donation box anyway.) Many of the vehicles date from WWII, such as the M4 Sherman, M3 Stuart, M18 Hellcat & armored cars. The name of the museum might be American Armor, but there are some war trophies taken from 1940's Germany, such as the pair of Sturmgeschütz III tank destroyers that were restored to almost new condition. They are also currently working on a replica Panzer VI Tiger, the monstrous tank from movies like Saving Private Ryan and Battle of the Bulge. Going up to the Vietnam War and Cold War eras, they have M47 & M48 Patton tanks, as well as a rare M551 Sheridan reconnaissance tank, of which I built a model when I was a kid. The volunteers here are very dedicated to preserving these historical machines and refurbishing them back to running condition. So once or twice a year, they are taken outside and put through their paces. I'm going to have to find out this year's schedule and be here when they take them out for a spin and reenact a battle!

If your into military history or want to take the family out for a fun experience you have to check this place out. There are tanks, trucks and armored vehicles of all kinds, they also show you videos and explain how and when the vehicles operated. A few times a year they have a reenactment of a battle in France during WWll were the spectators can participate. I am definitely going back when they do that it sounds like a lot of fun

Awesome way to spend an hour or two if you are in the area. Decent sized parking lot and easy to get to off of the highway. You enter into a lobby type area with some pictures and an area where you can watch a video about the history of the museum and how it got started. There are also miniature models of all kinds of different tanks, modern and older, and other countries as well. Beyond the lobby is the actual museum. It's really just one big room/hanger and you can walk around and check out the displays there. Tanks as well as jeeps and other armor related vehicles. Each tank has a plaque with information on the type of vehicle and little bit of the history of it. You can climb or get into any of them, I'm sure for safety reasons, but they are set up so you can see as much inside as possible.

Really good museum, has WW2 and some Cold War tanks, I only give it a 4 since the place is kinda small, but still nice

Instead, they give an "augmented reality" audio tour which is kind of hit or miss. The house was preserved for the historical significance of the Townsend family, one of which was a spy for George Washington. I didn't feel there was a ton of information on the family though. Pointing their phone at the different objects in a room turned on audio about them, but only a couple of rooms in the actual house were interactive. The rest didn't have signs, and one loan employee was around to answer questions at the end. The exhibit in the visitor center was nice though. I just don't think the AR experience was really up to replacing a person, both in amount of information and the uncanny valley, unnerving portraits. There is street parking and a nearby lot that are free on weekends. The gift shop is minimal. It was an okay spot to visit, but I would recommend coming on Sunday or whenever they offer actual tours to get a more thorough understanding of the house and the history of the people who lived here.

That means that when you walk through the buildings, you scan the cell phone device on important paintings and artifacts and they talk to you with further information about who or what they are. The small building that contains the entrance is packed with paintings, dioramas, documents and artifacts. Next you walk to the main house, built in the 1730's, and housing the Townsend family. At the time of the Revolutionary War, Samuel had to make room for a British colonel. In spite of the fact that he sympathised with the patriots, he maintained good relations with his "Guest." At the time of the war, the house had eight rooms. One of his sons was one of the leaders of the Culpepper Spy Ring, Placing the home on the National Registry of Historic Places. Each room was elegantly decorated, with the exception of the space for the enslaved housekeeper. In spite of the fact that we didn't get a formal tour, the staff member tagged along with us and kept up a spirited conversation - even giving us a bonus look at the Victorian wing which doubled the size of the structure. The house is said to be haunted, of course. Very highly recommended. The full set of photos can be found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/terryballard/albums/72177720323110655

Incredible models/ dioramas, great opportunities for all to go into a cockpit, a gunner's seat, etc.etc. Some lucky kid was having a birthday party there today-- loved watching the kids enjoy the museum too. Wonderfully decorated for the holidays. So much to see-- and didn't go outside to see more aircraft because it was rainy, cold and miserable. Got to go in a simulator with the guidance of Frank Rauch. Fun! Thanks Lawrence Starr for getting it running for me. Spent lots of time speaking with the friendly Al Gold, as well as several other engaging volunteers. Good gift shop as well. Definitely returning!!!

I only visited the indoor part and that took me a couple of hours (and I only left because they were closing). You enter through the gift shop and purchase tickets. From there you just wander around this huge space looking at displays and paraphernalia related to flying, military operations, and WWII (and other major wars). There are several cutaway jet engines that will be fascinating to those interested in aeronautical engineering. There are several huge planes that you can climb inside and walk around. A lot of the side exhibits are very well detailed and explanatory. Pro tip: Also check out the Museum of American Armor in Plainview. It's similar but they focus on ground vehicles (tanks, Jeeps, motorcycles, tractors, and other specialty military vehicles).
