Gasoline prices are always the lowest. ...though there is often a line. Prices and service for tires is also excellent at Sam's. Meat, frozen foods, canned foods, and even produce prices are great. You just need to plan because you'll be buying in larger containers or in bulk. Even just purchasing for one small family the savings can add up. Then there's the household and garden items, even furniture... Towels, linens, dishes, small kitchen appliances, rugs, pharmacy, glasses and vision items, the list is long. Do I find everything I need here? No. I still need to go to HEB or Walmart to finish off my list. I've been told their major competitor has some advantages, so I went with my son. I didn't see a convincing reason to switch over. Sam's also has another location on 10th Street which is closer to where I live - where I usually go. I went to this Sam's because they carry a particular product I needed to take to my sister in North Texas. I have consistently had a positive experience here. My only suggestion for improvement is more lanes open for faster checkout.

This is the SAMs Scan and Go app, available in your iPhone/Android devices. The only reason why I have a SAMs card is because I am a teacher. I sometimes need to buy things in bulk as incentives for my students. However, the items I buy are rarely more than 10 items combined, and I know specifically what I want and where to find it. It used to take me longer to wait in line at a register to pay and to put the items I needed in the cart. Along comes the Scan and Go app. With it, after you register your SAMs card and your debit card, you can scan the items that you want as you put them in the cart with your phone. The app will tally up your items total on the fly. When you are ready to leave SAMs, just click "Checkout," and you pay within the app. No need to make a line at the registers anymore. I just pay at whatever point of the store I happen to be, walk straight to the exit, then show my digital receipt to have it scanned (as is customary for these type of stores) and I'm on my way to the vehicle. I have done this 3 times now, and I turned what would normally be a 25 minute trip into a 7 minute trip. If more stores do something like this, shopping anywhere would be a more pleasant experience everywhere. I commend Sam's for being a trailblazer in the Scan and Pay department. Tip my hat to you.

The Cool Spot was so cool that it was a drive in convenience store where you could buy a 32oz corona, dressed with salt and lime, with the top partially off as they weren't allowed to "open" it for you. Note: This was before the days of open containers so your passenger would hang out, drinking corona as you foamed at the mouth watching the frosty brew disappear at lightning speed. Little did I know that 10 years later, in McAllen, TX, I'd find the same amazingness. Now, I didnt test the corona/dressed thing, but I was able to get the BEST Michelada. You drive in, ask for a Clamato Preparada and they take clamato and sprinkle fairy dust in it (prob lime, salt, chile.) Then you get a beer to go with it that's not open and drive off. I ordered two of these lovely 32 oz cups of deliciousness, a tecate and my total cost was $10. It was like a fantasy... if your fantasies involve well made micheladas (and mine do.)

On the wall, they have all the plates you can choose from...with no price. Why? Are we doing a guessing game? Can you imagine going to a place like McDonalds...and they have no prices next to their burgers? Why? So you take a guess on the price on what you want to order....the food "looks" good. But they give it to you on these old school cafeteria plates. Come on guys...do some investments on new cutlery and plates. If you are dining in, after them giving you your plate, you seat yourself and then a waitress comes by and asks you what you want to drink. It feels like chaos in there. On top of everything...they have a counter to the back where you can order barbacoa, chicharrones, or carnitas by the pound...but it's a mess because those customers blend in with everyone else. Is the place humming? Definitely. I had the carne guisada plate... honestly I think eating it out of that 1980s plate took away half the flavor. The carne guisada was decent. I would actually recommend the El Tigre carne guisada plate for only $7.50 over this $12 plate. Is there something of quality in that place... possibly. But I'm not going to play Where's Waldo in trying to find it.
