Since it was my friend's birthday, the desk agent (I believe her name is Terrye?) gave us a complimentary breakfast buffet card for their restaurant (called Oro) which was unexpected and so nice! We decided to use the card on the day we checked out, but they did not serve the buffet that day. They allowed us to order from the menu instead, and that was very good!

We left big Bend State Park bright and early, with plans to arrive in San Antonio with enough time to check into our hotel, shower after four days of desert camping without electrical or water hook ups... Which means without showers... And enjoy a trip to the Alamo and dinner as a family. Before telling our tale in detail, and so as to avoid any confusion, this Residence Inn was awesome, and went out of their way to save our stay in San Antonio. After driving like mad for several hours, we arrived in San Antonio to a different neighboring hotel that we had booked through AAA several months in advance. We arrived well past check in time, with just enough time to unload the truck, jump in the shower quickly, and catch an Uber to our reserved time at the Alamo. Unfortunately, The lady behind the counter told us she had no rooms for us that we're ready, and it would be at least two hours before we could check in. When I told her that was not going to work with our dinner reservations, she did the hotel language translation of "I'm sorry about that" which means " that's your problem jerk wad, not mine." Various misadventures with this woman completely lying to me, having her manager yell at me, and going rounds with corporate are all fodder for A different review. Not wanting to fool around, I went back out to my truck, and started calling the other hotel properties Adjacent to this one that had let us down so badly. When I called the Residence Inn, The lady who answered told me she had a room ready to go. I told her I'd take it, and that I would see her in five minutes. While my wife and kids busy themselves gathering things inside the camper trailer, I walked up the hill, entered the lobby, and found the staff celebrating an employee's birthday party with a small cake and a lot of laughs. They asked me to join in, and it was such a breath of fresh air from the employee I had encountered down the hill, I couldn't help but giggle and sing along. Afterwards, they quickly checked me in, told me where I could park my truck and trailer right inside the lot, and I hurried back down the hill to collect my family and vehicles. The room was a mini suite, who the living room, kitchen area with a full-size refrigerator, microwave, sink and stove, and two queen size beds to complement the full size bathroom. After four days of roughing it on the Rio Grande, my kids were in heaven. After dinner, we returned to the hotel in time for the kids to enjoy the pool, right next-door to the laundry facilities that we desperately needed to clean our clothes for annex stent of camping in Louisiana. There were a few rough edges on things, and this was not a resort hotel destination. The staff told me to park my trailer where "we can keep an eye on it" and informed me that they had nighttime security in the lot. But the room was clean, the air conditioner rocked, the TV didn't have any problems, The truck and trailer were fine the next morning, and the staff was very friendly. On the morning we left, we enjoyed a complementary breakfast that was definitely a few steps above powdered eggs and reheated pastries. A few decades ago, one could travel around this country in most places without worrying about reservations, I just blow into town and find a place with vacancy. The Internet changed all this in many ways, so we changed with it. But when that other hotel did not honor their own guarantee to have a room ready for us that we had booked months in advance, then made no effort to fix it like I had done something wrong, it was a real downer. I was so grateful to the staff at this Residence Inn for keeping us on track on what would become the best vacation our family has ever enjoyed together.

Residence Inn is supposed to be a moderately upscale extended stay brand under the Marriott…read moreumbrella. This location is not run like a Marriott at all. It is run like a cheap interstate-side Motel 6 with a nicer sign out front. We checked in on a Saturday and by Wednesday we still had not received any housekeeping service in either of our two rooms. No cleaning. No trash removal. No fresh towels. Our trash was overflowing to the point that we had to pile it on the floor under the kitchenette sink just to get it out of the way. We had to go to the front desk ourselves to ask for replacement towels and additional toilet paper. That is not extended stay service. That is neglect. Both rooms were dirty. The top of the refrigerator was covered in a thick layer of dust that clearly had not been touched in a very long time. Several of the towels provided had disgusting stains on them. Not small wear and tear stains but the kind that make you question whether they should have been put back into circulation at all. The exterior of the property is just as bad. The parking lot was muddy and full of gross puddles. Every grassy area around the hotel was covered in dog feces. It is everywhere. Can someone not be bothered to clean it up or enforce basic pet rules? It was very cold during our stay and one of the two rooms did not have working heat. To be fair, maintenance did come quickly and fixed the issue, which is the only positive thing I can say about the operation of this place. Because of the cold, the hotel opened its rooms to some unhoused people. We genuinely support people having a warm place to stay. That said, some of the individuals staying there were very rough and intimidating. Breakfast became uncomfortable and awkward, which is not something you expect at a Residence Inn where families and business travelers are supposed to feel at ease. Security seems practically nonexistent. Almost every night someone slid restaurant flyers under our door. On New Years Eve someone did this at 10:30 at night. That should not be happening inside a Marriott property. We expected to pay for parking and the price itself is reasonable compared to other Marriott locations. However, being required to keep an aggressive permission slip prominently displayed on the dashboard makes the whole experience feel like a budget motel worried about towing rather than a professional hotel. Finally, this may sound picky but loyalty matters at Marriott. My wife travels frequently for business and has Titanium Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy and will likely be Ambassador after this stay. There was zero acknowledgement of her loyalty. No welcome, no thank you, no small gift, no free drink, nothing at all. Overall this property is deeply disappointing. Residence Inns are supposed to be clean, comfortable, and professionally run. This one feels neglected, poorly managed, and completely disconnected from Marriott brand standards. We will not be returning and would strongly caution other Marriott loyalists to stay elsewhere.

They also give you a placard to put in your vehicle so you don't get towed while parked on the property, which was appreciated. Unfortunately, things went downhill once we got to the room. The hallways leading to the rooms had no air conditioning, so you're walking through San Antonio summer humidity just to get to your room. The room itself was nothing impressive just a basic place to sleep. There was a small kitchenette, although "kitchenette" is being generous. The refrigerator barely cooled anything, so anything inside was more lukewarm than cold. If you're planning to use the pull-out sofa, beware. The mattress was extremely thin, and you could feel practically every spring. The top portion of the couch wasn't any better because the seat cushions were incredibly stiff and felt like sleeping directly on the floor. Another major issue was the lack of housekeeping/service during our stay. We were told they were too busy due to the timing and couldn't service our room or provide additional pillows and blankets for the sleeper sofa. That's especially frustrating when you're already dealing with an uncomfortable sleeping arrangement. The air conditioning in the room also didn't work particularly well. One part of the room was relatively cool while the other remained warm, making it difficult to get comfortable. The bathroom was divided into two separate areas, with the shower and sink in one area and the toilet and another sink in the other. That setup actually wasn't bad, especially for families with young kids it allows someone to use the toilet while another person is showering. There is a workout area downstairs if that's important to you. The pool area, however, was extremely outdated and didn't feel very clean. The pool was heavily chlorinated, and there never seemed to be any pool towels available, so be prepared to air dry. The one bright spot was breakfast. It wasn't bad for a complimentary breakfast and included eggs, sausage, cereal, yogurt, waffles, and several coffee options. I understand that this location is convenient if you're in town for Air Force BMT graduation, and that convenience may be the biggest selling point. However, based on our experience, I would strongly recommend looking at other hotels if you can. The convenience wasn't enough to make up for the uncomfortable beds, poor air conditioning, lack of housekeeping, outdated pool area, and overall condition of the property.

In general, you can hear a lot through the walls and windows, so please be considerate to your neighbors side to side, and even above and below especially in the morning and at night (I had someone playing music at 5am; and blasting the tv late at night is always a big one too). The plaza across the street also plays Spanish music from about 9-10pm every day, which you can hear very well if you have a street side room. The church bell also rings every hour on the hour. The room: It was very clean. Bed is maybe a medium firmness, pillows are very squishy and flatten easily, you may easily need to pile them up. The pillows are also very long and truly made for a king sized bed. The sheets were fine, a little bit rough, but the sheets and comforter hold a lot of warmth when the room is cold. I love the mini kitchenette, it has a decent sized mini fridge, microwave, sink, coffee station, as well as plates, cups, utensils, paper towels, and a tiny dish soap bottle. There's a very nicely sized flat screen TV with streaming and live tv options, and positioned in a great spot in relation to the bed (in my room at least). The thermostat I had to turn down a little because it was set a little warmer, but it did not get as low as I set it. I think the lowest I've seen was about 69? The closet was a smallishwardrobe, one side had 3 drawers with the safe on top and a hanging bar, and the other side was meant for all hanging items. They both had additional storage cubbies above too. There was definitely not enough drawer space or hangers if you're unpacking and staying longer than a few days. It did also have an iron and ironing board as well. The desk area was nice and simple. A phone, light, and notepad and plenty of space to work. The bathroom: Very clean as well. The vanity had a good amount of storage cubbies for towels, and a drawer with a blow dryer. On the top was your typical bar of soap, lotion, and tissues. The shower was pretty cool I think, sliding glass door with the shower head on the stationary door side and the knob on the other. It also included a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner and body wash fixed to the wall. One thing I noticed is there is no towel bar or hook to hang a towel while you're showering. The only available space is in the shower door handle (which is vertically positioned on the door). I would definitely recommend putting one in, or at least a hook, on the wall right next to the shower. The only other hanging space is 2 single hooks, fixed to the back of the bathroom door. Breakfast: They had an amazing variety of breakfast items to choose from. *Main entree: Every day they make fresh plain scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, vegetable frittata, and there's also a daily special (see photo)(pancakes and French toast repeat, I wish they would do someone different so nothing repeated... maybe cheesy eggs or an omelette or regular sausage and definitely bacon!). They also have bread carts out in the dining area that have: cereal, bagels, English muffins, bread, and banana bread. *Sides: yogurt with multiple topping options like granola, banana chips, chocolate chips, raisins, nuts, etc. overnight oats with additional toppings: sprinkles, chopped snickers, Oreo crumbles, etc. oatmeal packets, and fresh fruit (strawberry, blueberry, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, oranges, bananas) *Condiments: pancake syrup, ketchup, hot sauce, salt. Nutella cream, Hershey syrup, strawberry syrup, agave syrup, honey. Breakfast carts: butter, cream cheese Toaster stations: peanut butter, almond butter, peach preserves, strawberry preserves, Nutella *Drinks: Coffee, water, hot water/tea, apple juice, orange juice, cranberry juice The options are great, but after about 5 days they get very old. I know it's a long shot, maybe a pain in the butt, but I'd love the option for a breakfast sandwich, even if it's just for an hour.

Let's start with the good. Arrival was smooth, valet was on point, and every staff member I encountered--from housekeeping to the gentleman assisting with luggage--was pleasant and professional. Customer service? Solid across the board. The River's Edge Lounge was definitely a highlight. Happy hour did what it needed to do. Queso and chips were good, margaritas were even better, and our server, Blake Leigh (if I got that right), was absolutely amazing. Attentive, kind, and just good energy. Now... the not-so-great. Hot water was a problem. Tuesday morning--none. An engineer came up and got it working temporarily. Wednesday morning--none again. By then, multiple guests were experiencing the same issue, so clearly it wasn't just my room. I get it--there were hundreds of women in the hotel--but lack of preparation shouldn't fall on the guest. Wednesday and Thursday mornings? Still no hot water. I didn't even bother calling again. Then came the conference food situation... and whew. Lunch started with a salad, and the woman next to me found a bug crawling out of her lettuce. That was it for me--I immediately lost my appetite and left. No coming back from that. Breakfast earlier that week was a honey biscuit with chicken... but it wasn't giving honey, and the chicken was overcooked and dry. To their credit, when I shared my experience with the River's Edge staff, they comped my queso. That was appreciated. One more thing--there was an occasional odor in the hotel. Not constant, but noticeable when it hit. Let's just say... it leaned toward sewer vibes and leave it there. Fiume Pizzeria and Wine Bar I also ordered pizza from Fiume during my stay, and unfortunately... it missed the mark. I tried the Sweet Texas Heat (white sauce, applewood smoked bacon, Calabrian pepper, fresh basil, hot honey), and for $35, I expected better. It was overcooked--thin crust turned dry and brittle--and once that happens, it's hard to recover. Flavor was okay, but the texture ruined it. The side salad? Very good. But I wasn't paying $35 for a salad. Final Thoughts The Hilton Palacio del Rio has a prime location right on the River Walk, it's clean, and the staff is genuinely pleasant--which goes a long way. But between the inconsistent hot water, food issues, and a few questionable moments... I'm torn. Would I stay again? Maybe--for convenience. Would I eat there again? No.
