It has often been said that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, I truly believe this to be true. The tragic story written on this plaque talked about a lynching of a black Union Army veteran who ran away with a white girl only to be found by 25 masked horseman who promptly lynched him. I find myself stopping when I see a historic plaque. I learned a bit of local history and walk away a more wiser person.

The Memphis National Cemetery was established in 1867. Originally named Mississippi River National…read moreCemetery during the time the Union Army forces took control of Memphis. There are around 8,866 graves of Civil War unknowns, the 2nd largest number of unknowns in any of the national cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the Department of Veterans Affaires. This is attributed to the Memphis National Cemetery not being established until 1867, two years after the close of the Civil War. During the initial burial, wooden burial markers placed at the graves had been removed, or exposed to the elements. There was no mandatory use during the Civil War of any form of personal ID. In 1867, about 250 bodies of Union soldiers, from the Battle of Fort Pillow, were moved from a battlefield cemetery south of Fort Pillow to Memphis National Cemetery to be re-interred in a designated field. Many of the dead from the Sultana maritime disaster are also buried here.

Isaac Hayes was a world-famous musician, song writer, activist and musician who called Memphis…read morehome. He passed away in 2008 and was buried in 2008 in Memphis Memorial Park. It is relatively easy to find, as it is located just across from the Crystal Shrine Grotto. This is one of the more extravagant graves that you will find in the cemetery. The grave is marked by a huge bronze foot stone that has photos of Hayes in different stages of his life and his movies engraved in it. It also has the God's Garden poem inscribed and reads: God looked around his garden And he found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And found your star He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God's garden is beautiful now He always takes the best. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. There are many sights to check out in the cemetery including the Crystal Shrine Grotto.

The interior is furnished with some original and some replica, but all very interesting. They give a quick talk, then you tour on your own. Definitely worth a stop.

I love visiting these unique art installations throughout the US, which are sometimes in the most unusual locations. Painstakingly built over 45 years, and some say they are still adding to it...this is a must visit on your next trip. It takes about 20-30 mins to see it all. If you stop to take photos everywhere then add more time.

Got an email from the museum stating they offer free general admission on every third Thursday of…read moreeach month. Took advantage of that and visited with my mom, son and niece. I hadn't been since I was a kid, so I was excited to visit again. For the most part, a lot was the same as I remember and I was excited to show the kids. There were a few new things too, which was cool. We didn't get a chance to do the planetarium ($5 on the free third Thursdays) nor the giant screen theater (also $5). Next time, I for sure want to take my son inside the planetarium because it was my most favorite thing as a kid. Hopefully, he'll love it too. As an adult, the museum definitely seems a bit random and there's not a whole lot that's interesting (unless you're a huge science/history fan). Overall, the kids enjoyed themselves and that's all that matters.
