I'm concerned with the sudden spike in rent for tenants. Starting an art career is difficult, and I fear the spike in prices will merely gentrify the area and force the artists out. That being said, I am also frustrated by the group that hangs out at the corner of W. Rich and Lucas St during a number of events. I have run into them multiple times, worked with them, and they are always very aggressive. They try to get people to donate for their calendars. When I go to Franklinton Fridays, I want to invest in local art. I don't want to be guilted for not volunteering enough or not donating to their specific cause. Please address this.

The outside of the building is painted with gorgeous mural artwork that I wish I had snapped a photo of! It's worth going even to see the outside. The exhibition itself was incredible and the performances by local circus artists was a great touch. I was extremely impressed by the amount of carnival-style decor that the staff was able to fit into the one room gallery, which also featured a corner bar serving some of your favorite fair food snacks to match the theme. Though the space is super small, the staff and curator clearly go above and beyond to make it a memorable experience to visit. I look forward to coming back in the future for another exhibition and to see what the space looks like in a different theme.

My friend had come months ago here for a rave. I can't imagine how packed it would be for something like that. Anyway, I did like it as a gallery. It's kind of a cool event space that they use for all kinds of things.

I came a little past 1 on a Saturday for an exhibition and it was only us and a volunteer and an intern. They said that they typically don't get many people here unless they have a huge event in which the artist brings their friends to the reception. Still, I wish more people knew about it. They do events here once a month and have an annual festival in early September! Be sure to follow their Instagram and Facebook for more updates! It's volunteer-run, so if you're interested in helping them out they welcome it! They had a few appetizers out, coffee, and juice. The juice was very refreshing! There are a few murals around it and on the building itself. There's a parking lot to the right of it that I think is theirs or you can do street parking on Starr Ave. I'm coming back again next month!

Studios on High is an artist collective. Artists come in and out of ownership of the gallery, but…read morethe average number of associated artists usually hovers around 15. I find that Studios On High has a female slant. Many of the artists are women, many of the themes in the work deal with femininity, and much of the work is aimed (in my opinion) at female buyers. A lot of the art features animals and nature as well. I most appreciate Studios On High for its history as a Columbus gallery; it's been around since the mid-1980s. Many of the artists who leave end up opening their own galleries, case in point, Jeff Hersey of Terra Gallery. If you visit, you'll catch a handful of the artists in the studio; sometimes they're in the process of creating something, or perhaps they're just knitting. The artists are very inviting and don't mind if you hang around to watch them work. My favorite pieces at Studios On High are always the blown glass vessels by husband and wife duo Scott Conover and Lisa Horkin. The tiny vessels are so colorful, and they all have great shapes. I saw Scott and Lisa last summer making the vessels on High St at a Gallery Hop. They also make bowels and vases. The colored pencil drawings by Rhonda Bartoe Tuckers are also phenomenal. They are so smooth that they look like they were painted. Since Studios On High is a collective, there's all kinds of art to be seen (in all kinds of genres): prints, paintings, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, drawings, knits, glass, ceramics, etc. The artwork changes often.

The roominess of the accessible space is afforded by lofted ceilings in both of the large gathering areas. The front area offers a few tabletop and lounge seating arrangements flanked by gallery art and a generous open air kitchen with large Island. The back room has a high-top bar to the side and a generous floor space and stage for live music and readings. Columbus is lucky to have a space like this accessible to our community and vibrant arts scene.

We accidentally passed it the first…read moretime we walked by because we were so distracted by looking at the art on display in the tents and the performance art taking place. Happily, we noticed the space with its large door open on our next pass and we popped into view an interesting comics exhibit. They had a nice art activity set up on a stage in the corner, which a number of kids were enjoying. The space is nice - very high ceilings make it feel pretty roomy. The staff at the desk were very welcoming and helpful.

Words can not explain what this place does for the underserved mentally ill. In addition to…read moreadvocacy this place has given the mentally ill a venue to show and sell works of art. 100% of sales go to the artist and the gallery takes no commission. To date the gallery has sold over $60,000 worth of art. They recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary and I donate work to be auctioned to help raise money for the galleries operation expenses. They have a framing budget and a gallery manager to make sure work is displayed professional. There are affluent collectors that believe in the gallery mission and purchase artwork regularly. I feel like as I'm writing this I can't articulate just how necessary this place is for the targeted population and for the community at large. Heads up: New location and new name!…read more Previously known throughout Columbus as Glass Axis, now the Columbus Glass Art Center, is a non-profit org offering glass blowing and glass art classes to the general public, no membership needed! I went to their Grand Opening of their new building and the space, and it's fantastic! Ample space for several different glass art technique classes. The teachers I met are absolutely wonderful, too! Willing to help/guide if necessary, creative minds, and just plain genuine and personable. I got the chance to make a glass mosaic (think glass art to hand in a window) and a simple smoking pipe (torch melting glass and all!), and it was phenomenal! I'm seriously looking into taking a few classes; and, besides, I know my money is going to an excellent org that's promoting art, culture, and creative partnerships throughout central Ohio!
